Just depends on the area you are in.
When everyone nearby knows that cops = more of a problem, they don't call.
You can probably spot these on a map if you shade by property value.

I think this may vary based on where in the US you live. I live in a pretty good part of town, so the cops in my district don't see much real action (mostly property crimes, even 1 murder in a year is an anomaly), so they are happy to get some "work" to keep them busy.

Last year, there was a rash of cars being broken into at night. Well, even "broken into" is a stretch, as most people in my neighborhood just leave their car doors unlocked like idiots.. but anyway, the cops actually set up a stakeout one night and did catch the criminals. Think of that -- a stakeout all over a few stolen GPSes and sunglasses.

Ya, it just totally sucks when the police do their job.

I jsut recently got the shit beat out of me by 4 dude out here in Spain. They got my wallet and I got the shit kicked out of my head by 2 or 3 of them or by 1 or 2 of them a couple of times. by then I couldn't tell. I fought back as best I could but I was a little drunk and there really isn't any reall good way to fight 4 guys no matter what hollywood would have you believe but I tried. Anyway once I came too I went back to the club I was at previously, still bleading from my head, I told a cop who seemed largly uninterested in my perdicament. In the rest of the world a man is expected to take care of himself. That's why I even tried to fight back in the face of such obviously terrible odds. somewhere in my heart I knew no one would give a fuck, I'm going to get robbed if I don't try to kill off one or two of these guys, and I was bigger than any one of the guys who was attacking me. I think the US used to be like this from stories my folks and grandfolks have told me. strange as it sounds I prefer it the way it used to be.

Put it this way, would you rather stand naked for 6 hours in zero degree celsius weather or 22 degree celsius weather? The one is substantially warmer than the other, I'm sure you'd agree, despite only a 22 degree difference.

Put it another way - the boiling point for water is 100 degrees, which of the 2 values is closer to boiling point?

22 degrees is a massive increase in heat energy. Of course both will burn, but a cup of spilt coffee at 65 degrees will usually cause a scald, although I have seen second degree burns from that. But these are partial thickness burns and usually not difficult to treat. 3rd degree burns (i.e. the entire skin is burnt off down to fat/muscle) are much more difficult to sort out and if you get them on your hands are potentially disabling injuries.

Of course, if I dipped someone in a boiling pot of 65 degree water, I'm sure they would get badly burned. I'm not saying it's not dangerous, but I've yet to see a third degree burn from spilt coffee (I've seen second degree burns). But I can understand how increasing the temperature to 87 degrees can drastically increase the injury potential.

Part of it is people can't resolve their differences by agreeing to terms. An example is when dueling was allowed under the code duello, depending on the circumstances and offense challanges would be issued and settled. In fact there were even cases where a man was legally penalized for not answering a challange. But for that system to work men had to agree to settle things for good and hold to honor. We lost honor.

I actually noticed this too after having lived in the States for a while. People are waaaaay too quick to call the cops on any little non-issue. Suburban baby boomers do it all the time where I live lol.

Kids having a party next door? Call the cops.

Got into an argument with a cashier at Target? Call the cops.

Neighbor's dog took a dump on your lawn? Call the cops.

I swear, it's nuts!!

This is part of the normal swing of the pendulum in society. People get angry and spoiled...then start a war and blow of steam by killing each other. The war's survivors calm the fuck down because they've been through hell and don't want more. But their kids and grandkids get more and more angry and spoiled till they eventually start a war. The human race has been having wars every 70 years or so, for all of history.

The problem now is, we can't have real wars because of nukes. So we're having a Cold Civil War instead, where everybody is attacking each other with the police and lawsuits, and terrorism and shootings. The next 20 years will get progressively worse.

Am I a pussy because I really don't want to live in a community where I have to worry about 4 guys jumping me and repeatedly kicking me in the head?
I'd rather have an activate police force that sometimes gets called out to deal with trivial bullshit that people should really be able to work out among themselves then live in a place where I can get potentially life-threatening injuries and the cops won't care.
