The entire getup, suit and pants cost me $200 plus tax, which came out to $228 out the door. I am 28 and just needed a suit for an upcoming event, so I didn't see fit to invest in a Zara or the like. This would be my first suit, but I worked for a short time in the men's suit section of a designer retailer during my early 20's so I'm familiar with the basics of suit quality and the good/bad.

The suit has what I believe to be surprisingly good fit and finish for the $200 price. It's not an Armani for sure, but it blows DKNY and CK suits out of the water. The herringbone pattern isn't too heavy, which hopefully will allow me to wear it year round. The wool feels of very decent quality, I don't like the inner lining on this particular variation because it has this almost athletic-looking mesh on the inside. But it for sure isn't a deal breaker.

I also used a promo code I found online to get a free tie, and I went with the shadow plaid slim tie in purple and got lavender pocket square to go with it.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this company to a young professional or a younger guy just getting into the suit game. If you're an investment banker in his early 40s then you undoubtedly have several better options already gracing your wardrobe.

Now, I need your guys help on the fit if you would oblige me!

I am 5'11 160lbs and their fit tech suggested a 38R jacket. I opted for the 32 pants since my Levi's are that size, but I feel the pants are far too long and the crotch sits too low. I understand suit pants are unhemmed, but these just spill endlessly over my ankles even with 1" boots on. I read online that their pants run small but this doesn't seem to be the case. I am most likely going with a 30 pants instead.

Based on these pics, what alterations do you think I need to make?





My limited understanding suggests I should take the waist in by an inch and raise the back also by about 1-1.5". One problem is that when I lift my arms to the side, the padding sort of bunches up and lifts as well, and it doesn't look good. Is that normal? I would love some suggestions from the suited up veteran players. Thanks in advance.

Honan, get the pants hemmed. There should be zero bunching up at your shoes, they should be straight while covering the lip of your shoe and fall 1-2" past the top of the heel (back part of the shoe).

As for the suit, it looks good to me but maybe a little long. Shortening it will make your legs look longer and give you an overall taller looking appearance. If the alteration isn't too much, I'd shorten it by an inch or two. Read more here: http://dappered.com/2011/07/style-debate...-a-blazer/

The service rep recommended the right size for you; at your height, weight and build, 38R should work very well for you.

First , the jacket:

Shoulders- this is the most important consideration in fitting a suit, since they are not alterable as a practical exercise. The shoulder seam should be right at the outer top of the shoulder. Too wide shoulders are a very common suit fit failure and look terrible. Too tight will constrict mobility and throw off the chest fit. Yours look correct. As for the padding bunching up, those shoulders appear to be well padded and it's a $200 suit so it's just something you'll have to live with.

Length- the standard rule is that the rear hem should fall at the crease where the bottom of your buttocks meets your thigh. A quick test when you're trying them on is to see if the hem just touches the cup formed when you curl your fingers or falls at the second joint of your thumb. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the jacket doesn't look excessively long to me. Withing limits this is a matter of personal taste; I like my suit jackets around the standard length but some of my blazers and sport courts somewhat shorter for a more sporty look. Keep in mind that you are quite limited in how much a jacket hem can be shortened since past a certain point it will ruin the proportions of the jacket.

Chest- Should not be baggy or make an X when you stretch your arms. Yours looks good.

Sleeves- look too long to me. I have mine done to reach the middle of the bone bump on the outside of my risk. You want to show 1/3 to 1/2 an inch of shirt sleeve without the shirt falling down on your hand either.

Waist- your jacket has a modern cut which is already taken in somewhat at the waist. Looks fine to me but taking it in a bit might be ok; you can have your tailor pull it in to show you how it would look

Pants:

Legs- suits come with unhemmed legs. Tell your tailor you want either a "slight" or "moderate" break of the pants hem whichever you prefer. Going shorter with the pants legs is considered more stylish currently.

Crotch- suit pants are not skinny jeans, they will have a crotch that drops down more. Yours looks normal.

When you buy a suit you should budget $100-150 for tailoring. That looks like a decent suit for the money; $200 is super cheap for a new wool suit, so you should easily get your money's worth out of it. Don't dry clean it too much; just hang it and let it air out after wearings, you can steam out any wrinkles.

Maybe they have gotten better.

1) Get pants that fit better. You will need to hem the pant legs, just the way it is to get a good fit.
2) I don't see any shirt cuff showing. Usually you want 1/4 inch or more of cuff showing when your arms are at your sides. If your coat jacket is covering up your shirt sleeves, your jacket sleeves are too long. BUT FIRST!!! Make sure your shirt is the right fit for you.

I neglected to mention that the pants are also about 1" wide around the waist so I would have to address that as well.

Unless you're looking for really high end stuff, Express is a great choice for coats and blazers. They have some on sale right now. As a reference point, I have been wearing these for over a year now. They fit my body extremely well and come off as looking very fitted. I'm not huge, maybe medium build. Definitely recommend you go to a local Express to try on some to figure out your size before ordering. They may even have some more deals in store as well.

Express shirts go to shit after two washes. Tyrwhitt is a good option (one of my favorites).

First post, been reading the forum for a couple of years now, but havent contributed till now, hopefully that's about to change,

Anyways, vestiairecollective.com tends to have great deals on style; its a second hand store, but most of it is like new - headquartered in France, so the ones of us from Europe dont need to worry about customs fees, they stock great high end brands like prada, versace etc at a quarter of the price, def. Worth a look.

J crew makes some nice clothes. I think their suits are better than banana republic. However, most suits will be big in the armpit to accommodate men of different sizes. It bothers me. After wearing their suits for a while I moved on to Vietnamese tailors. You can look up many of them on the internet and they make a suit that will fit you way better than any off the rack suit you can get and the blends in material are the same quality... a 300 dollar vietnamese tailored suit will blow a 600 dollar j crew suit out of the water if executed properly. Buying custom made suits directly overseas cuts out all the middle men like indochino and will save you $$$$$. you just send your measurements and your on file. Better yet, make a trip to Vietnam and find a tailor. It will change the way you perceive clothing.

I have a tailor and 99% of my closet is custom made shirts, pants, ect. my wardrobe is a fraction of the j crew price and I have full control over what I want. Its great.

If you like J-crew but you don't want to pay J-crew prices you can buy their 50% off end of season sales and store it for next year if you have the space.

Nice suit, If I may politely critique some things you may want to tell your tailor.

You're going to want to tell him to take those pants up to 1 break.
tell him you want to take the sleeves up to a show a .5 inch cuff ( thats will subtly reveal your shirt cuff and watch you spent so much time picking out )
button the top and you should be able to just barely slide your fist in between your gut and the coat. if you have too much room than he should take it in. You should have to unbutton it when you sit.
- the length looks good and I dig the double vents in the back.
Last, ditch the boots. maybe try a cap toe, wingtip, or plain dress show, and for fucks sake do not let anyone tell you to buy corrected grain leather, go with full grain leather shoes. in black, or camel, or blue suede if you can rock it.
Thats all i got for you ya handsome son of a bitch, follow these simple steps and you'll see a huge difference.

One of the biggest problems with off-the-rack shirts, coats, and suits is that the armholes are too big/low. This is also very hard for a tailor to rectify. It's one of the best reasons to spend a little more and get made-to-measure or bespoke clothes.

^^^You want it to fit extremely well. I would be wary of the tailor unless they come recommended from stylish guys there in India (which is rare).

1. You can show them a picture.
2. They measure you.
3. They'll tailor the suit.
4. You try it on (realize it needs tweaks)
5. Remind them it NEEDS to look like the picture.
6. Wait..
7. Repeat 3 to 5 until you don't need 5.

Style in India is different. You need to have time, patience and some push back/negotiation skills to squeeze the most out of the experience. Take an experienced relative with you (that knows how to negotiate) for good measure.
