I should have known.. the evening was moving too fast.

Sometimes I wonder if we as a society overreact to herpes. Now I've never had it so maybe it's damn awful. But sometimes people talk about it like it's Ebola. From what I understand, the first breakout is the worse and consecutive breakouts become less and more rare. Most people who have the virus are asymptomatic. So just because a girl doesn't mention having or herpes or never had a outbreak doesn't mean she doesn't have it. Trust me, every person reading this has slept with a girl before who had herpes whether she knew it or not. And if you do get it, is it all that big of a deal?

Also, if you had it and knew it, what do you think your moral obligation is in telling someone you have it? Assuming you aren't breaking out?

Morally you should tell people, but what actually happens is up to you.

The issue with getting it is that it create and obstacle for some opportunities and serious damper others depending on your profession and aspirations. Mothers can pass it to their children during birth which can cause blindness and airway complications. It's not the end of the world, but there are really good reasons to avoid it.

Look into studies on the herps. There are many variations of the virus, something along the lines of 50. Most are asymptomatic, but scientist aren't conclusive on all of the symptom causing ones, and on which ones will cause symptoms if they make contact. It's worth reading up on. The CDC website has detailed information on it

the medical community seems to be unanimous that yes, as a society we overreact enormously. The history of it is somewhat interesting: a pharmaceuticals company created a drug that treats herpes (valtrax, or an early version of it) and there was no market. Nobody cared about herpes until the company ran a 15 years scare campaign. essentially, most people have mild outbreaks that last less than a week once or twice a year, but we are terrified of contracting it

Well, I've never had it myself, but from the patients that come in to see me I gather the following :

- The infection tends to recur at the most awkward moments possible, like just before a job interview or a date.
- The lesions are painful, at its worst its apparently like someone constantly holding a lighter to the area. ("It burns so much!" as my one patient complained)
- The lesions can spread into the inside of the mouth, making it hard to eat
- They are quiet unsightly and seem to affect people's confidence quite a bit.

That said, most people who carry the virus probably don't get symptoms, it's the unlucky few who are screwed by it though.

A few medical issues:
- Active herpes lesions make you more vulnerable to other STDs in general. For example, you are more likely to catch/give HIV if you have an active breakout of STDs. One of the reasons South Africa has such a high HIV infection rate is due to all the other STDs floating around in the background.
- Rarely, Herpes Simplex can invade the brain, which can kill you,

I have done a bit of googling.

It seems that both types of herpes are very common, and there is no need to worry about it much.

However, it is still very annoying, and will never be completely eradicated from your body; it may reappear if your immune system is weakened.

In my case, I have had a mouth herpes (got it somehow as a kid), it itches and hurts to touch, but nothing serious ever happened, and it always dissapears after a few days.

I am already registered for some time (courtesy of my parents), and the expiration date is not close yet.
