Seemed pretty safe when I was there in 2008.. Wow I cant believe it has been that long. Damn, was it easy back then.

You should visit again. Its even better now, especially in terms of nightlife. Somewhat around 2009-2010 many night venues started opening, especially in old town and now its booming compared to lets say 5-6 years ago.
If you considering a visit its definitely worth a trip to have some fun.

What's with the fearmongering?

I walked down that street many times alone at night, and didn't even get a weird stare.

No more dangerous than any other EE city.

That fear mongering is just a stereotype, and pretty old one, now its almost laughing stock, its like you stuck in year 1995.
Actually Kaunas is the safest city (can link to statistics) out of the 5 biggest Lithuania's cities.

You probably heard about "2nd city syndrome". Its somewhat popular (mostly from capital people) to talk down on Kaunas (so that they feel superior). Or another thing like NY (or even US) people talk down with jokes and stereotypes on NJ, hehe Smile
So you may hear stereotype here and there, just take them with huge grain of salt and enjoy your stay Smile

When in Kaunas two best places to live are either old town or "Laisves aleja/avenue", or nearby it by walking distance.
Laisves avenue is the main pedestrian street, about 2km long. Then you have old town next to it. Most of the action are there. You can reach everything by walking if you live there.

I have seen some pretty violent street fights both in Klaipeda and Kaunas 2 times, outside of clubs, during my 1 month stay there

Can you elaborate?
What are you actually seeing?

RE: Kaunas, Lithuania
Stayed there last year around this time for 6 weeks, but got only one bang. Girls dont drink so much here as in Latvia and Estonia. Quality is high though. Im white and from Germany, so I have not had any racism. But there was another issue: NATO base close by. So there were like soldiers invading the old town on weekends. They dont get creative, so the mostly stick to the places in the old town. The after hour bar can be jammed packed by them around 5.
