I agree with almost everything that you stated in your post except raising the effective income tax on top-earners, because they already pay nearly 70 percent of the federal tax burden. The problem is not enough revenue, but far too much spending.
Well, the debate is so non-transparent, that it's important we be precise.
When I say "effective" tax, I mean "effective" tax. Not effective income tax. Not effective consumption taxes. Not effective capital taxes.
I mean effective tax on all income derived from all sources.
The effective tax, as it is today, starts out slightly progressive, then becomes regressive. For redistributional purposes, I say that's sub-optimal and given the increasing levels of stratification of our sociey, threatens the long-term cohesion of the country, which is already in serious decline.
My idea involves allowing everyone to pay the same in payroll and medicare taxes (15.3% of income), cutting marginal rates and reducing the number of brackets to just three, abolishing the corporate tax, taxing income from capital gains according to the same schedule as labor income, and eliminating deductions and credits.
A year from now you'll wish you started today

Thanks, this is all obvious to anyone that spends 5 minutes researching SS, but it's never discussed in the .1% -owned media the bleating moron hordes of anti-soshulism dimwits can't grasp it, but only follow the hilarious efforts by Wall St to get its hands on the 15% of all income streaning in from everyone, oh except dividend income over 100k lol, but I bet even congressmen understand this when they're not dazed from fucking 16 year old hookers.
Remember the Savings and Loan "crisis." Didn't think so . They fleece us suckers every 20 years, store up the wool, and that .1% laughs harder and harder as the sheep politic for THEM, and against themselves. Wait 20 years, invent a new "crisis" and repeat.
Believe me they will shore things up so people bitch pretty bad, but not TOO bad-- no one wants to jeopardize a lifestyle like they have.
