I've done it before on a previous phone, and it was a disaster. I regretted doing it. What happens when you jailbreak your phone is that it becomes more vulnerable to outside attacks, and any app that is downloaded outside of App Store may not have been QC'ed as rigorously as the official apps have been. It also can't update unless you wait for a jailbroken version of the new iOS (which may take months). Plus the iCloud and push functionality becomes much more erratic or less reliable.

I paid a pretty penny for my new iphone pretty recently, and I don't want to jailbreak it for those reasons, unless I absolutely have to, as a last resort. If it were an older phone that I know I wouldn't bother bringing back to the Apple store if something goes wrong, then yeah I'll jailbreak the thing.

Good points CS, I can't help with the stability problems. That surprises me that unlocking would do such a thing though i've only unlocked Android phones.

You can avoid the outside vectors of attack by simply not downloading non app store apps however.

Hold on, just to clarify... unlocking is different from jailbreaking. Unlocking your phone only allows your phone to use different sim cards with different carriers. Jailbreaking, on the other hand, allows you to download apps not from the App store (while losing certain protections)... which is what I understand you meant, but I just wanted to point out that these are two specific terms with different meanings.

Yeah that's what i meant too. Jail breaking (rooting) as opposed to sim unlocking.

RE: Tethering and Portable Hotspot options
Does anyone currently use a Verizon hotspot for home internet (MIFI device)?

I don't have cable tv, and it's dumb for me to pay $50 a month for internet when I have a decent data plan already that I could add to and use for internet at home.

Just curious before I buy this Verizon MiFi 6620L device and try it out.

I have the old grandfathered AT&T 2010 unlimited iPad data plan which sits in a Velocity hotspot that I use for internet at home. Goes with me in the RV or on vacation. $30 a month but they just re-introduced the plan so you can get it if you find an iPad IMEI to activate it with.

The alternate option is to get a "Mobley" OBDII car hotspot device and move the SIM to a hotspot, or buy a OBDII DC power adapter for the house. Mobleys are sold out right now but there are ways to get one on eBay.

On the Sprint network there's this option as well:

Verizon has killed off all their unlimited data options lately it seems.
