Embracing our creativity and artistic ability
Being a well-rounded man, with lots of interesting experiences and hobbies as well as a great deal of knowledge on a myriad of subjects, is not only something that is admirable, but the process of becoming that person is fulfilling in and of itself.

As of now I have a blog in the works, as well as an ebook I'm writing. Along with writing in a journal I find myself writing at length nearly everyday. In addition to this I read for an hour or so a day, play chess every day, and practice Russian frequently. I really enjoy these things for what they are, and also find that they will prove beneficial down the road.

While those things embrace creativity and being artistic to an extent, I can't help but think that there is a big chunk missing here. I'm thinking something along the lines of playing a musical instrument, writing poetry, or painting/drawing. While those things may not seem 'alpha', they're things I nonetheless would like to pursue, and think those types of activities are important (time permitting of course).

Does anyone else feel this way? And do any of you all have hobbies like this? If so what are they and how should one go about getting started?

RE: Embracing our creativity and artistic ability
You're basically talking about being a Renaissance Man. I agree that being well-rounded and knowledgeable is something every man should strive for. IMO, you should always fill these categories:

Physical- Weightlifting, sports, martial arts, etc.

Mental- Analytical writing, reading, chess, language, etc.

Emotional- Creative writing, acting, painting, meditation, etc.

If you combine all three, you get the spirit. When all are in balance then you're spirit is healthy.

When Thomas Jefferson was in college, he used to row in a canoe and run. He also read a lot, debated, played the violin & piano, wrote poetry, wrote essays, etc. Is it a wonder why this guy was so successful?

Arnold Schwarzenegger went to art museums, antique shows, read a variety of books from fiction to history, acted and lifted weights. Again, is it a wonder why he was so successful?

I think you're focusing too much on the mental and neglecting the emotional.

If you want to play an instrument, find one that interests you and take some lessons.

If you want to write poetry, I recommend reading Paul Fussell's Poetic Meter and Poetic Form. An old book that breaks down poetry from every age. You learn about the structure and rhythm as well as other things while reading the classics. Once you have an understanding of this, write your own. My poetry is decent. I started off with haikus and worked my way up. One of my future goals is to write an epic like The Odyssey.

Painting and drawing I cannot help you there. Most people are self-taught and many tell me they started by tracing things.

Also, are you working out regularly? You don't need to become a bodybuilder, pro fighter or compete in sports. Just do some calisthenics and run uphill/swim.

RE: Embracing our creativity and artistic ability
That was a well thought out post, I appreciate it!

I agree with you though that I am lacking in the 'emotional' category. I meditate daily, but I don't think that is enough on it's own. As for the physical aspect, I do some sort of physical activity at least 6 days a week.

Also, are the three categories you listed something that you came up with on your own or is it something that is widely accepted?

My old martial arts mentor taught me about the spirit. He may have come up with it or gotten it from Eastern philosophy, I'm not sure. I was planning to do an in-depth piece on this topic. When I get around to it, I'll PM you.
