I buy Italian at the local italian restaurant whenever I get the opportunity, but any not too dry red will do.. guys who are into wine(of my friends), are mostly obese and have too many money to spend on real stuff in my view.. spend the money on protein and go to the gymn fat fucks!

Indeed. Whatever you spend money on to impress chicks, make sure it's not wine. Get cheap, undemanding wines with a lot of sweetness and fullness to them. They'll love it. Expensive wines tend to be subtle and dry (or "sour"). Very few women know the difference between an Australian Shiraz, a Beaujolais Nouveau and a $1000 St. Emilion. As long as it's foreign and tastes good, they don't care. The same goes for most men, of course.

As an alternative to the Freixenet, try a bottle of prosecco. Lots of women have never seen one, and she'll be pleasantly surprised that it's bubbly, light and somewhat sweet (don't get the Extra Dry), almost like a soda for grownups.

I work in restaurants so I might have some good input here. First, I'm assuming we're aiming for wine that appeals to potential bangs. That's easy: sparkling. There are hundreds of types of sparkling wine in the world and Champagne is just one small slice of the pie. Champagne is the region, btw, there's no such thing is "Champagne grapes" or anything like that. I mean, there are, but they don't make Champagne with them. Someone thought it would be cute to call those little grapes Champagne grapes. I digress.
In France there are a number of sparkling wines that usually begin with the term "Cremant" followed by the region. So you'll see Cremant d'Alsace, Cremant d'Jura, Cremant d'Limoux, and so forth. For the most part, these are outstanding sparkling wines for a fraction of the cost of good Champagne. We're talking 10-15 bucks. And then there is Cava, which is Spanish sparkling wine, and Prosecco, or the recently designated Prosecco di Valdobbiadene. These are also typically fantastic alternatives to Champagne and much cheaper. Where to find them? Actual wine stores. You won't find them at Trader Joes (IMO TJs wine sucks hard, not even worth the value) If you're in any major city, go to an honest to god wine store. Not a liquor store. Not a grocery store, wine store. Wine store employees run the gamut from pretentious and snobby to down-to-earth and helpful. Go in and tell them, "What's a great sparkling wine for $10 that's balanced, not too dry, not too sweet?" Better yet, ask a female employee that knows her shit what her favorite sparkling wine is. If they don't have a number of options for you, the store sucks, find another. If you don't have a decent wine store in your town, order online.

As far as Champagne goes, you have two options: Bust out the Cristal and drink it from the bottle like you're in a Jay Z video, or go for something lesser known that gives more bang for your buck. I like Cristal, I've had multiple vintages as well as the non-vintage, but I'd never pay for it with my own cash. If I went high end, I'd go for Krug. A bottle of non-vintage usually starts around $150. To me high end champagne is a waste of cash on girls, 99% of them wouldn't have a clue what it is, as long as it has sparkles, and I'd rather drink it by myself and do a gram of blow and eat an ounce of sevruga on New Years and maybe give whatever girl I'm with a "taste". You can get really up there with the Salon and the vintage Henriot, but I'd only suggest doing so if you're serious about getting into wine and becoming an aficionado.

Many girls I open wine for don't really "get it", but the ones that do are typically a lot more fun and more interesting to be around.

And then there's red and white....

Using prosecco in place of champagne is the best way to get the fun of champagne, without paying the exhorbitant price that often accompanies a decent bottle. If you wanna look like a 'G' and don't have the coin, you could probably buy prosecco and print up fake champagne labels. Just a thought.

Well, IMO, and this is after hanging out in a lot of wine bars, girls do indeed like fruitier reds. But don't confuse this with sweeter reds. I've noticed girls actually don't like sweeter wines, and with good reason (they usually suck) unless you're talking about dessert wines like Rieslings, Eiswein, Tokaji, Port, Madeira, Banyuls, and so forth.

Girls seems to like fruit and funk, and when I say funky, I mean earthy wines that tend to taste soily or have a high mineral content, wines that almost taste like red meat. I tend to forego the "usual suspects" like cab sauvignon, merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and pinot grigio for lesser known grape varietals. In addition to the fact that I enjoy them more, girls typically do too. When you're talking whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, the best come from France, namely Burgundy and Bordeaux. Many well-known towns appellations use these grapes, like Chablis and Pouilly Fuisse. When I say Chablis, I am not referring to that shit out of a box. A great Chablis or Pouilly Fuisse is not cheap, so I tend to go for wines from lesser known regions and lesser known grapes. Certain grapes like Viognier or Marsanne are typically used for blending in the Rhone region (there are also 100% Viogniers and Marsannes produced in the California central coast, many of them fantastic) but smaller producers are coming up and doing single varietal wines instead of blending, to showcase the grape and a lot of them are very good and much cheaper than the "big boys". We're talking the difference of 10-15 bucks for a great Rhone white opposed to $50+ for a great white Burgundy or Bordeaux.

For red, check out Malbec from Argentina. Has that perfect balance of fruitiness, meatiness, but with light tannins. As mentioned, most girls hate tannin (that palate-stripping, chalky feeling that lingers in your mouth from a heavy wine) Many young Italian reds are great as well, particularly from the Piedmont region like Dolcetto d'Alba and Barbera d'Alba. These tend to be higher acid, lighter tannin wines, which makes them almost necessary with food. You'd be surprised how well these types of red wines go with cheese.

For the absolute most unusual wines you've ever had, check out Sicilian and Sardinian wines. There are literally hundreds of grape varieties you've never heard of yielding flavors you didn't even know existed in wine. It's fun to explore and open new bottles with girls who are into wine who are convinced that pinot grigio is god's gift to women (it's not. I hate that shit) Check out Frapatto, Zibibo, Malvasia (here's a good homework assignment, go into your local wine store and say, "I want to buy an oxidized sparkling Malvasia." They'll probably look at you like you're insane, but it does exist. There is no way in hell they'll have one in stock, so see if they can order you one. It will be one of the best bottles you've ever tasted, and should run under $20.) A rising star in Sicilian wine is Nero d'Avola which runs that similar flavor profile I've mentioned. Fruity, light tannins, medium acidity, something you want to drink a whole hell of a lot of by itself. Open a bottle of that and put on some downtempo or jazz or whatever the hell you listen to and you've got a solid setting to get the kino going....

Hope that's a good start, I realize this is all a bit piecemeal, but there are thousands of bottles worth buying and drinking and it's hard to detail that in a coherent manner.

My quick observations:
Pinot Noir is the end of the road. A very expensive end of the road. Though when its on DAMN SON, BONERTOWN.

California, Oregon, overrated.

Malbec can be ok but needs 10-15 years to really shine.

And dont bother dropping the big $$ on the Ace of Spade bubbly, overrated and overpriced. Better go with Billecart-Salmon...

I'll add more if there is interest. Most important part: dont be afraid to try new things and new matches. Just like in life.

New world pinot might be over but I'll always have a soft spot for Burg. It always surprises me drinking Burg how subtle it is...fresh fragrant strawberries, very light floral notes, sometimes even raw mushroom notes, and then you get some new world shit and it's like drinking a glass full of potpourri.

I knew a few of the Nero d'Avolas & Co typical wines from Sicily but recently, during my last visit to Italy, I discovered the Sicilian "Insolia" for the late summer nights. T

Very, very nice and affordable. I had no idea they drank whites perhaps even more often than reds in Sicily.

Back home in Brazil I found out the only Insolia they had was like 45 USD. I'll wait until I can travel again, that's it.

The only Brazilian wine I'd recommend is Tormentas and related line, by the way. Wine drinkers are F%*!ed in this country, all truly overtaxed and mostly too expensive for what it is.

mulling spices typically involve cinnamon, cloves, allspice, some orange peel, and fresh ginger.

I find california zin (red, not the white shit in a box) takes well to mulling spices, great to drink on cold fall/winter nights. Just make sure you don't heat the wine too hot; alcohol evaporates at around 175 degrees F and you wanna keep that shit boozy. Heat it to 170 (keep stirring the pot and use a thermometer) and let your spices steep. A half handful of spices is probably enough for an entire bottle. Some people like to add sugar which I think is gross; a good california zin should have enough sweetness to it.

Thanks for the recommendations. My favored local liquor store has an online search of all their products, the Elsa Bianchi is $9.99 per bottle. The Urban Uco is $11.99 per bottle. Next time I drop in I'll grab both.

if you enjoy a good glass of wine i strongly suggest you check out the aussie wine offerings, ours are very much up there with the best in the world.

Anything from West Australia such as Margret River is very good, same with the Hunter Region as examples.

New Zealand is also renowned for their Sav Blanc's and pino's.

I am a big Shiraz fan , when done right its like a party in your mouth but Shiraz is a drinkers wine as its quite strong in its character.

I can post specific brands and years if anyone wants more info on our local offerings.

I agree. I hate wine. I consider wine to be one of the planet's biggest scams. Seems like people like it because everyone else likes it. Wine, or any other alcohol for that matter, has never enhanced my meal enjoyment. I don't like to eat and imbibe at the same time. I think wine is the biggest exercise in conformity. But I acknowledge wine is an important ingredient in the bang toolbox.
