RE: Low-Carb Lifestyle
It's been about a week since the "induction phase" of my atkins diet finished, and aside from a few days where there was a bit of binge drinking (including just a little beer, but some sugary cocktails as well) and some binge eating (late night burrito runs) my diet is basically still pretty high protein, low carb. I do eat quite a bit more vegetables now, but protein is still a big part of the diet. I've definitely bumped myself out of ketosis though.

I don't really have a scale here right now to check my weight, but looking at my stomach now and seeing less fat, I can say the diet for the most part has worked.

I definitely see myself transitioning to a more veggie based diet soon. Although, I think the key is everything in moderation at this point.

Since starting the diet my stomach has shrank, mainly because when your diet consists of protein, protein, and more protein, like in Atkins, your taste for food changes. When the only options you have are chicken, beef, fish, or tofu (etc), you slowly lose interest in munching on bad foods.

I'm not going to lie, my weight gain was caused by terrible eating decisions. Before this point I thought since I ran twice a week for a couple of miles, that I could eat whatever junk food I wanted. I was still under the mentality I had back when I was way more active. This diet has helped me get past that binge eating mindset and on the road to more moderation (and awareness of what I eat).

All in all, good stuff! Wink

If you can go about 10 days without drinking at all you will be amazed at how good you feel.

I tried going sober when i came back from my South America trip, and while I felt pretty damn good, it's hard to be social in the US when you're the only sober guy in the room. It's much easier being sober, or at least greatly limiting your drinks, in other countries that don't have as big of a drinking culture. In the US you really make a sacrifice when you don't drink.

Anything without casein protein is great. Protein supplements are actually bullshit unless you're doing lot's of lifting (4+ days/week). Most people (including most athletes) get plenty of protein from a diverse plant-cenetered diet. One way to tell if you're getting more protein then your body can utilize is if your piss is foamy. Foamy piss=too much protein in your diet!

It's got Casein protein. I'd avoid that stuff.

I could forward a rediculous amount of links.

The ones that are for it are all vegans and vegetarians.

I'm interested in any link you can provide hosted by a respected nutritional or sports performance research institution. Couldn't find any myself.

Really? By who? The Weston A Price Foundation? Give me a break, those guys are a joke.

Numerous medical studies have linked IGF-1 to cancer, specifically Prostate Cancer. If you want to risk your life, go ahead. But, all indications are that high amounts of dairy consumption increase the likelihood of both prostate cancer. The most recent findings are result of the very large study done in Europe called EPIC.

Quote:EPIC is a multicentre prospective study carried out in 23 centres in 10 European countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, including 519,978 participants (366,521 women and 153,457 men), most aged 35–70years.

Quote:High intake of dairy protein and calcium from dairy products and high serum concentration of IGF-I were associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Oh and one more think keep in mind that the EPIC study was conducted in Europe where the artificial growth hormones rBGH is banned, unlike in the USA. So, if anything consuming high amounts of dairy protein originating in the USA might put consumers at even higher risk than this study indicates.

I try to eat clean man but its hard. I also love beer and women too much to ever be fully ripped. I do need to get back to Veggies, Chicken and nuts that was pretty goot for me while it lasted.

What does the love of women have to do with not being able to get ripped? I can understand beer, it gives you a gut but jooking women actually gets you in great shape.

Pussy is very high in carbs.

Most of the anti-low-carb bullshit is thoroughly debunked in the OP. (With lots of sources).

I will only seriously consider the opinions of reputable sources. This does not count. Nutritional misinformation is endemic. This is why I will ONLY listen to the opinions of respected nutritional research groups aligned with major research institutions. Period.

RE: Low-Carb Lifestyle
Pretty much every professional body builder uses a low-carb diet of one form or another when attempting to cut as much FAT and conserving as much muscle possible in preparation for competition.
Also the after just 1 week of dieting the extreme weight loss your seeing is probably more water than fat. It is likely that your body had a large excess storage of sodium and therefor water weight which has been excreted now that you are eating clean.
But yeah after a month the weight should be falling off, and 2-3 cheat days a month are usually beneficial I wouldn't worry about that.
