Went out, wish I wouldn't have, though I did have fun with friends.

Got drunk, terrible hangover Jan 1, because no food before drinking and no water bc drinks were so hard to come by.

Sounds like I didn't miss out on much.

Also, the students are on winter break and have probably gone home.

Even without the students usually there is a throng of people clogging up the streets across the commons and the major bridges. People were barely out to see the ice sculptures.

I can't wait to see the GDP numbers for this quarter, either American culture is changing fast (no one likes to go out anymore) or people are broke. Those are my only two explanations.

That's why I think it's important to get a good group together for things like NYE. I don't think I would ever go out solo or without a date.

My breakdown,
Total time out: 2.5 hours (at the bar)
Total expense: $5 cover (Friends with money, sobercab)
Everyone got laid
Terrible hangover (worth it)

Being a connector pays dividends. Be the guy who plans the night and brings the group together, let rich friends cover your drinks.

You mean First Night celebrations? Got it.

I know that the American economy is changing, however Boston seems to be doing much better than the country as a whole. Forgot the official statistics, if you look at all the new buildings going up, RE sky rocketing, new restaurants opening up, things seem to be on an upswing here.

Maybe tastes are changing here? I wonder if there were a lot of protests against police brutality going on at the same time.

Overall, it does sound strange. I guess I am part of this change, except I'm stacking $$s, working on my hustles these days. I could definitely throw down the cash to go out, but after a day at work, I preferred to chill in the warm company of fine girl slaving over a stove, while I watched tv, champagne in hand.

I don't knock someone deciding to skip the holiday, but I couldn't imagine doing nothing at all myself. I stayed home, but:

Last year (I had just started dating my gf) I co-hosted a party with my buddy extremely last minute. He mostly failed getting anyone to come but due to my spamming and a couple close friends we managed to have a good ratio and probably 25-30 people in my buddy's nice beach house a short walk away. It was really memorable especially considering it was crazy last minute, we basically roped in all the stragglers/last minute no plans people. It was really unplanned and we just threw alcohol and people together and it worked out well.

This year I decided I was going to have a New Year's Eve Party at my small beach house and that I was going to do it in style. I spent a couple hundred dollars in alcohol/mixers re-stocking my bar and a few hours getting the place ready. My girl came over and with the help of another girl decorated the whole place really nicely (talking store bought + custom made decorations). Other friends sourced and donated badass glassware for the midnight toast. I invited a lot more people and with significantly more notice than last year and only had maybe 30-35 RSVPs so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I asked people to bring champagne or beer if they'd drink it and an appetizer if they wanted. If they wanted any specialty liquor/mixers to bring that too. I also had a simple theme that allowed for some creativity without it being too difficult/expensive.

The results were excellent overall, my high points:

* Very solid ratio (even though I have a gf, nobody likes sausage-fests)
* Best turnout of any party to date. My place is NOT big, yet I did a head count before we peaked and it was well into the mid 50s. We probably peaked at 60 or more and total headcount with people who came through then had other parties or who went out to our local nightlife for the ball drop must've been in the 70s/80s.
* A surprisingly on point theme response, amazing creativity and people looked phenomenal.
* Great music (mostly my good friend and his girl DJ'ed on my powerful home theater setup).
* Great guests overall. All the friends of friends were cool/respectful. The only problems were usual issues for parties that size (spills, minor breakage, etc...).
* My bar got hit hard but it also got refilled almost equally (maybe more so...haven't done a bottle count) by people bringing alcohol. Friends jumped in and played bartender throughout the party so I didn't really have to do shit.
* My beer fridge started out almost completely empty and is now fully stocked.
* Since most of the things were taken care of I got to hang with a lot of people and spend plenty of time dancing/grab-assing/kissing my girl.
* The cops never showed up to my party despite me shutting it down past 2 AM. This is with music playing nearly at club-level volumes. Awesome.

Low points:
* There was some various drama at the very end of the night, but fortunately I was able to address it, people got over it, or those people left.
* Some people never showed that were supposed to bring even more girls, but it would've just been good to see them, no big deal. We probably didn't have room for them anyway.
* My place was pretty trashed, but my friend's helped do basic clean up at the end and the next day other friends helped clean up a lot of the rest. Nothing major damaged, just dirty/messy and a lot of trash and a little glass to clean up.

Then the following day (in the afternoon) I went diving with my buddy and watched the first sunset of the year while exiting the water and climbing up to the cliff overlooking the ocean. Then we ate a mexican food feast while defrosting and passed out while watching the Rose Bowl. Pretty nice start to the year.

The new year will also be one of less distractions and bullshit. I've been busy figuring out whom among my friends and acquaintances contributes to my life, and whom detracts. Those on the downside of the equation won't be hearing from me much longer. I'm closer to 30 than I am 20, so it's time to get my lifestyle in check.

Here we are a year and a week later and I did exactly what I said I was going to do. Cut a few losers out of my life and I made more money last year than I ever have before. Moved into nicer digs too. One thing I did allow myself to splurge on last year was furnishings - bought new bedroom and kitchen furniture, a new TV, some nice art for the walls, etc. It's very satisfying coming home.
