That Chihuahua place at the start of the BBC video has really good burritos, I ate there a few times while staying at the Great Eastern hotel in the sketchy part of Makati, go for the good Mexican food, but don't stay in that area.

Haven't tried Chihuahua but El Chupacabra is close by as well and it's pretty decent too. There's also a good falafel place called Beni's falafel.

Although, with Manila food standards it's hard to say what quality you will get on any given day from any restaurant.

I agree that the (great eastern) side with the redlight district is pretty shitty but across the street is really not bad if you want to stay in Makati. However i'd really really encourage people to stay in Gramercy or the best western owned condotels (Avenue, Antel, Serenity) nearby.

On that side you have century city mall and SM (avenue mini mall) all within walking distance. It's very very convenient and it's also easy access to Rockwell. They also have a fairly regular night market with a cover band in the parking lot in front of that SM. It's not a bad place to take a date for a quick snack before you go bang or you could do what a friend of mine did and spend a couple weeks sport fucking girls (customers and staff alike) from the supermarket.

Not only are Filipinos genuinely friendly, but I frequently overpayed for things on purpose, since the amounts were trivial to me (and as a show of goodwill and a thank you to show my appreciation for the good or service purchased) and four or five times, the girl or guy adamantly refused the overpayment.

Many times they would accept the tip, but other times they would refuse it.

This is in stark contrast to Mexico where not only would a tip never be refused, on the contrary, I am automatically overcharged if the seller knows I'm American.

I was impressed by Filipino hospitality and honesty in their dealings with me.

There's also scammers that will approach you at the large malls (if you look like a foreigner), and hookers as well (masquerading as non-hookers, but it would take a complete buffoon to fall for their ruse), even in areas you wouldn't think this goes on in, like say a McDonalds in an upscale part of town.

But this criminal/lowlife segment of society is a tiny minority of the generally nice/good Filipino people, and they prey on fools, so they're easy to avoid, simply keep your wits about you and ignore them/walk away.

1-2 weeks is usually all airbnb. Personally I try to do a month minimum anywhere.

A lot of condotels aren't supposed to be rented out on a daily basis but as with anything in manila this rule is flexible.

You can also try negotiating with owners directly on sulit for short stays. This can be a bit risky but i've had good luck with this in the past.

Best thing is trusted local friends who have relatives or own condos outright.

Salcedo also has some nice places. It has a pretty great Saturday market and is right across the street from Ayala triangle.

Its biggest con is that it is not in a prime location. It is located in a decent location, and compared to the rest of Manilla in a very good location, but it is not in an optimum location. The prime locations are just north or northwest of the Greenbelt or in The Fort area.

For example, living north of the Greenbelt provides access to Greenbelt 1-5 in Ayala Center, Glorietta Mall, the SM Makati department store, the Makati Cinema Square, the Landmark department store, and the A. Venue Mall. All of these places are within easy walking distance, except the A. Venue Mall, which is about 1-1/2 miles away. In addition, unlike the Gramercy, this area does not sit at the edge of a seedy red light district (the Burgos Street area).

So, the Gramercy does seem to offer superior amenities for the cost, but you are not in an optimum area for meeting the local women. If you stay for a month, you can indeed save hundreds of dollars by staying at the Gramercy (versus the Greenbelt or The Fort) and stay at a better place, but your options for meeting women and especially your logistics will be far more limited. So, it depends on your goals. You will not have maximum pulling opportunities there. My opinion based on my research. I have not yet made it to the Phils, but just finished reading every Phils thread on this forum and researching the geography.
