I don't even know what to say about this article. I just thought it was interesting and goes to show that anything is possible.

A black Nigerian couple gave birth to a blue-eyed, blond-haired white baby in London

Blue-eyed blonde Nmachi, whose name means “Beauty of God” in the Nigerian couple’s homeland, has baffled genetics experts because neither Ben nor wife Angela have any mixed-race family history. Pale genes skipping generations before cropping up again could have explained the baby’s appearance.

Ben also stressed: “My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn’t been, the baby still wouldn’t look like that. “We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages – not saying anything.” Doctors at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup – where Angela, from nearby Woolwich, gave birth – have told the parents Nmachi is definitely no albino.

Ben, who came to Britain with his wife five years ago and works for South Eastern Trains, said: “She doesn’t look like an albino child anyway – not like the ones I’ve seen back in Nigeria or in books. She just looks like a healthy white baby.” “But we don’t know of any white ancestry. We wondered if it was a genetic twist. “But even then, what is with the long curly blonde hair?” Professor Bryan Sykes, head of Human Genetics at Oxford University and Britain’s leading expert, yesterday called the birth “extraordinary”. He said: “In mixed race humans, the lighter variant of skin tone may come out in a child – and this can sometimes be startlingly different to the skin of the parents.

“This might be the case where there is a lot of genetic mixing, as in Afro-Caribbean populations. But in Nigeria there is little mixing.” Prof Sykes said BOTH parents would have needed “some form of white ancestry” for a pale version of their genes to be passed on. But he added: “The hair is extremely unusual. Even many blonde children don’t have blonde hair like this at birth.” The expert said some unknown mutation was the most likely explanation. He admitted: “The rules of genetics are complex and we still don’t understand what happens in many cases.”

“All that matters is that she’s healthy and that we love her. She’s a proud British Nigerian.”

My nephew was born with grey eyes and light brown hair. His Dad is Michael Jordan black and mom is a redbone creole.

Little dude is going to be pimpin when he hits high school if his eyes dont change to brown.

Infidelity wouldn't explain a dark-skinned black woman giving birth to a blond-haired, blue-eyed white baby. Under the (false) assumption that "ancestry equals phenotype", even if she had cheated with a White man, you would expect at least a brown looking child to be born.

Honestly, though, skin colour is not a reliable means of determining a person's ancestry. A person can have predominantly 'black' features but have more European ancestry than African and vice versa. Contrary to popular belief, heredity doesn't work like mixing paint or coffee and milk.

Me too. And sometimes Nigerians give birth to albinos..I saw quite a few when I was over there..so this looks like another case of albinoism. The albinos I saw looked NOTHING like their parents.

I would still call the guy on the right African American. He has a tan complexion similar to Obama. Dark skin versus tanned by the sun are very different things.

Caucasians evolved out of Africans originally. Perhaps we are now getting to see with our eyes in real time the genetic mutations that led to the white race.

I guess this means African DNA is robust enough to produce people with Nordic features. However European DNA couldn't produce black African features.

African DNA produces all the others. Therefore, totally African parents can create a white blue eyed baby - a stated another way - a baby with genetic recessive characteristics as opposed to the genetic dominant characteristics of the parents. All it takes is the expression of mutations.

This is exactly how the first "whites" came about. The first "whites" had black parents.

The child could be an albino.

Look at this Brazilian women who gave birth to albino children, for example:

Not all albinos are as pale as these Brazilian kids. Some can have more melanin, which could explain this girl.

If this Nigerian girl exhibits serious visual impairment, they'll know she's an albino.

That's a rather difficult to accept statement.

Where genetics are concerned, all bets are off.

It's got nothing to do with 'robustness,' everyone's DNA will randomly shuffle to some extent when creating offspring.

There are no black swans, until there is a black swan.

This statement only seems to make sense if one knows absolutely nothing about DNA, natural selection or human evolutionary history.

The white race has significant neanderthal DNA, the only race who has it. Perhaps this explains the siginificant variation in hair color and eye color compared to other races.

I think that is a wrong way of looking at things. The modern day blacks are not the same as the original africans. They are very evolved since then. A better idea of what the original man looked like is the Kalahari bushmen who have both black and asian features:



A bit lighter skin and you could see this face in Asia.

Whites have a significant portion of neanderthal dna because homo sapiens and homo neanderthal mated for a long time in Europe. The neanderthals are so named because they originated from a belt between modern day Scandinavia and the Alps, which was the only liveable area in that region. Because of that, it is likely they were light skinned as well.

Neanderthals only died out 30.000 years ago, which is actually very recent, close to when the earliest human modern societies originated.

Not likely. East Asians have more neanderthal DNA than whites and they only have black hair and eyes. I wouldn't say the amounts are all that significant, we're talking 1-4%.

It's called a throw back. Same sort of effect that caused harlequin babies, or babies born with tails etc.
