It's all the same stuff I listen too.

The top 40 hip hop laced with profanity that I can't stand to listen to, the typical club music that's being played in clubs, which is ok.

The music I like the best is Country Western music, Southern Rock, Hard Rock, and even some of the new rock for example I think the best new band out right now is Twenty One Pilots.

But, it's all the same stuff. I'm wanting to expand my horizons, get into some different genres entirely possibly.

Maybe even some classical music who knows.

Any recommendations?

Music is something very personal... What person A digs, person B will hate etc...

Spotify has very good recommendations... Take a song you like and start a radio from that song, go from there.

If you stumble on an artist you really like go to discogs.com check on which label he/she/they released and look further in the discography of that label.

Or just go to bandcamp.com and use their discover function.

Classical music. The Planets by Holst is accessible. It's kind of like rock concept album. But classical obviously.

Greig's piano concerto in A minor is a personal favourite.

The amount of pure quality classical music out there is mind boggling if you can get in to it.

For current music:
Spotify "song radio" (as suggested by Meliorare93) is excellent. You can also do the same by picking a song on YouTube and leaving autoplay on or going into the suggested videos rabbit hole.

Try to go to live performances and underground venues whenever possible and watch all types of bands/live acts - that's how I fell in love with techno and deep house.

For older music (like the classic rock stuff you mentioned):
Read up on the history of bands you like or on the biographies of their members. Watch documentaries about certain music styles (The Wrecking Crew), records (The Dark Side of the Moon), interesting characters (Searching for Sugar Man) or events (Woodstock, Festival Express). Listen to podcasts about music history or interviews with musicians. Follow the references of your favorite artists and you'll find interesting stuff.

For classical music:
If you have access to a venue where classical music is played (most big cities have a philarmonic), don't even worry about what is being played - just buy a ticket and go. Listening to classical music performed live can be extremely riveting or extremely boring - you'll find out if you like it or not quite fast. Either way it's a good experience to have, if you have never done it before. Once you know if you want to go deeper into that, read up on each piece, how the parts were arranged, etc - the more you know about it, the more you might enjoy it.

Extra:
If you have some time on your hands and want to venture into a new and rewarding challenge, study music theory and learn how to play an instrument - whichever one you think is interesting. This will give you a whole new level of appreciation for what great music is, and how incredible great musicians are.

I second the youtube rabbithole. The majority of the new music that I've discovered has been from clicking suggested videos/autoplays.

Good suggestion! Going to a classical music concert is quite the experience! Don't go there to game cause you'll be surrounded by older people

BUT... There's one "problem"... Most Classical music venues (even Classical music radios) program very safely and don't dare to take on lesser known pieces... It's almost always the same stuff... Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms etc

I'm really into avant-garde/modern orchestral music (Xenakis, George Crumb, John Cage etc)... I can count the times they've programmed such works in the local venue the last ten years on one hand. Such a shame.

Anyway... Music is quite the rabbit hole so don't get lost

With the rise of internet radio, there's no excuse for not checking out any genre out there.
From traditional Spanish flamenco to Croatian folk tunes, it's all out there to sample.

[Of note: Don't get me wrong, but I detest hipster dilettantism -- I'm honestly curious about everything that's out there -- I just don't have the ego need to wear it on my sleeve.]

VAST are an incredible band that nobody seems to know anything about.

Matisyahu, Deathgrips, and Talib Kweli aren't big hip hop names (in the uk) but are incredible.

Die Antawoord if you want some party music.

Shakey Graves and Margo Price if you like country.

First Aid Kit if you like folk.

Pretty much all the music I listen to is classic material, the older the better.
Go back to the past.... look up the bands that influenced some of your favorites. Listen to Old country, blues and 50s rock that started it all and work your way present.

Old country like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Carl Perkins etc are the foundation for today's country stars.

Old 50s, 60s & 70s blues & rock-n-rollers Like Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Who, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beach Boys, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Robert Johnson, Eddie Cochran, Grateful Dead, Pink FLoyd...just keep digging

I love a lot of 80s, 90s stuff too from yacht rock to hair metal and alternative, I still love hard stuff but the older I get the more I get into mellow soft rock and calmer music also.. I listen to anything and everything.... Pantera, Kenny Loggins, Stone Temple Pilots, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Nirvana, Sublime, Bob Marley, Steely Dan, The Police, The Offspring, KISS, Foo Fighters, Foreigner, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Black Sabbath, White Stripes, Prince, Radiohead, Elton John, The Black Keys, Sade, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, Michael McDonald, The Eagles, No Doubt, The Cars, Talking Heads, Soundgarden, Weezer, Rage Against The Machine, Motley Crue, The Clash...I could go on forever

What do we need new music for when all the best music ever made is right at our fingertips today.

As for super mainstream...Megadeth, Ted Nugent

Kind of mainstream: Centaur, Crimson Glory, LA Guns, Warlock, Loudness, Cats in Boots, Slaughter, Saga, Dream Theater, Freedom Call

Anyone else listen to symphonic power metal? Songs like Heroes of the Lost Valley & Eternal Glory by Rhapsody, Quest for Eternal Fame by Dark Moor or Under the Light of the Moon by Holy Knights and so on.

Also, I just picked up a CD called Takeshi Terauchi: Nippon Guitars Instrumental Surf, Eleki & Tsugaru Rock 1966-1974. It's pretty good.

From the country singers you listed, I think you'll like Georgia (the state) country. Here are some that are either semi-mainstream or still very obscure. It has its own distinctive sound, almost like more upbeat slightly more pop-influenced versions of Texas country.

Jon Langston, Travis Denning, Jordan Rager, Cole Taylor, Jobe Fortner, Riley Green, Ryan Fulcher

Some of the Midwestern country singers who haven't made it mainstream yet but just as good, if not better, than the mainstream guys:

Drew Baldridge, Clark Manson, Clayton Anderson

For other genres, I haven't dug past the mainstream yet.

For non-English music, Rocha is our resident expert for kick-ass Russian language music.

I just checked out twenty one pilots and I thought it was pretty terrible. To each their own.

Right now I am into:

Highly Suspect
Royal Blood
Turbowolf
Truckfighters

Highly Suspect and Royal Blood might be slightly mainstream at this point.

Soundcloud’s also good place to check out some new bands/artists, albeit that requires some work to sift through.
