Usually to go offshore you have to stay with one of the major land contractors for a few years and get to the derrickhand, assistant driller, or driller level. H&P, Nabors, Trinidad, Patterson UTI would be good places to start. Land rig living conditions are horrible though.

it takes time to get experience and skills because from what I understand about offshore, you need to know your shit because of the danger and liability of things going wrong. It' a lot more dangerous and every person on the crew needs to be up to speed and know what they're doing.
