I live in Canada, we just had one brutal winter which is on-going.

I don't get colds, if you do then there is something wrong with your immune system. I drink alot of green tea and try to eat healthy, I have bad days with junk like most people. I also exercise which I am sure most of you do as well.

I would never take Nyquil or any of that over the counter junk.

Nebulised salt water/saline inhalations 2-3 times a day always sorts it out. Might take 3 days or so to completely go away.

The nebuliser (or nebulizer in North America) works well, but you can try the old fashioned method, which is to put your head over a pot of steaming water (try not to make it too hot) and then put a towel over your head. I used to do that but the heat was irritating and sometimes made my cough worse.

Some of my patients insist on taking asthma medication for the cough. If it works for them, I don't see why not. I generally give a salbutamol/ipratroprium bromide combination pump to use as necessary or a 7 day course of montelukast tablets. You might be able to get the pump without a prescription, depending on your local regulations - speak to your pharmacist. If you get the pump, watch a couple of youtube videos on the technique of using it so that you know you're doing it right.

Another option is to take a cough suppressant, although this always seemed to drag out the coughing over a longer time span for myself. Your pharmacist can probably give you something over the counter.

Take a break from smoking and drinking.

Lots water or tea with lemon, lots of sleep, lots of fruits and vegetables, soups, and any other foods that feels soothing to you.

Plus, try to avoid speaking in order to allow your throat to rest. Keep your throat moisturized with liquids and coconut oil.

The hot shower is great because it breaks the fever. I should try going into a sauna when I have a fever. That would be heaven!

Mucinex will help that. The generic is called guaifenesin.

Try to focus on how to prevent getting a flu instead of how to treat a flu.
Once you got the flu you are already fucked and too late for the game. Doesn't matter how many rabbits you got in your hat, you still have to wait the flu out in one way or another before you have recovered.

Anyways.
Since I started to take a spoon of high quality fish oil daily, I haven't been sick or had a flu at all.
Not even during the winter.

Highly recommended.

Currently going through a flu while not drinking anything at all for it except ginger tea, I haven't felt this bad in ever. Amazing how your body gets rid of something when you're not helping it

Restart here since it's cold season: the way I look at cold and flu treatment is that sleep is the best medicine - long, uninterrupted sleep sessions. At the very least, if you're sleeping you're not conscious to feel the discomfort.

I find that cold and flu symptoms interrupt my sleep, so I focus on taking fever reducers (tylenol and advil), decongestants, and sleep aids so I can sleep a long time and let my body fight the infection. There's some debate about whether letting your body stay in a fever state will help it resolve the illness, but I'm not going to feel like shit so I take the drugs.

I feel like shit since returning from the weekend in Atlanta. I am gonna OD on Zinc and multivitamins. Haven't been sick in a while, let alone in the winter. I guess going to workout isn't smart this week?

if you often get cold/flu, i would bet that there's something that's not right in your system. no one can diagnose your sickness without knowing your blood work results. also, i would encourage u to take C reactive protein test to check whether there's any inflammation in your system. i had all sort of funny sickness like bloated face, coughing, flu, etc before i finally understood what's causing it. when i found out that root canal is actually dangerous for you, i took it out. then i got all nasty reactions after the extraction... like constant coughing and flu, etc....for two weeks... before i finally got better. my root canal was causing inflammation in my system and i didnt know it for more than a decade... two months after extraction, i no longer have brain fog,, and my health is superb. no one can tell what's wrong with you till you self diagnose yourself. most of the times, dentists and doctors are bad stories. be your own doctor/dentist.

I have the usual fish oil and multivitamin. Swanson is my favorite. If I feel the symptoms coming on;

-emergenc-c
-Hot green tea, honey and lemon
-vicks vapo rub on my feet then socks on as I sleep
-hot shower
-hot soup or broth

Rarely get sick and if I do it's 2-3 days instead of a week.

I used Wholly tea by dr. Miller when I noticed I had the flu and it cleared it the same day.

I only used it once for the flu though. It's a very strong tea.

Codeine syrup for the cough (my dr. usually gives me cheratussin ac which is the worst kind but is better than OTC,) adderall to get through the day at work with at least some energy, weed for a mood lift.
