You normally don't pick a jet on price as much on mission. Does it handle high and hot airports (Denver in the summer). Does it hold enough passengers for your normal trips. Does it have the range you need. Is it easy to maintain and have little scheduled downtime.

Telling yourself what you are going to own is literally one of the best ways to make it happen. Read Think and Grow Rich. Listen to Elliot Hulse. He was flat out broke and he told himself everyday the life he was going to have in a couple of years. And now he has exactly the same life with almost a million youtube subscribers.

This has been my experience in life. That said I really want to encourage the OP. CaliforniaSupreme, if you're still in high school and already thinking this way that says quite a bit about where you're going. BTW, I know a doctor that invented a medical device. I invested heavily in his company because you could tell he was always the smartest person in the room. His company was bought out for a large sum and I received a 4x return on my investment. He is a great doctor and a better CEO.

WestCoast, I'll put something together and post it. I've done some mentoring of small business entrepreneurs.

I think you'd be better off just buying a plane unless you get to the point where you make so much it no longer matters and it's just a blip on the radar. The reality is even though this forum is geared towards a bachelor lifestyle by the time you have accumulated enough wealth to purchase a jet it's very likely you'll be married with or without children and your priorities will change.

It's like the thousands of guys who dream about owning a Ferrari. These guys probably are the types who buy one before they should. I.e. a guy has a million and goes and buys a 458 Italia. Whereas the truly wealthy are people who wait until they make the really big purchases and just continually make purchases that to them are just a blip.

I'm sure Gringuito probably didn't have the jet when he was worth 5 or 10 million. Perhaps he could've afforded to purchase it and maintain it at that point but it wouldn't have been wise.

I know Dentists, Doctors, Small Business Owners and Lawyers whom own planes. I don't know anyone who owns a jet.

Personally I'd rather have a nice exotic. I don't think I'd ever reach the point where I could rationalize the spending on a jet. There would be so many other things I'd prefer to spend that type of money on.

Treadus - you are missing the point. He stated you need $100M to own a jet. Let's think about this. If you become, even a good doctor, and make $500K per year from the very beginning ($350K after taxes) and you save EVERY PENNY meaning you save $350K per year for life and on top of all of this you get a 10% annual return on your investment you won't have $100M until you are 65 years old.

It is one thing to say you want to be rich but this is like me saying I want $10M dollars and my plan is to work minimum wage for life. Simply not gonna happen and you're either mentally sick or can't do math... As you can see it means both.

@dvy your Invisalign example actually proves his point? They created a product/company.

No one is flying jets by starting a run of the mill doctors practice, you can get a few sticks in the bank but $3-5M versus $100M is not even in the same ball park.

Simply put? No one who owns a jet owns a jet because he wants to show off. They own jets because their time is so valuable that it is worth it. All this translated? You have to be of large value as a person to ever afford/need a jet.

OP, you're still in High School, you should be more focused on working out and hitting some pussy rather than thinking about a jet you could own in 20 years. Nothing wrong with ambition, it just depends on what is fuelling that ambition as to whether it is a positive or negative in your life.

I don't have Jet owner level cash but I do have a fair amount and I'd swap that in a second to be starting out again in high school.

Retiring with 1 million at 30 might not be the smartest move. You'd have to be highly leveraged in equities to be able to keep up with inflation. Its fine if you are completely willing to go back to the workforce at some point and you have a career that would allow this. But 1 million dollars while it may seem like a lot now, is hardly drop out of the rat race at 30 type of money. Remember, you'd need to be prepared to live till 90 and unless you are investing in equities your money would continue to buy less and less as inflation rose. During a correction your spending would have to be highly curbed. 1 million at 50 retiring is a lot different than 1 million at 30 in terms of retiring on it.

Maybe I'm completely off base here and plenty of people would be comfortable retiring with a million at 30. Personally for me to drop off I'd need about 3-5 times that amount.

Guessing he's doing CC --> transfer to good school (I hope) in order to save money. However, socially he will likely suffer for this; transfer students are most often second class citizens. That being said, he's light years ahead of 95% of his peers in even thinking about this. Hope it all works out but consider that "living in luxury" all depends where you will be living. California or Philippines as just one example...big difference in necessary resources. Also, "living in luxury" is relative...hell, I live in luxury compared to 95% of the world I'd wager. Luxury goods are largely positional...after a certain level of quality, the marginal benefit is minimal...it's all about hierarchy after that.

You could do, what I'd consider, fantastically well and be earning $1.2 million a year after taxes and that would only be enough to pay for the maintenance on a jet, it is truly only for extremely wealthy people.

Just remember, you will change your mind when you get more experiences. Part of being young is trying different stuff to find your identity.

When I was a young lad, I wanted to be an artist. I was a pretty good one and had attended art schools since I was a little pup. I even finished up a bachelor degree in art.

I ended up doing another degree in computers and business because I knew it would pay more and it came naturally to me. I found I was good a solving problems. I love art but not enough to be poor. A lot of my fellow art students got on my nerves and I could only imagine being around that type for the rest of my career.

I still use my art talent to this date. I just use it for product branding.

Besides, if I had made a career in art, I would have had to become a hipster and that was definitely not going to happen.
