14-16oz but must have plenty of high quality padding price range $100-$150

If I were gonna spend that much money, I would buy a pair of 16 oz sparring gloves and a lighter pair of training gloves for bag and pad work (you can see earlier in this thread some experienced guys advocating using smaller gloves for the speed and timing reasons).

I'm partial to Title for cheap to mid range stuff. Just make sure you get 16s, lots of guys won't spar with you in anything smaller. Both the Classic and Platinum lines seem good enough quality for the price. I highly recommend their Mexican style handwraps too.

I can afford to drop $200 and get two pairs. I already have 16oz Everlast gloves but the padding has been worn away from heavy bag work and I don't like how they fit round my hand. I want some better equipment. I also have 10oz bag gloves but they are also pretty worn.

I've been looking at some Ringside gloves 16oz sparring for $100. I've used Title before, I like them, I'll have a look around. I will check out these Mexican handwraps too. I seem to hear lots of good things about anything 'Mexican style'.

Anything you can recommend for a lighter bag glove? Also is 10oz too light? Would 12oz be better? Again I need something with the best hand protection possible as I have broken my right hand before and would prefer to minimise the chances that I break it again although I know there is always the risk.

Title has sales from time to time. Just search for it. I have seen free shipping or even 20% off. Below is just one sample link.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
If you can pick them up on sale, Cleto Reyes are the best gloves around, though I've never been able to afford a pair myself. I have been punched in the face by numerous pairs though, so I feel somewhat qualified to comment. I've sparred once or twice in pairs I've borrowed and they are great. Failing that, good quality Title gloves are hard to beat. Title make quality products, and they are extremely durable. Everlast not so much in my experience.

I don't mind spending big on Cleto Reyes if they are truly as good as people say they are. I plan to be in this for a while so I'm fine with laying down same cash for a product of the highest quality.

What would you say makes them so good compared to a lower tier glove? Fit? Padding? Durability?

I import $10 gloves of which I sell 1000s each year and they are as good as gloves 10 times the cost for 99% of people, 99% of the time.

They are made at the same factory, off the same mould as a household brand of gloves that retail for $100+.

I think it depends. Personally I wouldn't spend that much money on a pair of gloves under any circumstances. My comment above that I 'couldn't afford' them is really along the lines of what CBW is saying - basically that I couldn't justify spending that much on a top pair of gloves when for £35 I could get some that were largely as good. I do think, anecdotally, that Cleto Reyes are the best gloves you can get. They feel fantastic, they last forever, and from my limited experience of wearing them, I think they do a superior job of protecting your hands and wrists - I felt better able to make a tight fist in them.

I would still personally buy £35 Title gloves though, and have £150 in the bank.

Mexican wraps are the only wraps anyone should use for boxing, imo. Once I switched to them my hands felt a lot better. Pepper Roach has the best handwrapping video on youtube.

The other thing to bare in mind...and this shouldn't be the case, but it is...if you rock up to any gym, anywhere in the World with CR gloves and aren't really, really good, you're gonna get a) a beatdown in sparring and b) people thinking you're a Flash Harry.

Just something to consider.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Thank you both for your insight.

I never realised that 'Mexican style handwraps' are just elasticated ones. I already have those and I agree I would never go back to using old style.

I totally get your point about the CR's, CBW. I should have really thought of that. It would be like somebody rocking up at one of my scrimmages in a £200 Jordan shoe. I appreciate you mentioning it.

I forgot to mention I have a hook up at one of the UKs biggest boxing suppliers so I will be able to pick most of this stuff at just a little more than cost.

I'll get some Titles or Ringside whichever I can get the best deal on.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
You should really get a different glove to do pad / bag work in to the sparring one as you will cut your sparring partners if you get any wear on tehm, and the padding will get squashed down which will hurt your sparring partners more than usual.

On brands, one of my favourite mid range gloves out of the ones I've used is the Green Hill tiger.

I had to google Flash Harry to see what it even meant, but I now like the term.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Is there any decent brand other than Title for cheap-mid range bag gloves? I can't find Title in Australia. Cheap ones I can find online here are Everlast, Ringside, Adidas, Sting and SMAI.

Also, I should be getting a 12oz pair, right?

At the moment I have a 16oz+ Hayabusha pair for sparring (I bought whatever was recommended at the shop when I started) and use random club gloves from the box for bag work.

Thanks Smile

I've always used 10oz Adidas on the bag, the pair I have now is at least 3 years old and has held up fine.

Personally I think boxers would be better off using MMA gloves on the heavy bag, or other thinly padded gloves with limited wrist support (like the old school bag gloves). I think one of the big problems with conventional boxing gloves is that, because they offer tremendous padding and support for the entire hand and wrist, you don't get enough feedback on whether you are punching with bad mechanics or not, particularly as with rounded gloves on a rounded bag, there can be a slight slipping effect on contact. Slight misalignment on contact can go unnoticed for years, until suddenly you have lifelong problems. Switching to MMA gloves made a big difference to the health of my joints and gave me important feedback on my technique, which also translated to considerable power improvements in the ring. Very tiny changes can have a huge effect, and the heavy bag is your lab for working out what slight adjustments might do for the effectiveness of your punches. To me it makes sense to wear something that gives you as much feedback as possible.

It's funny you mention Bag Gloves.

I can't remember the last time I saw someone wearing any now I think about it.

I think one sniff of the average bag glove as provided by your typical gym would be instructive as to why not. I'm still trying to scrub the stink off my hands and it must be two years since I wore any glove other than my own!

Do you mean you want to buy a shipment? I can give you the name of the factory (they're in Pakistan and frankly a nightmare to deal with...who'd have thought?) if you like.

Oh, I actually meant I wanted to purchase a cheap pair of gloves for personal use. Can I find these online?

Edit: Actually, the factory name would be fine too. I just really want to see these gloves. The 99%/99% for 10x less cost part really impresses me.

To be honest I don't think the factory will sell you 1 pair mate. It'd be impossible to know who sells them on ebay (I'm sure loads do!) as they will be branded according to customer spec. Who knows what they would charge either, certainly not the import price I mentioned earlier.

Mine are branded with the name of my business and we only sell internally to our own students, not on eBay etc.

What I can do for you is get a non-branded pair sent with the next shipment and pop them in the post for you if you'd like?

Thanks for the info Crash, this certainly isn't my area of expertise. Don't worry about it, I couldn't allow myself to trouble you with something like this. I'm going to do some research and get a cheap pair around here.

Try and get their traditional leather glove.

A relative of mine, who obviously doesn't listen to a single word ever said about what I do for a living other than "martial arts", bought me a pair of Adidas Climacool gloves last Christmas.

They feel horrible.

Technology for technology's sake. Haven't worn them for training once.

If anyone's reading this and interested in the same question for Muay Thai, rather than Western boxing/kickboxing I have a pair of leather Twins gloves that have lasted 5 years of annual Thailand-camp abuse. They'll need replacing this year as the seams have gone and the padding is wrecked but they've held up magnificently.

There's not much sport specific stuff you need to do as a beginner to strength training. Do your standard squats, presses, deadlifts and pulls to increase your overall strength for BJJ. Doing extra grip work would probably benefit you a lot.
