I read the same judge gave ten years to a young black guy who got in a fistfight and the other guy hit his head on the ground and died.

I saw this shit lots of times in the courts, relatively rich white kids getting big breaks. A couple of them were my clients. It was shocking how quickly the prosecutors would roll over for a rich kid in a selective college, where for a poor guy they'd be asking for time.

I don't know if I posted this before, but years ago a friend of mine, a white guy, killed someone in an alcohol-related traffic accident and got something like one month work-release and five months home detention. He got put on the maximum amount of probation, however, with every type of condition you could imagine.

Good for the kid. Why is everyone hating on him? And if someone here were in the same situation this kid was and made the same mistake, wouldn't they be thanking God they got this deal?

Don't tell me anyone of you would turn down this deal. It doesn't even have to be this crime particularly, don't tell me if you had the money and you got arrested for a fairly serious crime that you would turn down a good deal out of some obligation to the bullshit notion of equality under the law.

I feel all the whining around here on this issue is very Beta. Don't hate the player here guys.

There are people who spend 6 months in jail for smaller shit and this guy commits multiple vehicular manslaughters without any punishment....the next time he gets caught it's because he killed 5-10 people thinking it was okay because he can pay it off.

Yea, I would probably hate him, but I don't think I would feel any better having some 16 year old put into adult lock-up for 10 years. I would be more pissed at his parents to be honest. He is a minor after all. I am not an expert on juvenile crime or the punishments, but it seems like putting a minor in jail for that long of a time would be harsh. Realistically, he probably just avoided juvenile jail until he was 18.

But it isn't like he is getting off. He is being confined to some rehab facility for an undetermined amount of time and probably house arrest or some very serious form of probation after that. His life will be utter shit if that is what you are looking for. He won't be able to drive, drink, do drugs(due to drug tests), travel, get a decent job(unless his parents will hook him up), and will have to adhere to a strict curfew among other things. Now, he won't be getting raped in jail, but if that is what you are looking for, that is just vengeance that won't bring your loved one's back.

I think strict probation and financial compensation to the affected families(I bet there will be a civil case out of this as well) will be more than appropriate here.

As for living next to him, he wouldn't really bother me. He doesn't seem like a hardcore criminal or drug addict, just a kid that made a very serious mistake. But I still think he can reform and turn his life around.

No way this guy will live a normal life. His life is over. He's done. He will probably wish he had been sent to prison, because at least prison ends. At least there is an element of possible redemption to a prison term.

So, Ethan Couch decided to flee to Mexico with his mother after skipping a meeting with his probation officer. He dyed his hair, and got caught in Puerto Vallarta by Mexican authorities.

Apparently, the kid threw a going away party before he and his mother fled.

The legal system is beyond messed up if an underage kid got off on probation after he decided to drive drunk and end up killing four people. Hopefully, this time, the legal system will not fail and he will this time suffer from the consequences of his actions. I'm sure Tyrone and Jesus will be able to set him straight once he gets thrown in prison.

You would be amazed at what teens get away with in this country. I worked Psych for a year after graduation. The number of kids who had committed felonies and never saw a day in jail was eye-opening. If you are a teen, you have the green light to do what you want. Most judges dont want to put a kid in jail. Get a nice social worker or therapist to write the judge for you, and you wont see a jail cell no matter what you have done. It was one of the reasons I had to switch jobs. I couldnt stand working with child molesters and even murderers and watch them get to go home after a couple weeks in ``therapy.''

Terrible. Heck, their conscience brains are not fully developed yet and if they drive these heavy V8 trucks, dangerous things happen. More than a couple years (2) jail is what I would consider draconian. Maybe just a couple of months.

But the 'affluenza' things sounds scary, it is a word that makes the money class more 'guilty', as if having money is a disease, and this, gentlemen, is a dangerous way of thinking.

Nobody should go to jail for "killing," only for "murder" and "negligent homicide." The word "killing" should really be reserved for self defense, war, and execution of criminals.
