I just finished three books, one of which was The Way Of Men. Highly recommend that book, and plan on re-reading it after these two books. Also have Quintus Curtius's book On Duties on the way, and that will be the third.

Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson.

Isaacson is a phenomenal writer, he really makes his books come to live. I've read his other biography about Benjamin Franklin, it was also great.

Is there any reason that we have two book threads? What are you reading and what book have you just finished. Surely it would make more sense just to merge the two and have one big book thread.

I digress.

Currently reading;

The Nazi Hunters by Damien Lewis. Great true story about the SAS in the voeges region between France and Germany in 1944. First the sabotage efforts on the Germans there and now about to move to the hunting down of nazis after the war. Great writing.


Just finished, Always Running by Luis J Rodriguez. Semi interesting book about a Mexican dude growing up and being in gangs in LA in the 60s and 70s. A bit preachy and the guy could have chanelled his angry into doing some fucking work instead of killing people.

What was nice though was that it was an actual book. I read mostly on kindle so it was good to feel an actual paper book again.

Lastly, No Picnic on mount Kenya by felice benuzzi. True story of some Italian POWs who escaped from a camp in Kenya and went to climb a mountain and came back again. Really well written and captures the spirit of the times and the sport of doing something just for the hell of it. Amazing achievement considering their condition and means.

I am currently reading How to win friends and influence people.

I started it 2 days ago and I got sucked in, 30% so far. I can't put it down, the advice in this book is gold. Thank you Mr. Carnegie, I don't know why I waited so long to read it fuck!

A colleague recommended it to me 2 years ago but I ignored him. I asked my friends during one of our simpin' session about it and one of them told me and I quote "This is the reason why people are so fake".

Hero of The Empire by Candice Millard. Exceptional narrative biography, about the early years of Winston Churchill. He chased wars, fighting in numerous ones throughout his early 20's and purposefully acted in crazy/brave ways because he wanted to become a war hero. It was part of his plan to become Prime Minister, which he felt destined for even at 25. Highly recommended.

I love that book. There is a general academic backlash against men like Carnegie, and I believe that much of it has to do with his love for the United States as well as his encouragement of personal greatness (as opposed to victocratic weakness).

You can almost tell if a book is great by how the "elites" receive it. If they dislike it, then that alone might be a reason to read it.

It delves into the underworld of money laundering and the covert financial world of global intelligence agencies, crime syndicates and the like.

I've always been fascinated with the seedy underbelly of society and this is one of the machinations that made things (and still make things) tick.
