Back to back golds for Bilideau. And a silver to a kid first timer.

Russia with a bronze. Lots of stoke all around the mountain today!!

yeah that was pretty impressive by the Canadians. They could have swept the medals really. Glad to see Russian get a skiing medal.

The Dutch are dominating in speed skating -- 1-2-3 again in the men's 500m - wow, just wow.

Loving watching all these winter sports.

another big day for the Norwegians...they are dominating the cross country events.

Can't believe that Shaun White did not even medal (!). 15-year old Japanese kid looked awesome and got the silver.

Is anyone getting fired up for the men's hockey? I'm pretty pumped up - it's going to be a real war. Stamkos is out of the Canadian lineup and they brought in Martin St. Louis which I am glad about as he was left out last go-around. I think it's going to be an amazing tournament.

Yep, Norway is killing it. The fitness of those guys is beyond comprehension. No wonder the Nazis had such a hard time keeping that place under control in the winters of WW2.

Canadian women killed the Slopstyle. Kim Lamarre (babe) had a run that left the event at no contest. It was that good. Canada with a bronze in that as well. I loved seeing the Sarah Burke tribute from those girls as well. *sniffle

Hockey is going to be amazing. Canada is a total wildcard this year and that means its going to be a rollercoaster! I love it when anything is possible.

How come I missed this thread. Several days of gloating down the drain!

In all fairness, the olympics are to heavy on the ski side.

Hockey only gives out one medal for many people winning many matches. Should be weighted differently.

Yeah Im stoked.

The safe money is on Canada. No other country has as many Gold medals, or medals in general.

For Russia, its Gold or nothing.

Those are the big dogs.

The USA is always a contender. They have too many silver medals to not be in the running for Gold.

Sweden? Finland? Czech?

If goaltenders could win games consistently, then yeah. But with an offense like Canada and Russia its going to be a shitkicker.

Yeah, this will be bloody interesting. I wouldn't bet on the US because they always seem to have problems to play together as a team even if they have great players.
Russia and Canada are probably the strongest ones but if their teamwork doesn't work like clockwork they can say goodbye in the quarters.

Sweden usually play good, if the Swedes fuck it up in the beginning of the tournament you can count to have them in the gold game.

Finland lost two of their main players so I wouldn't bet too much on them but they are a wildcard just as Switzerland can be.

Let the games begin...

RE: Sochi Winter Olympics 2014
Men's hockey starts TODAY!

Canada have to be the favorites, with Russia, the US and Sweden also quite strong and the Czechs and Fins with outside shots. I guess the Slovaks with Halak, Hossa and Chara are in the mix too, but Gaborik is out so that hurts (as does one of the Sedins being out for Sweden). It all depends on goaltending and how quickly the players can 'gel' and/or get used to the bigger ice surface if they are North Americans.

I'm in Prague and sorta pumped to see the Czech - Sweden game tonight. The winner of this group essentially gets to avoid the Canadians, Russians and US until the quarterfinals so that's pretty beneficial. I just think Sweden is too strong and Lundqvist is playing pretty well and that will be the difference.

It's tough to predict, but I see it going Sweden, Russia and Canada in the medals...the North Americans while powerful will have too much trouble adapting to being overseas, the bigger rinks and playing on Russian soil. There will definitely be some upsets early on -- the Slovaks have given the US trouble in the past and the Swiss have enough NHLers and a good goaltender too.

This is gonna be good!!

I know women suck at sport in general, but I didn't think they'd suck as much as they do at slopestyle snowboarding. They hardly even do any tricks - it's as if just getting to the bottom of the hill without stacking it is good enough for a medal. Since it's little more than twisting in the air, I would have thought they might be able do it nearly as well as a man. Guess I was wrong.

4-0 Sweden over the Czechs right now. Czechs def look slower and have been on their heels the whole game pretty much. They pulled their goalie after going down 3-0.

I knew Sweden would be tough and they are proving me right. Their defense is really tight and they have basically given the Czechs only 1 or 2 real chances. They also are really fast and with Lundqvist in goal they will be really difficult to beat I think. I think they will give Canada or the US a run of their money and can beat either team.

The Czechs have Jaormir Jagr, Patrik Elias and Peter Nedved playing shifts so no wonder they look a little slow out there...all those guys are either in their 40s or close to it!

Edit: 4-2 now Czechs came roaring back!

Yeah i noticed this aswell. I honestly think that any male can do better after 1 or 2 years of training, it was quite sad to watch really. All the men easily reached around 4 meters, some of these women couldn't even reach more then 2 meters.

Just finished watching Finland - Austria. 8-4. A lot of goals but I'm far from happy with Finlands effort. They definitely need to step it up before the game against Canada on Sunday.
Impressive this Grabner, 4 shots and 3 goals.

Later today will be Canada- Norway and Russia- Slovenia.
Gonna be very interesting to see what kind of show they will pull off.

Double digits?

7-1 US now in the 2nd... score a little worse than it looks but US look really fast and deadly and the Slovak defense look like they are asleep. Couple soft goals too - Slovak goalie Halak got pulled...

Selanne is injured for Finland, correct?

So many of the women at the Winter Olympics seem attractive (many have really good skin, a nice tan and white teeth i've noticed). I'm starting to think that spending a long time in cold, snowy, Winter conditions does a lot of good to your skin. I haven't watched much of the male events so I don't know if it has the same effect on them. If so, I'm off to somewhere cold and snowy!

Yeah they demolished Slovakia 7-1 but was that their best game? Russia struggled a little bit as did Canada but they eventually pulled away. Latvia, Slovenia and even Switzerland have impressed me so far given how tight many of the opening round games have been. The level of competition has evened out a lot and a hot goaltender can make a huge difference (or poor or so-so goaltending can kill you as in Slovakia's case versus the US). The US-Russia game tomorrow will be a bit determinant of what happens - also looking forward to Finland - Canada.

Sort of like the new Finnish jerseys (no homo). Selanne is 43 no? Wow still playing! Sandis Ozolinsh for Latvia too...so many older players this Olympics (also Peter Nedved, Jagr, Alfreddson and a few others) - really amazing they can still compete at this level (or at least add some leadership).

Henrik Zetterberg is out for Sweden. We were serious medal contenders but with the loss of our Captain it will be a struggle.

Well well, Finland -Norway 6-1.
Good game especially with Lehtonen as goalkeeper. I hope the rookie star Barkov didn't get injured.

However, Strap your nuts Canada!Wink

Saw the game they looked good and Selanne scored (!). Guy's 43 I think - wow just wow))

Watched the Canada game too on replay and they dominated & made it look easy. But I think Finland will be a much tougher test and I'm also looking forward to watching it. And the Swiss played Sweden pretty tough too so I think they will give the Czechs all they can handle. Sucks Zetterberg is out that does crimp Sweden's hopes a bit but they got by today at least.

US-Russia tomorrow should be great!
