The truth is that the word "preto" is impolite and should be avoided when one is interacting with strangers. For example, the newspapers or TV newscasts in PT never use the word "preto". Instead, they use the word "negro" or, more pedantically, "de raça negra".

oh yeah you are right, you didn't say that on your post, I didnt know you meant when interacting with strangers (but still, sometimes it will happen..fuck it,even the police when stop to search you, they will call you preto).

as the OP and others can see, not even portuguese guys can decide if "preto" is offensive or not

Both refer to black color, some people use "negro", some "preto" generally with the same meaning. In my opinion preto would be used to offend.

At first we will possibly distrust you, but as I said before, we are laid back. Be cool, polite, laid back and if possible bring something to drink.

Thats true I hear the brazilians in Portugal say all portuguese women look like men and they have no as! But the same goes for the portugues people they tell joke like: "What is the diference between cancer and a Brazilian? Cancer evolve Brazilian dont." I meet some nice Brazilian and some nice Portuguese people. I did have some problem with a rich brazilian girl from Rio de Janeiro she was class A1, her father owned some companys and she was really rude to me.

But I gess everybody is different. About the girls in Portugal from Angola and Cabo Verde how are they like? More like the Brazilians?

Girls from Angola and Cabo Verde... well depends, some are more "africanized", others are complete Oreos, as in black outside and white inside. But generally I've found them to be easier than portuguese girls.

Also, enough with the Portugal vs Brazil thing. Both countries have good and bad things,quality of PT women isn't excellent but it's not abysmal either, especially the new gens. That said, it's not a country to come for the women. PERIOD. It's not a country to come to work in (normally), it's excellent for holidays and maybe retiring, but that's it.

That's hilarious. I would say Portuguese women look short with fat asses (not the good kind) and soso faces.

Brazil is definitely a place on the move....but I can sort of relate to that Portuguese joke, bc BR is also a place that hasn't evolved as quickly it should have. Still great potential in the country.

I remember when Cantonese was the more "relevant" business language for ages...since the late 90's...mainland China has broken out of it's stubborn ways & Mandarin then took over quickly as the more important tongue. If that sort of thing can happen in China with all the baggage of Communism, Japanese torture from WWII, and cultural issues from the past.....then there is no reason Brazil can't turn it around either.

I've realized the old money people with families living in Zona Sul of Rio can be some of the meanest Brazilians you'll meet. On their facebook profiles, you'll read "Leblon" or "Ipanema" instead of Rio de Janeiro with regards to "Hometown/Current City."

My middle/upper middle class contacts in Rio can be some of the most overly politically correct & self-righteous people I know. They are quite insecure about others in Brazilian cities that are better than them in certain categories (looks/results) yet choose to stand pant dwelling on that bitterness while expecting to have their feelings coddled. They also feel their own interpretation of Brazilian culture is the "end all be all" of the country, and those disagreeing with them results in moments of awkwardness.

As a gringo that speaks Portuguese, has been through a lot of training, some trips to Brazil, and has met many Brazilians stateside in language mixers...those were the feelings I got about Cariocas. They're extremely well-versed people who have a great understanding of other cultures in the world being well-traveled & all...I just don't see eye to eye with them in regards to their own stubborn interpretation of Brazil though. This is why I prefer Mineiros in that they're capable of thriving in any social situation while maintaining chill/humble attitudes in their quest for self-improvement.
