Over 75 free shipping. Just a heads up.

I searched for a coupon and this code came up on retailmenot.com FALL20

I added it to my order and it worked and it still kept free shipping. It knocks off 20% and I didn't get charged tax. The tax thing may be different for everyone though by state. Saved me 20 bucks. Just a heads up.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I got 16 oz. Reyes training gloves and their Protector II Headgear on Fightgear.com last year for $100 and $80 respectively. That was by far the best deal I've ever seen. The gloves are now $130 (still cheapest I can find on the net) and the headgear is $170, but it's worth checking out every so often.

Talking about gear, does anyone own a Datsusara gear bag? I'm looking into buying one.

Also, any ammy boxers here in the Ohio area?

Puts on a jump rope clinic. At one point his leg goes over an arm and he jumps. No stopping. Starts around 30 sec mark.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Minor update and want to share a video. Since my first sparring event, I haven't sparred since for a variety of reasons. I do work with other people but not actual sparring, we do body work (just punching partner's torso), movement, or like the other day, I sort of held my defensive pose while someone tried to figure out where to throw punches. Still learning and growing and improving conditioning. I am putting in about 20 hours a week.

Can't get enough of it!

Just tried it, damn, harder than I expected. I'm going to master it though as they'll love that one at my gym.

20 hours a week with no sparring? I can't even imagine what you're doing to fill out that amount of time. Are you happy with it? Not getting frustrated/bored? I know I'd be getting pissed at them holding me back.

Even in the lead up to a fight I "only" put in 12 -18 hours a week, a third of which would be sparring.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Between cardio, heavy bag, double end, speed bag and mitts it adds up. Plus coaching, everyday someone is generously giving me a few minutes of time to correct something. Also, I do watch sparring, my gym has pros come through and the place gets packed. About 25% of my time is just cardio (jumprope and treadmill).

I also do about 20 rounds a week of defense where a pro/trainer boxes me but all I can do is defend (no jabbing or anything on my part - I have headgear and mouthguard). I am really try to work on my defensive abilities. My first experience left an impression on me, I'd like to be able to protect myself. I do a lot of shadow boxing, etc. Keep in my mind I have been at it only a few months and have never done this before so everything can be improved.

My endurance has gotten a ton better. So far the longest I have gone is 6 rounds of just on my toes defensive boxing. My trainer doesn't give me a break so I know I need to keep making sure my cardio is good. I am finally comfortable enough (we will see when I spar) with not grabbing for punches so I don't get fake jab hooked. Today, stopped using the glove to catch punches and just tried to trust myself to slip punches. I have been slipping (trying to) from the start, but today was a much more conscious effort. My biggest thing is not trying to move until the punch comes, sometimes I do move too early. He does hit me, not at max power, but I know when I did something wrong, that is for sure.

There are also days when I just throw jabs for 5 rounds, plus the other stuff. I am surprised how quickly time passes while I am there. But like I said, I knew nothing when I started, so there is plenty to work on. I go 6 days a week.

Not bored yet, I don't think I will ever be. Today I was thinking of something I heard, I don't remember where I heard it, something about inside of you is a storm. For me I have always been pretty controlled on the outside, but I have a lot of aggression in me which I control and I feel like I found a place where I can express it. Having said that, I do find a weird peace when I am there. From the sound of the speed bag, or just being so focused, everything else just disappears.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I am looking to boost speed and power. Came across this video (I know it says MMA but I think it would be applicable).

For those who have boosted your speed and power did you use these techniques? Or would you recommend something else? Something that I could do at home without boxing equipment would be great.

Also, I am guessing the heavier the weight the better? I am thinking of maybe grabbing 2lb dumb bells. Originally, I was going to grab a pair of 1 and 2 lb but just checked prices, pricier than I thought they would be. Thanks!

Try shadowboxing with 2lb dumbell... this is really hard ! Also try to not pop your punches cause you can mess your elbows...

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
ditch the exercises with the dumbbells. it'll screw with your technique.

perfect punching mechanics is the most important thing in developing speed and power. you work on this at the boxing gym with your trainer shadowboxing, on the bags, mitts, etc...

but outside of the boxing gym, lift heavy weights for reps lower than 5. compound movements. squat, deadlift, press, benchpress. this will tax your central nervous system and will cause more myelination (this means that the signals your brain sends to your muscles will be traveled faster). don't lift weights in the hypertrophy range, meaning stay under repetitions of 5. once you start lifting in the 6-15 range, you're causing your muscles to grow bigger which will slow you down.

^ Agreed.

Also, speed and power aren't all that trainable anyway, whereas timing and accuracy on the other hand are, and are far more important anyway.

I did use those techniques, they did help a little.

I have tried many other things to boost speed and power..

- lose fat + gain muscle

- improve punching technique

- improve foot work

- improve stamina

- improve breathing patterns

- improve relaxation levels in the ring

- improve core strength

- improve leg strength

- Olympic style weight training

- shadow boxing in water

- yoga/stretching

***

For me, what worked the best was to improve my stamina.

If my stamina was awesome, I could punch as hard and as fast as possible 100% of the time.

Once we get tired, our speed and power start to suffer.

If I am not tired, I can throw punches with full force.

Stamina is #1, for me.

Gio, any special tips on how to improve stamina? I definitely agree with this.

As much as I work on my jump shot (basketball), it falls apart as I get tired. Increased stamina will help with that.

Have you ever tried pre-exhausting yourself before picking up the basketball.

An old kickboxing coach I know used to swear by this method for simulating the dying embers of a fight.

I still do it with my fighters although I have no idea whether it actually works or not and if so, why.

We did this is the military so simulate combat as well. We called it a "Stress Shoot". You essentially do a bunch of pushup/situps/run/forced march, all in full combatgear to exhaust yourself. You then step onto a firing range without being given time to recover and do whatever shooting drill (standard mid-range pop ups, long range free standing, close quarters, etc).

I don't know how well it actually improves accuracy, but it gives you a much better idea of how your body reacts and how your aim breaks down when you are stressed. So in theory, you should shoot better when tired.

I'm sure it will work for any type of sport.

I really like doing this. Long heavy bag sessions once you're already tired. I stop focusing on perfect technique and just really focus on a couple things: returning my hands to my chin after I punch, trying to keep my punches relatively tight and not wing my shots. Other than that, I just try to exhaust myself. Then some sparring or mitt work.

For basketball it might be interesting to look into techniques biathlon athletes use to shoot accurately with elevated heart rates.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
(12-15-2014 12:50 AM)redbeard Wrote:  Gio, any special tips on how to improve stamina?

My favorite way to improve stamina is to run hill sprints at the beach.

Other than that..

For boxing: Boxing stamina often comes down to just sheer will and effort. Throw more punches in every round, feint more, move more, jab more. Throw with more power.

Have someone count the number of punches you throw per round. Come up with an average number for punches per round. The next week, increase this number. Gradually, increase the number of punches you throw!

Maybe, try one of these, some people like it:

[Image: images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQVwh6xkuLeoKHEkl_LI84...5Bm6RyFfTg]

For your Jump shot: Play more defense. The best way to get in shape for offense is to play more defense. Also, when you practice your jumper, pre-exhaust yourself as CrashBangWallop and AntiTrace describe.

Before doing shooting drills, sprint up and down the court, then, shoot 5 jumpers. Repeat.

Don't just shoot when you are fresh, it's better to shoot when you are tired. After a game, etc,

Also, during games, if you are tired, don't shoot long jumpers, get a lay up, pass the ball, set a screen, get an easier shot, etc.

Basketball and boxing actually complement each other really well.

I mean do not push it too much at the end of the extension of your arm, cause that 2lbs can mess up your elbow.

For stamina, running is the best. You can mix it up with intermittent running. This will simulate the pace of the fight because you're not always punching like a crazy.

And I also have the elevation training mask that simulate oxygen in high altitude. If you want to kick your ass, this thing will do the job. Whip

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
first day back in the boxing grind since my injuries. 2 months outta the game. It kicked my ass. I can already feel my calves getting sore, I'm tired as hell and just want to goto bed about 2 hours earlier than normal.

Im not sparring yet, because Im still nursing the injuries and don't want a mistake to cost some more months. But damn, Im beat.

I did go pick up some hand wraps, and got some titles gloves on the way. Also picked up my own jump rope because its hard finding a good one at the gym. Theyre either too short or too long.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I don't want to derail this thread...but have we had a "which jump rope is best" discussion?

I've been jumping rope pretty consistently....even on lifting days I'll do 10 minutes as a warmup.

I have this one:

Valeo Deluxe Speed Rope, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007IS6ZG/ref...Lub1J7XZQS

But I think I broke one of the bearings. They have become louder and get tangled much easier when doing cross cross.

I'm debating getting a new one but don't know if it's worth it to get one of these $25 geek crossfit ones.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I picked this up for my jump rope, mainly because I knew I needed one and it was there in the store. http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/i...&view=grid

So far it's good, but I've only used it twice. Easy to adjust the length and you can get some good speed. I would go with the $7 ones, you could get 4 for just about the price of the one I got, and I doubt the quality is 4x better
