In Toronto the gay parade is the same day as Canada Day. It's hard to find a Canadian flag waving around downtown on that day, it's all rainbows and companies like Banks and stores shill hard to the gays. My homie complained to our gym staff because it was about 2 days before when we were there lifting and he dissed them as to why they didn't have a sign for "Happy Canada day" but had one for "Happy Pride". He trolled even more bring about up a valid point:

"It's Canada's tolerance that let's Gays freely parade and express themselves, so discounting respect to our nation, on it's birthday, undermines the very idea of what Pride means."

That's brilliant insight. It makes a lot of sense that they would want to cultivate and control a new consumer class. This likely makes up for the completely unreachable hetero market, who nowadays neither buys nor follows anything from Hollywood, at least, compared to previous decades.

Several years ago, I was setting up the bar in the morning and noticed a huge chalk message had been scrawled outside our doors (unsolicited and in the middle of the night) proclaiming the evils of a medical industry that would not accept "gay blood." The exact wording was very controversial and combative. I made a judgement before open to wash it off the sidewalk. Nobody but other employees saw me do this.

I didn't believe the owner or manager would be comfortable with having our prominence abused with lazy, dramatic protests. And there was no protest, it was just lazy abuse of private property.

At the same time, I did not realize it was the pride parade that day, I usually worked late nights but had an open shift and as I said, made the quick judgement call. I had already poured boiling water on it when I was told about the parade.

The other aspect of this, is all other chalk on the street (which I only then noticed) was just pointing out the locations of the parade route and the like. Our bar was the only one with a massive, political message outside, which would make it appear that we were making the statement.

Anyway, a lesbian and a gay man who worked at the bar immediately claimed I was a homophobe and tried desperately to get me in shit with the owner, etc. The GM defended me up and down as looking out for the best interests of the business.

It didn't matter that it was "pride day", it doesn't make sense for a business to scrawl huge politically charged messages outside, and that was why I made the judgement.
They were speechless that business trumped complaining. This actually would result in my promotion in less than a month because the upper management knew I wasn't fucking around.

Even so, I really liked the two of them and would eventually earn their respect through hard work and reliability. We became fairly chummy. The woman was bitter and middle-aged but we got along great. The guy hit on me all the time, but he's overall a cool guy to be around.

Interesting.. I always say follow the money. It's Marxist but he was right about how society works. Gays are very much the ultimate customers because they don't have to raise kids.

However, if they are going to get kids this will change.

This is something that really needs to be brought up more. Homosexuality really is a huge threat to public health. It was one thing when gays largely kept to their own communities. With gayness becoming increasingly mainstream, there's going to be exponentially more experimenting between gay and non-gay individuals.

If it wasn't for gays, HIV would likely have never been much of an issue in the West and, at the least, would have been confined to IV drug users. Heterosexual sex is not an effective vector for the spread of HIV. Higher rates of HIV among straight black women in the U.S., for instance, is almost certainly due to bisexual activity among black men (as well as, perhaps, higher drug use.) Men simply can't get HIV from women with any regularity.

Rates of every other STD are also vastly higher among gays. In comparison, raw dogging as a straight dude seems exceedingly low risk. Encouraging gayness means encouraging sky rocketing disease rates, healthcare costs, not to mention human suffering.

For such a affluent group of people they live lifestyles and have mortality rates that have no relation to their class and "societal" (Aka mainstream American) peers.

It's almost illegal to take stats on them in many cases. Only sexual data is prevalent and open due to the HIV mess that happened with gays in the 80's. The rest of the stuff is kept away. If people knew how off the charts gays were nobody would be trying to show such heavy embrace for them like they do.

They lost it decades ago when they ceded the institutions, particularly the education system. It's all just filtering through now. That's why any swing back to the right is going to have to involve something far right. Conservatives have no credible strategy for victory. All they can do is defend the status quo as it existed one to two decades ago, which is, of course, a losing strategy.

I believe that most "conservatives" are completely ignorant about political strategy. They don't understand that the left are applying the strategies of people like Saul Alinsky and Antonio Gramsci. Then, there is a very small, nefarious minority (most conservative politicians) who are enablers in the process of the destruction of society because they either profit from it or hope to do so.

Before the right can rise again, "conservatism" needs to die.

The figures seem insane because you never hear them. That 1 in 5 figure is from 2010. Could be slightly worse now as gay/bisexual men is the only demographic for which HIV infection rates are rising.

Not necessarily. Shorter lifespan also means shorter period spent in elderly years, during which medical care is most expensive. It could easily be the opposite.

It probably costs less to care for someone who suddenly dies from antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea at 55 than to care for someone who withers away from dementia between 60 and 80.
