I am live in England, but next weekend I'm having a weekend in London for a family event. I'll also have plenty of free time. I've got a really good deal on a good hotel, but there are some party hostels nearby.

Any good ideas on how to be successful if I go the bars there?

I am a newbie, and I don't do any night game at home, so some basic advice from initial meeting to getting her back to mine/wherever is what I need.

If not, it would be a good idea to start.

Don't expect to just read game literature, show up in London and be able to pull ass. I tried this once and didn't work.

It's going to take some effort from you BEFOREHAND.

To reiterate everything you will be reading, READ "AND" approach, approach and approach. Even of you're anxious, there is no other way.

Building on what Cobra said, if you don't game where you're living right now, it'll be hard for you to clean up as soon as you leave to go somewhere else. If you're starting from ground zero, read some game books and practice "being the life of the party", and what I mean by that is practice going up and talking to everyone. Everywhere you go. If you're in a coffee shop, talk to one girl, bounce to the next, and keep talking to people until you leave. Doesn't matter if they're sexy girls or not, but if youre going from doing zero cold approaching ever to trying to become a huge playboy you're going to run into resistance and probably get blown out if your first cold approaches you're doing are with 8s and 9s trying to pull in a bar. Everyone you talk to is a social reference point for what works and what doesn't, and by talking to the fat chick at the counter of Starbucks or the guy beside you on the subway, you'll put yourself at ease talking to random people in general. Opening is a great and necessary skill for any game, day or night.

Long story short, don't expect to pull this time. If you do, great, but great game can't be learned in a book (although books can be fantastic. If you haven't read bang, do it now), you have to figure it out (and what works for you specifically) in the trenches. The only way to get really good is to do it all the time.

As far as hostel game goes, I've found that it can be pretty easy. Girls traveling tend to have far lower anti-slut defences and are less worried about being judged. Make it clear you're a traveler and not a pua trying to pick up travelers and get to know some cool spots to go with them in the area and you'll be set. You can literally open any girl in and around a hostel with "hey, are you traveling through? Where are you from?". From there move onto what they're doing that day/night, suggest heading to a cool bar down the road and run game from there. Faster you can get her alone, escalate her, and get her in the mood the better. Good luck
