I should mention there's actually name brand stuff at Saigon Square. (I'm guessing you grabbed a North Face backpack.) You can just pick up a shirt at Saigon Square, or you could have one tailor made in D1. http://www.shopdung.com/ (Dung Tailor) has had a lot of positive reviews online. You might be able to find somewhere else with some better fabric (depending on what you want made) but their service seems to be quite reputable. I haven't had a chance to wear my shirts yet.

This is a reply to a two year old post, but how does HCMC compare to Bangkok in terms on having a tailored suit made? Quality and price wise.

RE: Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) March - July 2014?
One thing that got me a couple times in Vietnam was big bills and cabs.

I took a taxi to the airport, was in a hurry and tired as fuck. I had a 200k bill ready for the ride, since I knew it'd be just under that. We get to the airport, I hand him the 200k and wait for change. He pauses for a minute, and hmm - my 200k was actually a 10k (similar colors). He points to the meter.

I think fuck, I guess I'm really tired. I've got a 500k here, so I hand that to him. That magically becomes a 20k.

What are you going to do in that case? The fucker doesn't speak a word of English and it's your word against his.

This right here. That's what I'm talking about. You have to slow down and be mindful of what note you are giving them. Sneaky gits.

To expand on this:

500k notes and 20k notes are almost the same exact color.

10k is slightly between the colors of 200k and 100k.

100k, 200k and 500k notes are bigger than the rest of the money.

Keep large bills separated from small bills using a card or something in your wallet.

Ya - I knew very well what I'd given him, both times. But what am I going to do? He did some slight of hand and played innocent. Getting the cops involved wouldn't have been a good idea.

Oh - while sitting in the airport waiting I called Vinasun to lodge a complaint. I'd taken a picture of the drivers cab number. The one answering the call didn't speak much English but took my number.

While sitting at the gate my phone rang and someone speaking good English called me from Vinasun and went over exactly what my complaint was. I hope something came of it.

Important question to guys on the ground. What is the ladyboy situation?
I am pipelining with IG and I don't see any. Either they are not online a lot or operations are made extremely well. How does it compare with Bkk and Manila?
To be clear I don't like ladyboys not the other way around Big Grin

I've been here a few weeks now and haven't encountered any. I even walked past a place which my local girl said was a hangout for ladyboys but it was practically empty (apart from a couple of shifty middle-aged white guys nursing beers). There must be a few around, especially in the tourist trap bars such as Apocalypse and Go2, but it's nothing like Bkk. Maybe others had a different experience.

Not a real issue in Vietnam. Thailand is a whole different beast.

The ones in Philippines are pretty obvious 98% of the time.

@r-jack and Tweezy: Good news my friends. Because I started to think that maybe my ladyboy detection mechanism was impaired due to few months spent in Europe.

@Tweezy: The most lady looking lady boy I have ever encountered was in Manila - Valkyrie club. The only thing that saved me is that it had a obvious ladyboy looking friend. So when I picked that subject it confessed.

There are def some female looking ladyboys in Manila. But overall, not many and I can almost always tell.

When it comes to Tinder for BBK you gotta be cautious and ask a few times if she is a real female. Hell, ive noticed many girls in Bangkok mention that in their bio.

Some on tinder and wechat in Saigon are indeed ladyboys. Was setting up a date and after we agreed on a time and place, she said "before we meet, I do need to tell you I'm a ladyboy." She really did look like a female, and it being Saigon, my ladyboy radar was off... whereas in BKK it would always be on.

Always keep your guard up. Never assume that if a city in SEA isn't BKK or Manila, there are no ladyboys.

Dude, are you kidding me? There are tons of ladyboys on PNL/Bu Vien roads which is the main (outdoor) drinking street. Thankfully IME they are pretty blatant about being trannies but I spotted a couple that were trying to be secretive about it. With Viets, something about their mannerisms make it an easy giveaway. I never used Tinder in Saigon so can't weigh in on that

Does anyone have a read on where would be a good spot to hunt for a girl for LTR/wife search in Vietnam? I was thinking more church girls, educated girls (colleges?), etc? I'd like to get your thoughts regarding Vietnamese women worthy of a LTR, and where would you look to find them primarily? I'm not interested in picking up more notches per se, more so filtering strongly to see if Vietnam is a possible spot for a wifey hunt. Thoughts?

Yes there are ladyboys in Vietnam, and they are around there (Pham Ngu Lao/Bui Vien). But you shouldn't be. That's two streets of tourist shithole. Don't go anywhere near there and you'll have a much better opinion of Saigon.

'Day' game is also restricted to nighttime, since it's just too hot to walk around. The city also isn't very walkable in general--it's built for motorbikes. I don't want to sound like a negative Nancy but Saigon is far from the pussy paradise some people are hyping it up to be.

Excellent advice from Patriarch, i've been here on and off for a year now and couldn't have put it better myself. Tinder is great for quantity, but expect flakes and lack of quality. Vietnam Cupid is the best of the bunch but still tread carefully.

You guys can speak for yourself. I am very picky and grade harshly. Usually I rate a full 1-2 points lower than most guys. Most men's 7-8's are 5-7's to me.

I have found plenty of hot women online in Vietnam. Way more hotter girls (numbers wise) compared to Bangkok and Manila. And even in those places you can find a few really attractive women if you put in some time.

In addition to the above, another thing that makes online game in VN very good is the lack of competition. Not a lot of young good looking Western guys on those sites that are actually in HCMC. Especially VN Cupid. I expect every girl I message on there to reply and meet me.

Is scamming that prevalent in Vietnam? So many websites that I read about this place talk about constant scamming / overcharging of tousists.

I'm not sure where you're getting your experiences from but I've spent the last 2 months in Manila and the last 3 weeks here in Saigon and to me this place is infested with young, tall, good looking guys compared to Manila.

Absolutely infested by comparison.

I get "some" replies on Viet Cupid, but the conversation dies quick and it's hard to get them to meet up, they often flake and they often want you to speak Vietnamese.

Then when you get them on the date, it can be like pulling teeth to have a conversation. The Philippines is way better for online game and foreigner value. For me, as a mid-40's guy anyways.

I've thought about going back to the Philippines, but I do like the food and climate in Vietnam this time of year better, along with the layout of the city with it's interesting cafe's/etc.. Also there are some great forum members here I enjoy hanging out with and I feel like if I can learn Vietnamese than I'll start to have access to more girls. It's extremely hard to open a girl on the street/coffee shop/etc when she doesn't speak English and that's how it is for most girls. I do prefer the Viet look compared to the Pinays so I'm hopeful after 6 months here I'll be able to find what I'm looking for in an LTR

In what world are these two things different? The Vietnamese are notorious scammers. They scam westerners, they scam other Asians, and they scam other Vietnamese...in the center of Hanoi and Saigon. If you stick to touristy places then yes, you will get scammed a couple times.
