I realize he spent more than 30+ years of his life in the states but now he's residing in Europe long term. Whatever he comments about the US can only be derived from second hand knowledge at best (articles, videos, books, forum discussions). He's no longer on the ground here. Can he still have as clear a view on 'Murica as in the past?

The US social scene has not changed significantly. His lessons and advice are still applicable.

The type of advice given is somewhat timeless as well if you look at the wider lessons.

In honesty, the US hasn't really undergone massive social change for the last 20 years. Yeah, opinions have changed and people have risen and fallen. But all in all, the US hasn't changed all that much since 1990.

Back and forth while visiting other countries on different continents will indeed give you a better contextual perspective of the US.

Alternate point of view: with all the morons writing about USA culture nowadays, there really isn't anyone who isn't qualified to write about it. Heck, I've never been to USA and I still could (and) do a better job writing about it than the entire Jezebel and Huffington Post teams combined.
