Rainbow raw egg in beer
If any of you have seen season 2 of the wire, there is a scene where the dock workers are at the bar and they crack open a raw egg in their beers. Has anyone else tried this? Any reason why someone would do it?

I've tried it. I don't mind the taste of raw eggs so I thought it didn't taste bad at all.

Does anyone know why this is a thing?

RE: raw egg in beer
I think it's supposed to be a sort of blue-collar breakfast to have at the end of a graveyard shift. Some people say it's a hangover cure.

Also found this, which is interesting:

RE: raw egg in beer
Arthur Saxon (one of the strongest men in history) was apparently a fan.

Quote:For breakfast they ate 24 eggs and 3 pounds of smoked bacon; porridge with cream, honey, marmalade and tea with plenty of sugar. At three o’clock they had dinner: ten pounds of meat was consumed with vegetables (but not much potatoes); sweet fruits, raw or cooked, sweet cakes, salads, sweet puddings, cocoa and whipped cream and very sweet tea. Supper, after the show, they had cold meat, smoked fish, much butter, cheese and beer. Following this they had a chat and at one o’clock went to bed.

The Saxons did have a “health drink” which I presume they concocted themselves. The ingredients were dark lager beer (or Dublin stout) mixed with Holland gin, the yolk of an egg and plenty of sugar. “It is a very good but strong drink” was the Saxon opinion, “but, if you are not used to it you will get dizzy very quickly.” It seems to me that one would have to be a very strong man in the first place, in order to drink it.

It's supposedly an old male potency remedy. At least that what I recall hearing from my Caribbean side of the family. I think it's Guinness with milk and egg. I have no idea how this would work, but it's something people do.

Runners and rowers like it, especially in Guinness.
Plenty of iron in both, carbohydrate in the Guinness and fat/protein in the egg.

Eat a hardboiled egg and if you want, wash it down with beer.

RE: raw egg in beer
I used to go to this hole in the wall bar near my house and hangout alot during te week. We were cool withteh bartenders so used to get hooked up with drinks and sometimes they'd just mix up crazy stuff for us to try and give to us for free.

They used to do some drink with like beer, tomatoe juice a raw egg and some hhotsauce or something like that. It was years ago so dont remember what they called it, maybe something sunrise or sling or something like that obviously not a tequila sunrise or singapore sling as those are diff drinks but something close to those types of names.

I don't think anybody really enjoyed it, it wasn't very good but we used to buy each other these drinks sometimes when your just getting wasted like what can we drink next.

RE: raw egg in beer
I never really thought about this kind of a egg/beer combination.

Leave it to the forum to come up with interesting and creative lifestyle approaches.

In recent years, I have NOT been drinking too much beer b/c I have been decreasing my carbs; however, recently I have been adding some carbs back into my diet, yet frequently I fear carb creep.

Now, to mix in a raw egg or two in with any beer seems an interesting proposition.. that would likely provide some nutrition and also potentially ameliorate some of the carb load of the beer. I think that I am going to try it. I don't think that it would be any real nutrition drink, except for the egg part, but I am trying to be a little more open in my thinking about potential beneficial effects that can come through various carbs... and beer is fermented and surely there have been various kinds of alcohol consumption for quite some time in human history... there could possibly be some nutrients therein or at least in the total concoction.

I do prefer darker beers, but I would imagine that a raw egg or two could go with either light or dark beers.. I will just have to see what beer is available at the time that egg is also available. I don't have eggs or beer in my apartment at the moment, as I type.. Smile

You can use just the white of the egg in smoothies, milkshakes, etc. or whatever.

The white has the protein, and the yolk has the fat, and the B vitamins which will constipate you if you have too much.

I'm of the school of thought that the yolk is the best part of the egg, and probably it is best to eat both the egg white and the yolk together. there is a lot of misinformation about supposed health benefits of egg whites and false demonizing of fats.

Yes there is.

I based my comments on something I read a while ago, that said that sports people/athletes etc would refrain from too many egg yolks for the reasons I mentioned. I'm not at that level though.

I eat at least 2 eggs every day as part of a balanced diet, which seems to work fine for me. I will probably increase that when I get my training regime sorted out properly.

I don't mean to be a fud dud; however, when it comes to nutrition there is a lot of conflicting information out there, and each of us has to come to his own conclusions about what information he trusts and what he is going to do on a personal level.

Regarding eggs specifically, they have been demonized for years and years with various marketing tactics, and sometimes it takes generations to correct what is being said b/c there is some big money invested into selling egg beaters, for example, or drug companies selling statin drugs by promulgating hypotheses regarding cholesterol being bad and saturated fat being bad, while they are making artificial oils out of partially hydrogenated oils and saying that those items are supposedly good. People will still tend to believe the marketing information, even when it has been rebutted.

So people get confused by various marketing, and even very smart people get confused. I recently mentioned in another thread that I had noticed that on the carton of eggs of a guy friend of mine was eating, it said that the chickens that produced the eggs were vegetarians, as if to be marketing that as a good thing. Accordingly, he paid $7 per dozen rather than buying 5 dozen for $7.

I discussed this marketing with my friend to help him to understand that naturally chickens are NOT vegetarians, and when you purposefully feed them as vegetarians, you are screwing up their eggs to reduce the omega 3 to 6 ratios in the fat and potentially adding more GMOs into the diets of the chickens through the grains. If he was going to pay that much extra for the eggs, then he should at least ensure that they are free range and bug eating chickens, otherwise he was paying extra and NOT getting much benefits and potentially getting some negatives from "vegetarian" egg-producing chickens. In other words, he had good intentions, but did NOT realize some of the lack of benefits that he was receiving from those more expensive eggs.

Anyhow, for me, raw eggs and beer seems like a good thing to try out, and to add the eggs to the beer whole, and I probably will NOT care too much from where the eggs come, but if they come from a free range farm, that would be better, but I may NOT be willing to pay $7 a dozen for them, if I can get 5 dozen of NON-marketed whole eggs for the same price.
