Right now the only thing I can remember about my family being together is me getting the shit kicked out of me by my father while my mother, sister, and brother sat in the kitchen waiting for it to be over.

This was my experience too. Sometimes you could reverse the order with my brother absorbing it and me in the kitchen. etc. etc.
