I have been thinking how my personal life seeps into the work place. I work in a smallish, corporate office. I usually get to work and do what I need to do and get out. There have been some moments where I am thinking fuck these drones and let me keep it real, particularly when I hear nonsense/pettiness/stupidity from the co-workers. That's when I'm reminded of:

I know I'll be leaving this job/company by September so I am just try to get by without getting too vested in the day to day.

How are you at work? Alpha? What's the best way to act till I'm ready to leave?

Stay professional & stay classy. I myself am working an exit strategy that will be completed by the end of the year.

When I do have to go in, our office is casual. I try to be professional a notch above others and not engage in their pettiness. I don't care about sports, and I don't care how broke you are while you drink star bucks. But I'm not a jerk towards everyone. But the men in the office know whose on point, and my boss is trying to keep me around.

However, it might depend on the level of interaction required of you. With my work all of it is assignment in my inbox. So my interaction is relegated to pleasantries most of the day, and that's where I like it to be. It's work, not high school

Solid advice. I have the same situation with the assignments being in my inbox and I only get to interact on a pleasantry level/meetings. It's during the meetings when I see these cretins in action.

I get treated really well by my boss, been getting raises, an assistant etc. so I can't complain on that front. Just surprises me that these wankers are so hung up on titles, SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) when I'm banging fine women, stacking $$s, and working on leaving the dronish (corporate) lifestyle altogether.

Gotta stay classy, but if you're working as part of a team it's hard not to get sucked in or feel a "regressive pull" of the non-sense going on around you. Sometimes you have to fit in, but I distance myself and try not to engage them. I am a team player though and show it at all times.

That said, working sucks. I don't doubt for a minute that if I were independently wealthy I could fill my free time with interesting books, travel, hobbies and friends.

Until that time comes though… stay above the fray.

I have taken both approaches to the work environment as an employee. As a young man I would tell people exactly what I thought of them leading to 2 near fist fights and me eventually getting fired...that is not the way to roll as an employee. As a later employee I had to consciously make it look like I cared/was part of the team while also getting my shit done. I had a pattern that was to ask one question and then move on. Like if someone was seeking pity like "oh I am so...tired today' I would indulge them with "really? why?" let them say whatever and then shut my mouth and move on. Or if someone said "oh man, did you see that football game yesterday?" I'd reply with "no, I missed it, how was it?"

It was just enough to make it seem like I cared without volunteering any of my own life...which is the point anyway, people don't want to hear about you they want you to validate them.

Now I work for myself, I still use the same pattern but now also have the escape option of "sorry to cut you off but I've got another appointment coming up in 15 min"

I've always been an outcast when I come in to a new place because I have a lot of pride in what I do and I demand respect. Middle of the road dude hate me at first, but my superiors and subordinates love me. Some of the middle of the road dudes loosen up once they get comfortable with me, but most continue to hate. I can't count the amount of guys who have told me they hated me until they realized I wasn't a complete asshole.

I just don't play games, especially when I come in. I figure out who the good ones are right off the bat, then ignore and take no shit from the wannabes. It's fun to come in and steamroll people, I won't lie. I like to develop the younger guys too, especially the few who are promising. My superiors usually take a similar interest in me as well.

I use quiet intensity most of the time, but I am always 5 steps away from snapping on someone and I don't hesitate to do so if the situation warrants it, which isn't often. Most problems can be solved by pulling people aside and being tactful.

Make your $$$$ and plan to open your own business.

1) Keep your eyes on the goal
2) Any time you feel like you are about to lose control ask, "How does this help me with my goal? Or my network."
2a) If the answer is that it only makes your ego feel better - don't do it. The ego is man's worse enemy, well not necessarily worse - but your ego will make you do stupid shit
3) Fucking up your last 6 months may hurt your reputation
4) Fucking up or being an ass - MAY GET YOU FIRED - before you are ready to bolt - that would fuck up your plan
5) Keeping your frame and staying in control will allow you to stay longer if you miss your September deadline
6) Strategically, no value in messing around at work - being an ass would just be for your ego, to feed your male hamster, and to pretend like you are having that internal monologue from fight club. It is ok to have that internal conversation - don't act on it.

I have overlapped and repeated points to emphasize don't fuck up the situation.

Your final victory will be when you speak with your co-workers a year down the road, or bump into them and they find out how well you are doing now that you are free and you are the boss. That is lasting victory.

Also, and I know compassion is rarely emphasized on this forum, but these people are struggling (I know I sound judgemental), and this is how they cope with their shit lives. Don't feel anger toward them and don't feel pity for them. Go for indifference. Smile at them with the attitude of, "I know how shitty your life is." They'll interpret it as you just being nice.

Yep, the most "alpha" approach to work is to create your own job and run ship.

Keep your head down for now and focus on making that happen. Unless your boss or a co-worker is blatantly disrespecting you, there's no need to give the subject much brainpower. Especially if you're only in for 6 more months.

I've been walking that fine line for years now. I gotta admit, it wears thin sometimes, but that's when I'd rather come out for the Brain Trust's (RVF) opinion rather than mess things up at work.

I appreciate the responses --they give me the direction I need when I am about to speak my mind at the most inopportune time.
