Fantasie Impromptu Chopin. There are other pieces as well, including the military polonaise which posted earlier. Not pc humor either.





Probably Lizst most famous piece. Hungarian Rhapsody #2 This might not be the best played version (a bit fast and some flubs) but its very well filmed so you can see how chaotic it is to play.






Cat concerto. The very famous Tom and Jerry version. I think its inspired by Victor Borge a comic pianist who did crazy things while still playing the song. Video I guess is letterboxed because it was filmed in low resolution. I don't know where you would get an hd version that is complete, I tried looking for it but no luck.

Anything by Chopin. period. I know he belongs to the romantic period.

Anyways, my favourite groups of music are the Baroque, Classical and the Romantic era music. Followed by Jazz. Speaking of which, does anybody want to start a Jazz thread?

i am surprised that the dude3737 didnt mention Philip Glass.(i thought you really like him...well, Glass is not classical in the true sense.) i know you are nuts about Bach, though. well, bach belongs to the baroque period, so, i guess he is not classical either.

another thing i was expecting to see here--as a crowd favourite-- is Clint Mansell's Lux Aetena which was used a soundtrack for "requiem for a dream".

I discovered Barroque is excellent to get some work or reading done. Somehow the rhythms keep you focused, but don't ask me why. It just works for me. try it out.

I don't think this will get a lot of popular support here, but lately I've been obsessed with the sacred works of Palestrina, a 16th century choral composer.

Even as an atheist, I find his work, and the work of his contemporaries, to be deeply moving and full of humanist spirit.

Upon entering a cathedral, smelling the incense, watching the flickering of the candles, and listening to this divinely man-made music, how could one not be a true believer?

Kazuhito Yamashita's transcription of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. He catches a lot of flak in some corners of the classical guitar world (mostly English speaking) for unorthodox technique and avant-garde transcriptions of classical piano pieces for guitar. The Spanish, however, love him.





This is only one passage, the entire arrangement is a bit over 20 minutes long.

I really like Mahler's second symphony; it is hugely dramatic and has one of the most powerful climaxes in all of music.
The live performance I attended (with the same choir as in the video) sent shivers down my spine as no other piece has ever done.





You can skip to the last 10 minutes if you only want the climax.

Surprised Rach 2 hasn't been mentioned yet. So here it is:





The third movement is easily the most inspiring of the three and satisfyingly so, after the dark and brooding first movement and the melancholy second.

I played Ravel's Piano Concerto in G with an orchestra as the soloist, so that one is near and dear to my heart:





The Piano Concerto in G was inspired by American Jazz and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in particular.

More Ravel, from his difficult suite Gaspard de la nuit which I've seen translated as "Artful Dodger of the Night." This is Ondine, which was based upon a fanciful poem of a water nymph seductress:





Finally I like Lyapunov, an intellectual heir of Franz Liszt. He wrote music in the style of Romanticism, as opposed to other famous Russian composers of the time (Prokofiev, for example).

You can tell Lyapunov listened to a lot of Liszt when you take a gander at Lyapunov's Transcendental Etude No. 6 "Storm":

I'm a big fan of Tchaikovsky, one of his most famous song is Marche Slav (Slavonic March). He wrote this song to support the Serbians during their war against the Ottoman Empire.

Handel - Sarabande or any of the waltzes... beautiful to listen to.

Despite the fact it was only on for a single season 'Kings' had some great classical music pieces.

Barber of Seville is good. Also on the blue Danube by Strauss. Vivaldi and Mozart are good too. Bizet, Stravinsky and Debussy are nice too.
