I think the Movados and the skeleton watches are a bit too try-hard. Maybe they can work depending upon your style but you have to think more like the G manifesto when it comes to watches. Style and taste are for men, trends and fashion are for women.

The $300 pricetag makes it really hard to find a watch worth wearing so you should go for function, value and heritage. It should be more like how work boots, work shirts and americana are still classy/tasteful on men while being functional.

Given all that, I'm going to say that the best watch for that price range is the Seiko 007 with a NATO/canvas strap thrown on it.





I also think with a higher price, as some have mentioned, the Tissots or Hamiltons could work as well.

I also wouldn't wear a quartz watch.

Well, we can say it's matter of taste. To me, small frame looks neat and retro. Well, growth of everything is simply a modern day thing - phones, cars, watches, food, TV's. I wouldn't be surprised in future watches be size of a plate.

It depends by what you mean by a small dial. I own plenty of high quality watches that are considered small by today's garish style (i.e., 32 to 34 millimeter), but look really sharp. I have a medium-sized wrist. I agree that anything under 32mm is too small.

I think Orient has best entry level, cheap but decent quality watches. They are reliable Japanese watches with in-house automatic movements. There's always 30% discount code for this website but it changes every couple of weeks so google it.

One thing a bit confusing is that on most watch internet sites, they give you the diameter of the whole case in mm (or they don't specify anything about what it measures) and on ebay for instance they usually give you the diameter of the watch excluding crown (Some crowns are thick, some not.) and sometimes even including crown excluding bezel. Not sure I understand it.

Horologists always measure the width of the case without the crown. When in doubt, always ask before purchasing, because many novices include the crown.

I recommend some of Armani's watches. They make a couple really good looking ones in your price range. Got this bad boy last summer for $150 and I love it. Looks great, feels great, and I get asked about it every now and then by chicks.

No, it is not. Look again. The crown pulls out to set the time. It is not part of the case.

No, they do not. The case is the entire enclosure around the watch movement, which excludes the crown (which sets the time).

You need to visit a web site that defines all the parts of a watch and familiarize yourself with the proper terms.

Yes Hamiltons are solid. $300-$1800. The have the ETA movement which is the same as Omega and TAG use (the really upper end ones might have in-house movements).

My hamilton gets complimented a lot and keeps perfect time. Its the best value for an all Swiss made watch IMO. It also has a great American history as a railroad watch.

Let me tell you this - some of the mid range watches have crappy mechanisms. Stuhrling is not a mid range watch - it's a cheap. Very cheap, like, bottom market.

However, majority of watches in mid range actually have proven old ETA mechanisms or similar, which have not so great tolerance (-20, +30 seconds), however, they should be not difficult to maintain and should stand test of time. Check out what movements they use.

Then again, modern era also benefits mid range - you can get tough solar + radio wave watch, and have an accurate timepiece that never runs out of power. Or get an affordable Citizen eco drive watch.

However, since everyone fancies mechanical watches, just go for Japanese ones, or whichever ones use mass production Swiss movements. Avoid mid range watches with fishy movements.

for under 300 I would recommend the following brands to look at
citizen
orient
Seiko
all have good mechanics and will last awhile without breaking the bank.

after that I would say watch makers such as tissot, tag heuer, Hamilton all work well.

vostok is a Russian brand and they make good watches, quality control is a bit off and on however.

Yes. And that is why, like another poster wrote, I am wary of buying a mid-low range watch, because chinese no name brands have gotten to very high aesthetic standards. All the 'cool' stuff like see through cases to the clockwork, the fake realistic looking leather etc, is very common now, which means everyone has one of these recently. That's why I liked the Russian and Polish watches, because they are rather unique and have a good story unlike 'made in massive factory in Shenzen'.

I'd rather like to know where a proper mid range watch begins? What do you get for $500 and what do you get for $1000?

I am guessing Tissot, Tag Heuer and what else?

I feel like high end watches are basically just the male equivalent of a womens expensive handbag. Does nothing special but cost a lot.

At one point in time the accurary of a watches timekeeping abilities would be considered a useful function (wouldn't want to be late to your fancy meeting in 1960) but with todays cellphones synced to a regional atomic clock over the airwaves I don't really see the need or benefit for a $10,000 movement. I'd be more interested in the style of how the watch looked and how it in turn made me look.

I can see if you are trying to run the "I've got cash game" and are attempting to look flush, but I'd think that would wear thin quickly if you were backpacking through SEA and rocking a Rolex or Cartier watch.

I've got two watches that I rock. A timex weekender with a bunch of changeable bands for casual dress and a low end Bulova watch I got as a graduation present years ago.

Sure enough chicks always comment on my $28 dollar Timex and it's a straight sausage fest in terms of compliments and interest I get regarding the Bulova.[/b] I'm guessing it has to do with watch label whoring is primarily a male function.

I know that Panerai limits the production of their pieces. I remember being in Tourneau while buying my Breitling and the salesman was really pushing the Panerai. I was in my Breitling douche phase at that time. I really wish I had listened to the salesman now. Anyways a lot of men who are into the really high end watches are into it as collectors. Some of the movements in some of those watches are really beautiful. It is like wearing a work of art on your wrist. Some of the most expensive IWC watches, the lay person would really never know that it was worth several Rolexes. Maybe like Louis Vuitton purses, but also really nice stuff as well.
