Hey Man - to cop out here a little bit, I have to admit that it's been a long time since I've read this, so I may not have much insight to add right now. I read it in intro philosophy just over 10 years ago and found it pretty life-changing at the time, but then again, that was quite a different period of my life than the one I'm in now.

I do remember it being pretty slow to get off the ground on the first read, but if you're already 3/4 of the way through, that's not very promising. LOL

Could be it's just not for everyone -the guy's writing style and thought processes probably wouldn't vibe with a lot of people.

But I'd like to go give it another read before I back up my recommendation with any further comment.

The Gregory Hays translation is good. It's more colloquial and actually sounds like something a dude would write in his journal.

These are basically about the same thing. You are not your thoughts, emotions or your past. Not just knowing that everything happens though a subjective reality but actually feeling it. The only thing in this world you can truly control is how you interpret your past, situations, other people and yourself. You can anytime change the meaning of the past. Understanding that you are freaking powerful and it is your self-limiting beliefs which are holding you back.

If you would like to really get to "know thy self" go and do the Landmark Curriculum for living. Spend a year around Landmark. It will be the most valuable year of your life if you can afford the time.

There is no experience in the world like a year around Landmark Education.

By 25 I was completely cured of my arrogance about my ignorance because I was a step-father to Jennifers two children. And there is nothing that tells you that you are out of your depth and have no idea what you are doing than getting an "instant family" at the age of 23 and noticing how far out of your depth you are.

There is a very long list of books I have read over my life. But they all pale into comparison with the experience of doing the Landmark Curriculum for living and staying in tune with that work for the remainder of your life. I have persuaded many a young man to do those classes. Every one of them has thanked me profusely for being willing to persuade them to do it.

I am sure this will bring some hate, but if you live in America specifically, read the bible, start to finish. Even if you don't believe it the insights into american culture is like watching Arrested Development and finally understanding what the jokes are all about.

I agree with the Landmark comment, there are other similar programs out there under different names (LifeSpring, World Works, etc).
I attended this program, it completely changed my life and many others I know as well. Some label it as a cult and some people get completely lost/addicted to the group. I know a few people who were broke, unemployed (with no plans on finding a job) but still staffing the events for free. That being said I think everyone should attend an event like this. No books can substitute the group experience you get from this event. When I attended this event a very large successful company was sending its top employees to the event (multi-billion dollar real estate company).
