The thousand yard stare in photographs
What subtle changes in the way one looks into the lense causes the pictured person to look like a serial killer instead of someone with a pleasant look on their face?

I only ask because my new drivers license picture looks like this.

It's because you're meant to be a serial killer. Congrats on finding your calling!

Emotionally detached people's eyes don't open as wide so you don't see the glint.

There's a reason why- I think it has to do with not giving away your intention.

They can't be present because they are dealing with too much inner drama so they focus on a point far away from themselves.

The difference between my 1st and 2nd drivers license with less than 10 years is funny to me. I look like a thug in the second picture.

The thousand yard stare is rare to find in photographs. It's the look of total defeat.

This one from the Great Depression (1936) is rather famous:

RE: The thousand yard stare in photographs
That woman is in deep and lost thought vs The solider post here under her has detachment in his eyes.

I would see this look at work in the Mental ward almost daily. Even in photographs you can see it but if your not used to it you can get thrown off.

The OPs pic has it but the grainy imaging an the stache adds to the "70s serial killer look" the angle saves the picture because when people truly have that "off look" they can be looking strait at at you but it almost looks like they are not.

To me crazy eyes are a sign of a ruined or removed soul. When a person is complete void of all empathy their soul really has little use and withers away, and when that is done the eyes are really rooted on nothing, they lack the ability to properly gauge their environments and most important seek out and connect emotionally. The scary factor comes in in that many of these serial killers are incredibly bright in many cases, not in the traditional sense but very crafty, witty, and smart.

Best thousand yard stare I could find, supposedly taken after a 72 hour battle.

In my experience it has to do with muscular tension in the face and body, thinking too much (not being present) and feeling emotionally detached due to lack of sleep, stress, inner conflicts, neurochemistry being off, etc. Conversely when I'm very present my eyes are really bright, pupils dilated, face glows and looks more attractive (probably due to less muscle tension, smiling more) and I'm much more calibrated and empathetic.

Those have the "thousand cock stare", which prostitutes also have.

I get this stare on pictures at parties if I'm not aware that there is a photo being taken.

I have this weird hollow gaze when I'm operating in the black out stages of a good binge drinking night. Freaky to see sometimes.
