Plan on renting a motorbike and just going exploring most days.

Check out Mactan Island for a day, its where the airport is but not really where you'd want to stay, unless you have a Cebuana girl lined up already. Another spot worth seeing is Tops lookout at night, other than that I can't think of much to see there. Of course try the delicious local lechon and you'll probably end up at Mango square at some point, my favourite club there was called Alcohology. Have fun.

Do tell us how the Cebu area is like and how much it was effected by the typhoon. I'm planning to go there in later december. It put a bit of a wrench in my plans.

I just did a journey of over 200km around the north half of Cebu today. No signs of any problems from the Typhoon. Life is moving as usual. Nothing to worry about.

There is no indication that a storm ever came through. Everything in the city is functioning normal. No changes on prices or availability. Zero problems from the typhoon here.

I am staying at the Tune Hotel a 2 minute walk from Ayala mall only $35 a night. Highly recommend it. Small clean rooms, great location.

Does having a kitchen matter?

I mean..anywhere else I'd like to cook my food to have a balanced diet. Maybe in Manila/Cebu the food quality is sub par making a kitchen useless?

I ate out mostly in the Philippines, local food isn't great but they have plenty of cheap international options in the food courts of the malls, where you'll be hanging out a lot anyway. While at the beach in places such as Boracay, Dumaguete and Palawan I ate a lot of seafood and it was great. If you do want to cook in your apartment, the malls also have decent grocery stores but imported food can be pricey. Like most tropical places, chicken, pork and fish are cheap but beef isn't.

I booked on agoda.com the night before I came to Cebu. Once you add all the taxes it is probably closer to $43 a night.

I am here for 4 days. I just booked all my days. If I was staying 15+ days I would probably have a different strategy.

Tune Hotel has had a solid internet connection the whole time which is a huge deal for me.

If you are staying in one place for more than a few weeks then Yes I think a kitchen matters. Eating out everyday for every meal is such a hassle and never healthy.

You can find decent quality food at any of the supermarkets located at the high end malls. Prices are fine unless you want imported products. Imports from the USA seem to not be taxed as high as other products. In Thailand it was the opposite where USA items were taxed very high. At least that is my observation, I haven't been reading the trade agreements between countries.

DD, is beef expensive in the Phils? Do they have good quality local beef, or would I have to go for imported?

Thai beef is shit and US imported beef is mad expensive.

I did find a Muslim lady at the OnNut day market who sells Thai beef very cheap, but it's not very good. Can get a kilo of New Yorks for ~270 baht, but they are pretty damn tough and not very flavorful. More similar to grilling up some rump roast back home than actual New Yorks. She occasionally has rib-eyes as well, they are better than the New Yorks, but still not very good.

I think it's probably somewhat common in the expat crowd because a lot of dudes who move to SEA are sexual deviants (yes, talkin about you fuckers in this thread lol). I'd imagine the dirtier guys who move there end up hooking up with dirtier girls, who are probably down for that.

I wouldn't imagine it is a standard cultural thing between normal Flip couples, but I could be wrong.

Local beef is shit. Almost all quality beef is imported from the USA here in the Philippines. In Bangkok I was shopping at Villa Market on Thonglor soi 15 (J. Ave) and most of the beef was from Australia.

Beef prices seem reasonable. Maybe a 25% mark up from what I would pay in the USA. Not so bad considering it had to cross the Pacific ocean.

There is obviously a sweet trade deal between the US and the Philippines. There are lots of products you can get here at reasonable prices that are imports from the US.

IHOP has good breakfast of course. It is walking distance from my condo so I have been several times. It is open 24 hours on friday and saturday night.

The Bacon here is generally better than BKK. Don't buy the local version at the grocery store though, that is shit. Gotta pay the extra and get the imported bacon.

I thought that they had pork everywhere in the Phils, or is that just in Cebu.... anyhow, I would have thought, based on these kinds of reports, that there would be a variety of pork product selections throughout the Phils... which in my mind would have included bacon.. but bacon may be something that they just don't do, locally?

Recently, in about the past nine months or so, I have increased my consumption of bacon.. Probably I eat, on average, a couple of pounds of it a week... and then I save the grease in order to add that to my other foods, including soups, vegetables, etc... call me strange, but I wanna make sure that i get sufficient quantities of animal fats in my diet on a regular basis.

I mean frequently guys are hating on the Phils for the food, and I thought that generally part of those kinds of hate claims was that guys were saying that there was NOT enough selection of food and too much pork... but NO mention of bacon.

Anyhow, thoughts on pork selection in Manila and/or other parts of the Phils, DD or anybody else?
