Does anybody else on here not answer the EEOC questions on job applications (ethnicity, gender, disability, veteran status)? Am I blackballing myself not answering them, or is it just on there because of legal reasons, and employers don't care if you answer them or not?

My understanding is that the questions are used in the event company's hiring practices are questioned. Unless they are in violation of the law, it will have no impact on whether you are hired or not.

You're hurting yourself as the HR person will only see it as a sign that you're a "rebel". Some applications require an answer or wont't let you continue (It's happened to me before). It's not supposed to hurt your chances, only to help keep numbers on how many X-Race applicants apply and don't get the job or get the job. It comes in handy during racial discrimination lawsuits

Don't be a "I know my rights! I plea the 5th!" guy, completing the portion will not hurt you and make things go easier.

I usually check them. It doesn't really bother me.

It does bother me when you can only check one box. In those cases, I still check all the boxes that describe my background and let the idiots figure it out themselves.

I had a buddy do that in York university in Toronto. He was European white,,,, and checked visible minority as rightfully he was in that particular schools' program. We all had a good laugh at that.

In certain uni programs in York, white folks are indeed the minority in numbers. So, a little bit if truth in checking visible minority.

Checking white male could only hurt you... But leaving it blank could only hurt you as well... Tough call.

The information doesn't affect a decision, it's against the law and one of the reasons the government asked to collect such information (to see if companies were being picky and choosing too many whites, females, blacks).

It's only "against the law" if the decision is not in favor of the precious "protected classes."

You're naive, man. Employers use all kinds of hiring practices that are technically illegal, but are very difficult to prove.

There are easier ways to find out if someone is a women or foreigner than the identification part.

Hiring around my company isn't shy. When they say a candidate "checks the right boxes" you know what they mean.

I always check refuse to identify. If enough people do it, their jobs become much harder to do by roboscreening.

The US Gov't requires employers report a percentage of the demographics of their employees. One way or another, the employer will gather the data on it's employees and report it to the Govies.

I had a British friend check that he was African on every single job app. Let's just say he got a lot of first interviews.
