I just got approved for Chase Sapphire Reserve, which reimburses for Global Entry application.

I went through it and it was surprisingly easy. You apply on the website, pay the fee, your card will reimburse it automatically. Fill out some forms online, they'll perform a background check on you and you'll get a notification via email. Probably the hardest part about the whole process is securing an in-person interview date. It is booked up all through up to 6 months, especially for most major airport locations. I lucked out by going at 10pm the night before Christmas Eve just because people would rather be on holidays.

I arrived early for the interview at my airport of choice and the officer was courteous. Asked basic questions. We had a friendly chat while they took biometrics and I was done in about 20 minutes. They mailed the card a week later and you just go online to activate it on their site. Easy-poosy. Er, peasy.

Do they just take your fingerprints (which they take anyway when you travel internationally) or do they do other stuff like scan the iris in your eye?

I'm curious what the negatives of them having my fingerprints are.

Pretty sure the government took mine to renew my passport.

As far as negatives to giving fingerprints, that is down to the individual. There's a lot of reasons not to like it, but at the same time it will be of no consequence to most.

Because I had to give fingerprints for a job years ago it made no difference to me to do it for the Global Entry program.

Global Entry does not do iris scanning. The NEXUS program, which is similar to Global Entry but meant for frequent U.S./Canada border crossers, they do iris scanning but only the Canadian border authority does it.

Aside from the fingerprints, the officer took a photo of me for the ID they mailed out. He never mentioned anything to me about an iris scan. So unless the photograph taken was somehow a full, undisclosed iris scan (which it didn't seem to be to me) there might not be one during your interview. Disclaimer: I did not do either NEXUS or Sentry. Only Global Entry and TSA Precheck.
