RE: Medellin: watch your back, fellas
Yea, a lot of the guys especially the born Americans/Canadians/Western Europeans who have roots deep in the Western hemisphere get surprised by the get one over moves that generally occur in poorer countries.
It is normal in North America to show one's wealth and broadcast one's worth through clothing, cars and jewellery.
I tend to generally duck that type of move and I only really wear good clothes and nice stuff to succeed at interviews and business encounters as well as impress lizards to fcuk.
I shun from the attention though because I find it will attract hawks.
I find guys from EE or rougher countries tend to be able to roll with the punches in these countries. For instance, I went way off of the beaten path in DR to go to a club joint deep in the city and I saw a white guy sitting at a table surrounded by dark dominicans and the guy just smoked a cigarette and was very much at ease. I am guessing from his look that he was Eastern European from his features. In fact, he looked more comfortable than I did. I was nervous cos I didn't know where the fcuk I was and I didn't have anyone who knew where I was (remember I went to this country on my dolo).
He was the only white guy in an ocean of dark skin and he was as comfortable as hetero dick in warm pussy. I am sure that a guy from England, France or some other pampered country (nothing wrong with being pampered though) may have felt nervous seeing as they were totally outside of their zone.
The point is, poverty brings a similar behaviour and guys from third world countries can generally handle that sort of get one over behaviour better than others.
When I went to the Dominican Republic, I quickly realised that everyone was out to scrounge a buck or more for absolutely EVERYTHING.
When I generally travel, I try and tone down my appearance. I wear basic garms, I don't wear jewellery, no fly watches, no ice and my phone is basic (5 years old).
I also will constantly quote the poorest country I can think off just to get those fcukers to ease off. They would often ask if I was American but I would say Canadian cos Canadians don't have as much disposable income as Americans (met a guy from philly in the lobby who was smoking a blunt and sipping on rum and he was talking about he was tipping the guys 5 dollars a shot) which now makes it HARDER for us non-ballers to go around without getting our pockets constantly stressed.
I constantly had to haggle that by day 5, my head was tired of the stress of constantly negotiating for everything.
Now my friend on the other hand, she went up there with her husband a few years back. She likes to wear a lot of jewellery and I guess so does her husband and she is obstinate in the sense that she doesn't know how to play to the crowd.
She reported that some of her jewellery wound up missing and all sorts of weird stories. I told her that if you walk around in an impoverished country wearing all sorts of shiny objects, it is HUMAN nature to immediately swoop.
Sheet, even over here in the Western hemisphere, often I have guys hitting me up to loan them money, complaining about they didn't get paid on time as if it's my problem.
My point is, one evening I was carried stone drunk back to my room by the hotel help and the security guard in the dominican republic. I had just thrown up in the lobby and I was fcuked up beyond imagine..and it was only 5pm.
I woke up at midnight and checked through my stuff..cash was there, my shytty mp3 player was there and my digi cam was intact.
So either I was lucky or I appealed to the Dominican people.
Also, I fcuked one lizard and went to have a nervous shower afterwards (compiled with the fact that the water was cold and that I didn't know whether she'd run off with some of my shyt. I kept staring back out of the shower..she didn't take anything although she called me tight elbow for not coughing up decent loot.
Maybe it was a combo of luck and foresight.
In fact, the country where my dad is from, a man snatched my aunty's bag in the airport and she had to run his ass down right in the airport and set him straight.
So agreed, ALL developing countries have people trying to get over. It's human nature and survival.
If I lived somewhere where I had to scrounge for every piece of bread I could get and some fat cat came through, brandishing the fly phones, fresh threads, jewellery, spending money that I could only wet dream about, lusting after my sisters and then bounce, I'd be trying to one up on that muthafcuka too. And so would you.
But not at the cost of his life.
