I deleted mine today. Facebook now allows you to deactivate your account yet still allow messenger. This lets me keep in touch with the dozen or so friends I made traveling but without the bullshit of profiles and news feeds.

I deactivated my Facebook account a year ago and I'm not going back. Politics made Facebook toxic for me after hearing Republicans are the root of all evil for the 235th time despite my friends who post this have lived in areas where Democrats have dominated the politics for decades.

Had some thoughts about this since earlier.

Years ago, i was hyper neurotic about Facebook posts and how they reflected on a girls' attraction to me. Or, a girl would get upset about me not giving her enough Facebook love.

I would check girls' timelines constantly. Or tinder swipe constantly. I'd imagine all kinds of stupid scenarios in my head about what Facebook posts meant. Were they about me?

I haven't had that worry or neuroticism for some time now. It's liberating. I was worried that i would lose contact with people but I still get invited out to places. People just screenshot Facebook invites and send me the picture and it makes me laugh.

I don't worry about stupid shit girls put on their online profiles now. I tease them when they take photos if they're putting them on Facebook. Sometimes they say the photos are just for them. They send me photos to me directly. Are they broadcasting to other dudes too?

I don't know and i don't care. I have no means to check and concern myself with it. If they are being shady I'll find out one way or another. Girls have a tendency to say they're seeing other guys, if they are, when i clearly act non judgmental.

And they love sharing their Facebook stalker stories. Makes for fun convo when i tease them with mine.

Not regretting it one bit.

I put "Kill News Feed" on my Facebook and it has been awesome. It removed the need to "check in" that I was having.

Since then, I have used it once in a couple of months. But it is basically useless now with new app - should have done it sooner.

I am curious which PLACE, AGE, LIFESTYLE (going out a lot and doing things/ meeting people in IRL) people are who have done this FOR X amount of time or permanently.. Please share DETAILS so it gives more context on what life look like for you.. Mentally.. Internally.. Externally.. Pros & cons.. benefits & losses of doing so. Very curious to know.

I got rid of it years ago and never regretted it. I basically dislike everything facebooks stands for.

Background: mid-30's, central europe, going to bars rarely to clubs. Aside from occacionally meeting girls via CS, I don't do online game at all. Never been on Tinder.

Obvious benefit: more time for more meaningful stuff, less shitty input from people I don't care about.

To anybody concerned about missing out because you lose a communication channel: if the connection with the person is strong/ real, you don't need a facebook for it to survive. There are plenty of other ways to get in touch with somebody you care about and vice versa. Quality over quantity.

Got rid of the app on my phone in late 2014, only log on every 1-2 weeks to check for PMs, and have a News Feed Blocker (thanks ROK) to avoid getting sucked in when I do. Hadn't joined the community back then, but knew Facebook was becoming too much of an addictive time waste, only to consume other people's vapid attention whoring and getting insecure instead of putting that time towards focusing on improving my own life.

Last profile update was in 2015 when I changed my profile pic to something better reflecting the brand/image I wanted to give off (I was travelling and the opportunity seemed too unique/good to pass up). It exploded with a ton of likes and discussion about it but still didn't jump back in besides replying to people on that thread.

I've had a few close family/friends tell me that Facebook can be decent if you stop following EVERYBODY you don't care to hear about and do a bunch of other profile/setting customizations, but I've got a number of bigger fires to put out in my life before that. Some of these family/friends are so busy taking care of their own lives/family that they rely heavily on Facebook to keep others in the loop (and I'd even say for sincere and not attention whoring reasons), and I'm probably a bit less close with them had I continued to be a more regular Facebook user, though ultimately with circumstances like this, people who genuinely care can understand and time can be shared/relationships can be strengthened again afterwards.

I'd say overall the time saved and invested in other things, plus not spoon feeding info to romantic prospects to develop mystery and maintain interest has been worth it.

What has been your other means of comm? Phone numbers only? or something else?
Do you guys use WhatsApp etc as an augmentation to the phone channel?

I use Facebook for business purposes and for my band ( promotion and internal admin) so without FB I could stand to lose money.

It's all about using FB effectively as a tool to serve your goals. Make FB and Mark Suckergorg serve you and not the other way round.

YouTube, on the other hand, yes I'm addicted to that.

I stopped using it in Medical school as I could not keep up. Then I just went the full route and had it deactivated and have not looked back since then. I would say I have lost at least 20 acquaintances over it; a few "good" friends and several girls just found me "weird".

This is a big edge, the corporate world has over free men. Most people would rather fundamentally succumb to blind mainstream corporatism than dare to be thought of as "odd" for a second.

This is a great idea. I know from experience that Facebook is a huge time waste. So many useless click-bait articles, propaganda, useless games...

If you're not careful you can spend 4 hours pay day on it literally doing nothing. I would love to just delete my account. But I can't shut it down completely because of work, some hobbies and keeping in touch with family.

So I'm trying really hard to only check it once per day and stay as short as possible.

Edit: At least I don't have Instagram and Twitter so it's just Facebook that wastes my time
