RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I hear ya Gio. Thanks for the tip. A random comment, my trainer when we do defensive work (I put on headgear etc) and he punches at me when he sticks out his jab arm and starts circling it to distract me. Fucking hate it. Because he'll either pound me with the right when I am distracted or he will step in with a stiff arm like you mentioned. Short of like a jouster and his pole. Hate that shit. I already have numerous thoughts running through my head to then have him clown me like that. Lol.

It's difficult to find channels that breakdown strategy and technique well. It's something I'd like to do myself if I had the time. That said, these are hands down the best two videos I've ever come across when it comes to breaking down top level fighters and understanding what they are doing. It's a massive shame that this guy only made these two, as he knows his stuff.

Thanks mate, have added them to my watch list.

I'm likely too green to understand much at that level now though.

You're never too green to start picking things up. Personally I think analysing fight footage is an important part of any amateur fighter's development. There will be things you're focusing on now (without knowing where in your boxing career you are) that will be helped by studying these videos. Try to work something into your sparring and shadow boxing.

2x boxing technique classes and 2x boxing conditioning classes on top of 4x weekly powerlifting sessions (some days I do both).

You'll be fine. Just remember to eat, sleep and stretch.

I regularly do an hours run, an hour or so in the gym and an hour + kickboxing. In the same day.

I'd be careful with boxing conditioning classes, depending on what they are. There are probably more productive ways to spend your time in the gym as a beginner. Skipping those classes and training like I saw the actual fighters training made a huge difference for me.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
The conditioning classes are just basically mitt work with a partner doing some combos at the core, and some of the usual bodyweight conditioning exercises in between.

The cool kids told me today I should join them for sparring next week. Can't wait!

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I have been hitting the gym 6x a week plus 2x kickboxing sessions during the last month. Going to the gym at 5am every morning and kickboxing is at 7pm.
If I'm not busy I also going to MMA sparring on Saturdays.

Things are going pretty good. I just need to make sure to not train my legs heavily the day before a kickboxing session.

I like this combination.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
So I went to my first Golden Gloves event last night.

I didn't fight, just went to support some of the guys.

The novice bouts are 1 min each round.

These guys who were warming up, looked tight great technique, smooth with the mitts etc.

Once they got in the ring it was a street fight, technique went out the door. Lot of grabbing and mugging and head pulling.

It was pure chaos.

Here is some footage. https://somevid.com/P0rO86xk6qtLlKGpYkWv

On a side note, I was in the back helping one of the guys get ready and just chatting and this one guy was mad dogging (I think that is what the kids call it) me. I have no idea over what, whatever. I met another real nice kid, not from our gym. And the mad dogger (blue corner) and this kid (red corner) fought an and the kid won. I was pretty stoked. The mad dogger was dancing and trying to be all flashy, the kid had to gain weight was a bit chubby, but well trained and disciplined. He had pretty good defense and thumped the punk a few times. Just shows be humble and work hard, no need to be all flashy.

Side question: Most of you guys use wraps I imagine. Anyone go to the next level and do that gauze and tape thing? Or is that mainly for fights?

Thanks.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
First sparring session was awesome, I learned more than pretty much all the previous training sessions combined. I just did the basic jabs and crosses, nothing else. One of the fight team guys showed me some footwork tips which I'll be practicing daily. It's simply pushing with the opposite leg to the direction you're going, which suddenly makes me move a lot smoother and faster.

Then we all lined up to punch the birthday boy in the abs, one punch per year.

Yes, I when I was competing I used it to protect vulnerable parts of the hand, and add support. For example, I would recommend anyone who is sparring should wrap their thumbs with additional tape, duct tape if you like. It is very easy to pick up injuries from sparring that will mess with your ability to compete. I speak as someone who has sustained their fair share over the years. Protect your hands in sparring, get there 5 minutes earlier if needs be and add extra protection.

Interesting, I do see guys doing that at the gym. Some seem to do it place of wraps. I am going to have to try it out some time. I do use gel padding for the top of my knuckles. When I got them, life got better. Big Grin

Different question please. I am struggling with endurance a bit when doing mitts. Once I get to round 5 or so. I am no carbs but maybe I am just not training my shoulder endurance enough - that is what is driving my poor form in later rounds. My shoulders get tired. It might also be the heavy weightlifting. I do MWF weights, TTS boxing.

Speed bag the best way to give the shoulders endurance? I really noticed it today and forgot to ask my trainer. But I know there is a ton of wisdom here. As usual, any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldn't personally advocate it instead of wraps, but I would advocate extra strapping in sparring - avoid injuries outside of competition.

With regards to endurance, there are a couple of things:

Mitts are quite demanding, and a good trainer will push you hard and effectively with them.

I would say no carb is a tremendously poor decision for someone training hard. If performance is your goal, carbs are essential, unless you are a genetic mutant and assisted. Even then, carbs are a huge benefit, I would not allow any one I coached to go low carb, as performance is bound to suffer.

You also sound from your question as though you are relatively new to the sport. It is a fact that there is a long adaption period. Until you learn to relax with your punches, and throw instinctively when the pads are offered to you, you will tend to tense up when your trainer calls the punches, and you're forced to think and be deliberate.

To summarise, it's partly a matter of experience, partly a function of your diet apparently being deliberately suboptimal, and partly a fact that a decent trainer can always make time on the mitts suck, particularly as a newbie, when he is still pushing you to improve your conditioning and forcing you to throw the same punches and combinations over and over again. As you improve, and if you go on to compete, your coach is likely to start using the pads less as an additional conditioning tool, and more as a tool for refining technique. It will still be knackering though.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I have been at it for about 8 months now-first few months I was doing 20 hours a week - some was just watching others etc. I have cut back recently to get some weights back into my workout. When I wasn't messing with my carbs I had done 10 rounds of mitts before with pretty decent performance. I will admit no carbs may not be ideal but I am trying to cut some weight. I have also gone back to lifting heavy which is also wearing the muscles a bit. Last Saturday I had the most magical (I know I sound like a girl) 6 rounds of mitts ever. I rarely say I do anything well, but man I was on top of it.

I really thought this week was gonna be the next level but NOPE.

Ah, in which case, I wouldn't sweat it too much, if you're not peaking for competition then you have to accept a degree of ebb and flow.

As you say, fat loss is a priority, so you can't be surprised if performance suffers. It's pretty much inevitable.

Not as much as I used to. When I had that great six rounds last week I felt like I was really balanced between power and technique. I was relaxed and loose.

I even made up an acronym to help me remember the important stuff and power isn't one of them. I know there are lots of things to remember but this helps me remember my technique and takes my focus of off killing stuff.

STAB

Stance
Turn the wrists
Aim
Balance

Another version is BATES everything is the same but the E stands for efficient. Slip enough just to get by. Roll just enough. Rather than clearing by way too much space. More space, more energy used and probably worse position and more time for the guy to react to my counter coming out of the defensive move.

Maybe need to add relaxed to my acronym.

I know I am crazy. I made fucking acronyms. But I love it. Just sent off my mouth guard, I have been sitting on the molding kit for months. But I am getting ready to spar again. But I have a better handle on what is supposed to happen so that is gonna be fun.

^^^ That's cool.

A lot of guys just hit everything as hard as they can for years without realising that boxing doesn't work that way Big Grin

Then they get in the ring and wonder why they're gassed after 2 rounds!

(01-18-2015 06:22 AM)CrashBangWallop Wrote:  I agree with the last few posts.

Lighter gloves are preferable for bag work; the heavier gloves are too physically big and heavy for accurate bag work in my opinion. Nobody really uses them anymore, but actual "bag gloves" are very light.

Also, for your average guy starting out, 16oz can be very heavy.

Re: Kieran's point about sparring with 16s if you aren't going to fight in them;you can pretty much completely hide your head behind a pair of 16s; it can then be a big shock to step into the ring with 10s and find your guard is half the size you are used to!

As for the Thais; well, yeah they're crazy. Although they may have been right all along about head gear...it's an argument that isn't going to go away for the foreseeable I don't think.
I saw a guy doing mitts today with 8 oz gloves. I was wondering what your take on this would be. I need to speak to my trainer if he would be cool with it. But I see smaller gloves would force me to improve my aim - sometimes with all the movement I don't always place on center but catch a piece due to size of 16 oz gloves.

I wouldn't do bag work with this and nor would I try and bang the shit out of the mitts given the less padding.

Anyone ever do this? 8 or 10s? I also wonder if my hand can fit in them comfortably.

Thanks so much.

Edit: Also, anyone ever see a complete 123 combo is a boxing match? Meaning all 3 hit? I was searching youtube but not coming up with much. I think most experienced boxers are looking out for that sort of stuff. The most basic combo taught, right?

Edit: Man body shots can really hurt. For sparring purposes the belt covers the liver right? At 5:39 you can hear how hard he bangs the guy in the body. Ouch.

Another one. There are some duplicates in this one. But there are more angles of the same shot.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Jeez, I felt that Roy Jones right hand at 4.28 in the second video!

That shot from Gerry Penalosa in the first video at 2.38 was absolutely textbook.

The Hopkins De la Hoya left hook is an absolute classic - remember watching that fight. He doesn't even have his feet really set, shows it doesn't take much if it's well placed.

I watched the Mayweather Judah fight again recently after hearing the sparring rumours. Mayweather's body punching in that fight was amazing; slowed Zab down and made a huge difference (Mike McCallum was probably the best for this; used to steal body shots and let the damage accumulate - one of the most underrated ever).

On the gloves, I always use 10s or at the most 12s for pad-work as I don't want the mechanics and timing to be thrown off by heavy gloves. As long as you don't use bag gloves, and aren't too heavy, the trainer's hands should be fine.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
^^ sound advice. Generally I see people using them to improve speed, but personally I prefer people to wear the gloves they are going to compete with, or heavier. If you are able to throw fast, accurate, well-timed punches for 10 rounds with 16oz gloves, 3 rounds with 10oz gloves in competition is going to seem easy by comparison.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
If you are going to be standard boxing, don't use 8oz gloves. 8oz are for young men, San Shou, some Muay Thai kids, Korean/American/ kickboxing/Kenpo/TKD/Wing Chun/Hapkido stuff. Like the other's said. Use the same sizes you will actually compete with.

If you want to improve your targeting, have your trainer move and you give chase. He needs to switch back and forth between upper and lower (body shot) mitt locations and use his own quick footwork to be evasive. In conjunction with common combinations you can throw. This forces you to learn how to hit accurately without swinging too hard, so that you do not hyperextend your arms. By forcing you to concentrate harder, your accuracy will improve overall.

Every fighter should do focus mitts drills like this twice a week. I made all my guys do it. Especially the high level BJJ guys with shitty standup. If they were going to ever throw a punch at anyone, it could at least be on target.
