I work in the Health Insurance Industry....selling the socialized health care program that we now call obamacare. The premium you will pay is entirely based on your income you report when you do your taxes. There are some tricks to this. For example, the maximum you can earn as a single earner(since most of us are) is right around $46,000. This income is your MAGI(modified adjusted gross income). Therefore it takes into account any disbursements from investment accounts such as dividends, Social Security Income(as long as it's not supplemental security income). On the other hand, if you're self employed it can help decrease your adjusted gross income as you have to account for self employed health insurance deduction, self employment tax. Also, an IRA contribution(max of $5,500 which is a deduction) can decrease your adjusted gross income. Take everything into account when you calculate the income you will use to buy Health Insurance as your subsidy can increase greatly and make a big difference in your annual premium.

If you are young and healthy I recommend buying a bronze plan with an HSA compatibility. As another roosher posted before me you can setup a Health Savings Account with your bank and use it as a deduction as well(lowering your MAGI). Having an HSA with a bronze plan allows you to pay for all medical expenses with before tax dollars.

It's busy I have to get back to work. Also, the last day to sign up is March 15 NOT the 31st. Insurance companies need time to process your application if you want insurance for April 1. Otherwise you will end up with an effective date of MAY 1 which will mean you may have to pay a 3 month prorated penalty of 1% of income or $95 whichever is greater.

I am 27. Before Obamacare I paid $110 per month for a high deductible plan in California. After Obamacare I pay $208 per month for the exact same plan with a $5000 deductible. Thanks Obama--now I get to subsidize birth control, abortions, and specialized female health.

My premium more than doubled under VaginaCare, because of the "essential" coverage that I need that I never had before, e.g., OBGYN and pregnancy care.

Mine went down from 900 to 400 a month with BCBS. I have a preexisting condition but take pretty good care of my health. .

Bump.

There is a week left to sign up for health plans in the US through the marketplace. I was browsing it (healthcare.gov site) this evening and individual plans in my age bracket (mid 30s) range from $200-$450/mo with deductibles ranging from $0-$6200 accordingly. Most have annual out of pocket maxes at $6200.

I have been "self-employed" all of my adult life and have never carried health insurance so this is all a little overwhelming with so many options and the high costs. I have until 1/31 to pick a plan.

Any tips from US based members who have bought individual plans recently?

You must be healthy and young or at least just healthy if you've never had health insurance (not requiring follow up care or meds).

You will probably be fine with a Bronze plan (the cheapest). See what their "Catastrophic" plan is - basically bare bones coverage in case of an emergency.

All academics and attorneys despise men, especially young men. This should come as no surprise. If you vote for either, you're the problem. Obamacare sucks, but there are plenty of people on this forum who supported Obama, so they're getting what they deserve.

Obama care made insurance companies richer and just made personal medical bankruptcy more profitable for hospitals. People still go bankrupt but it is a smaller amount and the hospitals that overcharge get more.

Also Obamacare basically enslaved every american to work xtra because it put a price on care at at least "10% " of income not including deductibles.

It also discourages Americans to work hard because if you go over the ceiling you lose the subsidy and could be paying a very high price. A slap in the back because those workers taxes will go to buy insurance for others when they themselves can't afford it.

Every American against it should NOT pay the penalty. Just do estimated taxes and make sure the gov't don't owe you a refund. The law doesn't allow the IRS to come after you..just to not give you a tax refund owed.

Does anyone in the US know how to navigate Obamacare? I had health insurance last year and did not enroll this year due to open-ended travel plans, thinking that I'd enroll once I got back and pay the "no insurance penalty" for the months I did not have coverage. Now that I'm coming back to this it looks like I am unable to enroll unless I qualify for a "special enrollment period" (which I don't). Does that mean I have to pay the penalty for all 12 months vs x/12 months and do not have the opportunity to get health insurance either? What the cuck?

It's really good insurance with small co-pays, and a not-so-high out of pocket maximum. PM me, and I will give you all of the details. And, I'm pretty healthy myself. I think about these topics in a worst possible scenario type of way. If, God forbid, I was in a bad car accident, EVERYTHING is basically paid for.

Countries with free health care often mean they will save your butt from dying. After that they want you out and you are on your own. Most paid health insurances are like that too. A sense of false security is what they really seem to sell. High quality and reliable health care insurance usually costs a lot.

Exactly the case with Swedish health insurance and taxation. I'd rather pay $380 a month out of pocket and make $200k a year with low taxes than wait 5 months in line for a simple adenoid surgery, get paid $100k for the exact same job and pay 60% tax at the highest bracket.

Even California state tax is nothing compared to Western Europe. Free healthcare today is nothing but a simple lie that the EU fetishists want you to believe. It's not free if it comes out of your taxes. Anyone who doesn't believe me is free to try to get anything as simple as a blood work done in Europe.

I live in Canada and am looking to get private insurance in the U.S now. The health care here in Niagara makes me want to retch every time someone mentions it being 'free'. It's so bad it's downright evil. What they do to fleece the taxpayers here sickens me. Free? Ha! That's like saying the military protects you for 'free'. Someone, somewhere pays out the ass for it and since it's government-run there's little incentive to improve service. As for Canadian health care, it only really works if you die first. If you've got the Flu, sure go on in and get half-decent treatment. But heaven help you if you've got a serious, life-threatening illness in Ontario and are poor.

I can't speak for Alberta though. Maybe it's a little better, who knows. Never been out that way. But I wouldn't bet the ranch on it being light-years better than here if Calgary is as queer as they say.

I saw four doctors (surgeons) for an issue I had a couple of years ago, an embarrassing muscle infection some guys get that I won't mention here. Suffice to say those four quacks (all middle eastern with a 'medical degree' that wasn't immediately identifiable to me) all blew me off and one didn't even bother with an exam to say nothing about offering me an MRI. They laughed when I inquired of it.

Later I went to see an ophthalmologist about fixing a different problem - an eye issue I've been meaning to get fixed here in Ontario to "boost my confidence and self-esteem". It really destroyed my approach no matter where it took place. Malls. Churches. Wherever. So I said, fuck it I'll pay cash. The cranky old bastard said no and referred me to Google saying 'google the problem yourself'. Fast forward a bit and now I'm booked to have surgery from a top surgeon in Ophthalmology who is... I kid you not... from Ontario. Impeccable credentials. It seems all the good Ontario docs fled to the states when our beloved premier, a dyke feminist who looks like Orville Reddenbacher, took office.

If you get something serious while in Canada and you've got the dough - get it done in the USA if at all possible. You don't want clowns with scalpels getting anywhere near your body, especially if their head boss is a whack job.
