I'm sure others have noticed this, but I couldn't find a similar thread.

when browsing tinder or okc, I always notice a few girls who look decent in their main pic, but one of their other pics will show them shoving a giant hamburger into their face, or giving themselves a fake mustache, or making a funny face, or looking not-so-great in gym clothes.

when I post pics of myself I try to choose good ones. I see a lot of girls doing this also, choosing photos that emphasize cleavage, or show a lot of leg, or have them in a nice dress. trying to look their best, trying to entice a quality man to talk to them.

what could possibly be the motivation for a girl to upload a photo of herself shoving a hot dog into her face? it looks horribly unattractive. do they not know this? do they know this and not care?

Honestly, I think some girls just show those photos because that's really how they are and they want to find a guy that isn't repulsed by that side of their personality. It's usually in those unattractive photos that you figure out what the girl is really like.

Part of it can arguably be explained through avoidance personality disorder.

If a girl makes herself look ugly (whether by pulling a face, piercings, strange haircuts etc) she avoids confronting her desirability, taking away the sting of any rejection. She can plausibly rationalise that she has removed herself out of selection, protecting her ego and glossing over negative traits which might be beyond her control or level of self-discipline.

It's also a reflection of the options any semi-attractive girl has. If she pulls a stupid face, what difference does it really make? She'll still have a long line of guys who'll climb over each other to take her out.

The only reason I've been able to come up with is "because they're fucking idiots".

Equally there's several hot ones, with their body blatantly on show in every picture, who seem surprised that they get contacted for sex more than relationship.

They had no daddy or at least no one with with any authority around them to explain that men like classy girls with submissive dignity. But their subconsciously jealous frenemies tough them that the more you publicly degrade yourself and the more you appear to be OK with your public self-degradation the cooler and more herd accepted you are.

Yeah I think at least some girls legitimately think it's cool. Like the guys who think girls only care about looks, because they only care about looks, some women are so clueless about what men want, because they never had to empathize with the male point of view. They want a man with a strong personality, being a bit edgy, funny etc and they think that the same must be true for men.

That's one explanation, but I agree it is a big turnoff to see pictures of girls doing ugly/stupid/masculine stuff.

For some of them, it would be an entirely-unconscious process.

It's also possible they don't want to look too attractive, because then it's easier to rationalise away rejection or indifference from men on the site. "Well, it's not like I was trying to look my best. I would be flooded with offers if I really tried."

They do it because they are:

Arrogant
Entitled in that they think you should love them no matter how fat or ugly they are
Delusional that they really are attractive
Contemptuous of the judgments of others, in that they don't care what you think

I can remember an okc profile I saw a few years back where the girl mentioned that she farts a lot. at first I thought I had misread it, then maybe that it was a typo, but no, after multiple readings I confirmed that the girl really felt the need to mention that she farts a lot in her dating profile.

I think there are layers to attention seeking. some girls are just on the site for cheap attention, but others have a weird experimental side to them that wants to make a purposefully gross profile just to see how many guys message them anyway.

yeah, a good looking, fit girl in gym clothes is great. or even an average looking girl with a nice body in gym clothes is great. but some girls post photos of themselves in gym clothes (maybe at the gym, maybe climbing or hiking) and they just look frumpy. if she is plain looking and has no curves and/or shape to her body it is a horrible choice - she would be much better off in a nice dress or something more flattering.

in their defense, I think some girls just don't know what is flattering, which is partially not their fault since they have friends that could help them but probably just lie to them.

I don't think its as premeditated as we would would guess. I think it comes down to a few things, a lot of women are just clueless when it comes to technology, and many women have bad taste.

Cropping, uploading good pictures and putting them in order is a surprisingly laborious task for a lot of women. How many profiles do you like on where one picture is posted 5 times?

Lot's of women just don't care. Posing well, dressing well, photographing well is not even considered. Is it some ploy to get men to "just like me for who I am?" I don't think so, I think some women just don't care and others are socially unaware of what turns men off. They're bigger dorks than we give them credit for.

The thing I find occasionally that surprises the hell out of me is when a girl's main pic isn't that flattering, while her other photos are pretty damn hot.

These might be confined to Asian dating sites, but my favourites include:

1. Shot of them at a famous landmark -- taken from 200m away so you can't see a damn fucking thing about them.
2. Photo of them with seven other people, and based upon their other photos, they're neither the ugliest trying to trick you, nor the hottest trying to establish dominance. WTF? They have a big family? They have a lot of friends? Do I give a shit?
3. Photo of inanimate object without them in the photo. The most common is a meal, but others include paintings, landscapes, designer brands. Yes, you have a Gucci handbag. I'm not into handbags. It would be funny to troll them by sending them a message and writing, "Not interested in going on a date with you, but could you tell me where you took those photos? I feel like going for a hike and will also need to eat afterwards."
4. Photo of them with someone else's kid. So they're trying to telegraph that they love/want kids, but what they actually telegraph is "I have some other man's kid" and you run a mile from them.
5. Photo of their dog. "You're fugly, but you have a cute dog there. Mind if I fuck that instead?"

These chicks then wonder why they get to 33 and have never had a boyfriend.

Enough women add photos of their pets to make me think that it must be something they want to see in a man. If you have pets, make sure there's a picture of them on your profile.
