No trouble,yet. Political protests against an amnesty bill which would let Thaksin come back. Non violent so far. I haven't even given it a second thought.

Yes just a protest, probably avoid democracy monument area and its fine. Though last time I walked there without knowing a protest was on and managed to score free food.

The Red Shirts like the Democracy Monument, the Yellow Shirts seem to like Lumpini Park and Sukumvit.

Was on Skype with a Thai woman who works for the government in Bangkok today, she's a little worried.

I was there during the last coup when there where shots being fired, tanks on the streets, and shutting down the airport. In all honesty if you want to be super safe you just avoid the areas that protest happen and you would never even know anything was going on.

I went to the protest all the time to check it out. I was more likely to get hurt taking the motorbike taxi to the protest than I was when I got there. The news hypes shit up and makes it seem scary. Don't believe it. Don't be a pussy.

Hasn't gotten violent yet, but it seems like the pressure is intensifying on the Shinawatra regime now, the hand was tipped by a generous amnesty bill to allow her brother to return.

I just came back from Bangkok yesterday. Shit got violent there saturday with a few deaths in a protest. Up until Friday it was peaceful and I only witnessed people with whistles being loud and annoying.

Went to my first yellow shirts (anti-government) protest last weekend:



Didn't feel too unsafe:



I didn't see many farangs, apart from long term resident expats and the odd blogger.

The problem with demonstrations like this is that the police were nowhere to be seen. If trouble should arise, you're on your own .

But Bangkok is a VAST city and the demonstrations are mostly in the old part of the city. The suburbs are scene to the more dangerous incidents. I live quite near to Ramkhanhaeng where those people got killed the other day. Really there's no reason for a tourist to go there.

Now the government has moved the immigration office to the same building as the red's HQ. Now that's an intimidating place to visit ! But it's really about the only place in Bangkok that the yellow shirts won't go anywhere near!
