^Are you kidding me, HCE?

Alpha Centauri is one of my favorite games and is *greatly* underrated.

Game itself is awesome, but the mixture of philosophy and technology is unparalled.

I play multiple times a year and I am always the University.

Have yet to beat on the most difficult setting. Insanely hard.

I've had some friends dismiss it out of hand due to "lack of graphics" (back in the time when all graphics were like that). Their loss, heh. I don't play it much nowadays, maybe one game in two years.

I almost always play a random faction, a random map size and random climate/geography and always play on the highest difficulty (Transcend). I'm so used to the "each citizen after the 1st is a drone" and other penalties that it feels strange not to have them. My win rate is well over 50%, though many games take a long time.

The expansion was great for a short time, but it's not balanced nearly as well and starts to get boring after a while so I stick to the original game.

Civilization and Age of Empires were great. I don't have the time or patience for games anymore.

Did anyone else used to play Theme Park? That was fun too.

I remember being reduced to tears as a kid trying to install it for days in DOS!

Yep, one of my favorite real-time strategy games. Not as well balanced as Starcraft or Warcraft, but with a very fun story and a great "feel". There's nothing like building a regiment of Valkyries or Scarabs and charging at someone's army.

I'm a big fan of Heroes of Might and Magic III myself. There is just something incredibly cool about a video game where the "Red Pill" is a working cheat code, and is, indeed, the most powerful cheat code (it makes you instantly win).

Not to mention the game continues to get some really cool fan made mods. Wake of Gods kept the game fresh last decade, and Horn of the Abyss is keeping the game fresh in the 2010s. Not to mention the Heroes3 HD mod, which makes the game run beautifully in Windows 7 and 8 on modern high-resolution displays.

HoM&M 3 was a great game, but i get into it thanks to HoM&M 2 ( i later played HoM&M 1, that was old school). I love it. I also loved Alpha Centaury (i consider it the continuation of another game i love, Civ 2). Also, i have fond memories of games like Fallout 1/2, Baldur`s Gate, Planescape. M&M 6/7/8. So many old games.

Looks like a lot of fun but I never was much of a CPU gamer, other then Ultima 6. I played these two on SNES they seem like they might be the closest games I played.... but after reading this thread I don't think they were as good or in depth as AOE.

That is Blade of Darkness...

Very underrated, but still a great game. I remember when I did not get The Sword and could not defeat the last boss, that was really painful. Stopped playing right, that game was unforgiving as usual.

Ok, so I found a website where you can play Centurion Defender of Rome online and tried several games for an hour. Got stomped horribly.

I wonder how I was so good at this game when I was a small kid.

I used to play AoE3 online a lot. I really looked up to this gamer called 'ThePerfectToe420'. Only now 7 years later do I realize my gaming idol was a pothead with a foot fetish. Yeezus that guy was good. I remember one time to improve my skills I sat down with a notebook, turned Queen Isabella on Expert, used a cheat code to view the whole map and literally took notes on what the computer did, in chronological order for like an hour. I used Tuck Tuck Tuck to get a monster truck and smashed her empire when I got bored.

Starcraft is fun, but after a while you have to decide whether to take it up as a serious sport and resign on real life or completely abandon it. You cannot be a busy womanizer and play it once a year for nostalgia reasons because the skills needed atrophy.

Age of Empires is a fun game you can hit rarely and not miss on real life.

Of course this is completely subjective.

Loved that game along with all the other old C&C games (even Red Alert 2 despite it being horribly unbalanced... tank rushing noobs was always fun).
