I'm assuming that's supposed to demonstrate the superiority of one over the other, but I don't see it. Both views have their own merits.

It can be hard to see the superiority of one view over the other because the quietist and fatalistic view is fundamentally grounded in the unspoken but taken-for-granted assumption that some things can never change. And as long as the human being is basically the same creature as it's always been, it is possible to hold on to the idea that all the vast progress that we have made is superficial, and the deeper realities of the human heart and soul remain the same.

However, this idea is presently to come into direct conflict with reality as the possibility of germline intervention makes clear that no aspect of the world, including the very makeup of what the human being is, will forever resist our inexorable advance in understanding and reshaping the material world that surrounds us.

The old nostrums and the old ideas that there is nothing new under the Sun are being mooted and will one day be decisively mooted by rude new facts that will render them null and void.

I actually feel really sorry for this sorry excuse for a man.

i bet he is a product of an overbearing single parent household(single mother no doubt) who feeds him as her way of expressing true affection towards him and also uses it as a control mechanism to keep him at home (as no woman other than her could ever love a lard ass like him)

Call me beta, a pussy, whatever, seeing this does upset me. I'd genuinely want to help this guy if I could. He's still young and can turn things around. I understand that life's not fair and that you need to accept that to get anywhere, but deep down it still bothers me just how unfair it can be. I look at a guy like him and realize he's been given a shitty hand in the game of life, much not of his own doing. I hope he turns it around and can extract some happiness out of the little time we all have on this planet.

It sucks to in a position like his, without any motivation or hope.

Then again, he's the one not trying to do anything. He could go back and get a GED. He could try to get fit, not exercising but rather juicing and not eating bread. He just needs a spark to get his stuff in order.
