I feel like high end watches are basically just the male equivalent of a womens expensive handbag. Does nothing special but cost a lot.

What you are missing is that if you have money and are an intelligent consumer, you can purchase a pre-owned high-end watch for about half of its retail value and then wear it for years (or even decades) and have it retain its value -- or even appreciate in value.

A high-end watch does not typically depreciate below fifty percent of its retail price, unless it is an expensive no-name brand or you beat on it. If it is a highly collectable brand, it will actually appreciate in value.

I am guessing Tissot, Tag Heuer and what else?

I'd consider around a grand to be a mid range watch. Something like a Tag Heuer F1.

Picked this one up for $89 from the fossil shop.

They also have a buy one get one half price deal at the moment.

Where can I find Russian Sturmanskie/Strela watches? There seems to be too many versions out there and which ones are genuine replicas vs fakes I'm not sure. Any Russian watch experts feedback will be much appreciated

Not sure about Sturmanskie/Strela but for Vostok watches this seller above is usually recommended on watch forums as reliable and not a rip-off source.

Rotary make good "homage" watches - there is one on Argos in the UK for £60 which looks a LOT like the Breitling Navitimer.

I love this watch, for under $300 it looks modern yet elegant, and it has eco drive, aka solar power.

I just don't get why it is so difficult to post an image here. I click on the insert image icon, it asks for the url, I paste it, but it doesn't work. Weird. If some one can fix it please do so or tell me how. You would think that posting what it asks for would make it work.

I second the timex weekender with leather strap. Less than $50 so you never have to worry about it. Looks exactly like a bell&ross without the price tag. I like some of CCCP's designs, specifically the delta and typhoon- can't post pics on mobile. Their website advertises for around 800-1000 but can be found online for under $300. Plus they're Russian so could be a nice conversion piece for you.

Seiko Black Monster with a custom bracelet. The Black Monster has an automatic movement, can be bought with a rubber diver type strap or with a link stainless bracelet. Cost on ebay from a foreign seller should be in the $160 to $200 range.

Monsters have a shroud outside the bezel, a common feature with the much more expensive Seiko diver models.

For a few years I rocked a nice watch with a sexy face and metal band. Nowadays, I find this watch to be too shiny. I don't like it. Lately I've been rocking simple all-black watches from Guess. I really like the style.

Here's what I'm currently rocking (~$100)

[Image: product1_82248_600x600.jpg?file=GUESS+Fe...ch+-+Black]

I don't see this style often, so maybe a lot of people don't like it. It fits me well though. I'm interested in finding more similar watches.

Nixon's quality is pretty top notch and they usually peak at around $500. http://www.nixon.com/us/en/clp/mens-watches/

Michael Kors also, I own this one and get tons of compliments on it. For a very moderately priced watch it looks much more expensive.

RE: Good mid-range watch (under $300) with classic appeal?
I know this is an old thread that was resurrected but gents, don't buy a Invicta or a Stuhrling. There is nothing wrong with a cheap watch but when you buy something that jacks up the retail price only to sell at "80% off" on QVC, it says a lot about the wearer. If you google a watch brand and the first hit is overstock.com, that is saying something. There is no shame in buying a Timex.

On a similar vein, do not buy a designer watch. You are only buying a Fossil that costs more because of a name stamped on it. If your sole intention is to impress women who are clueless about watches then by all means, by a Michael Kors, just don't let any guy see it.

Its over $300 but you can definitely buy a Rolex as an investment. This is a great resource: http://tynan.com/community/buyrolex

RE: Good mid-range watch (under $300) with classic appeal?
First, the broad strokes. I would keep my search to Swiss and Japanese made watches. I wouldn't bother with EE companies and the German heavy hitters of A. Lange & Sohne and Glashutte way beyond what you want to pay, especially Lange.

Second, I would concentrate on brands part of the Swatch group. These range from Hamilton to Omega and Blancpain so you can get some of these high-end movements in much cheaper watches. And go for an automatic. They aren't as precise as a quartz but it's akin to having an artist paint a portrait vs a computer generator.

I've seen a lot posters advocate Hamilton. I have to do the same. Bang for your buck, you won't get much better than Hamilton and Seiko 5. And to be frank, you won't find many "quality" watches around the $300 price range. However, if you're primarily interested in using the watch as an eyecatcher for girls, where 99% wouldn't know a Fossil from a Patek, those whatever fashion brand watch sold at Nordstrom would work fine.

However, since you stated you're looking for classic rather than panache, I wouldn't buy the watch from any place where you can also buy a tie. You'll be paying for style over substance.

Ultimately, get what you like, but I'd recommend allowing yourself to spend a little more than $300. The great thing about name (meaning pretty much any Swiss made) watches, is that their value increases over time.

This is one of my favorite watches, not pricey at all at about $120.

I owned two of them, and I got lots of compliments over the years.

The simplicity of the design does it for me, as I gravitate aesthetically towards minimalism.

Digital, but with a classic look to it.

It's the Diesel DZ7035.

Movado museum piece is a nice looking classic and most women recognize it. But I got the most compliments in America by women. My spouse just recently bought me a new one , they run good discounts at Ashford.com under 300.

I need to get mine cleaned and oiled. Very reliable and looks good. Not to mention all watch repair shops can fix it.

I should add, that not all watch repair places are the same! My advice is poor!

Do NOT take older watches or expensive time pieces to any fly by night watch repair shop.

The same watch I mentioned above stopped working after I had its globe replaced. I took it to a more reputable watch dealer. Ended up paying $650 for a complete overhaul. The guy showed me where the previous idiot damaged the gear. Absolutely floored.

I baby it now. If you're going to get an expensive watch treat it with extreme care!

Under a thousand, but jeez, at that point, might as well get some other luxury watch, bulova or omega or whatnot.
