What does one do when working at a place with a high turnover rate?
There are some jobs that churn out people like there's no tomorrow, just eating them out raw. Sort of like raw dogging a thai prostitute in Pattaya.

I just started training on Wednesday but from the 8 people in my department:

Only 2 have been there for more than a year, one quit today
5 have been there less than 3 months, one was terminated today
1 has been there between 3-12 months.

I'm replacing one of the five (Paul) and he replaced some dude that was there for less than a year. Paul said most leave at the end of the 3 months and those who don't get promoted, but most leave.

My goal was to settle down but now the plan is to save as much as possible (not enrolling in their health insurance plan) and enroll some classes for the oil fields or enroll in a teaching program. Perhaps being optimistic will work but let's "get real"....most people are let go and 5/8 have been there for less than 3 months.

If you had 3 months to work what would you try to do?
What goals would you have?

This thread also goes out to people who work in seasonal jobs such as in the oil field or selling xmas trees. Sometimes everything is going nuts, then you're in a ghost town.

If you have an interview and get a chance to "ask any questions you have" ask these two at the very least: average worker age AND turnover rate. A high turnover rate means the place is a revolving door and there's bad management. A place with too many young people mean older workers find better opportunities.

Thanks for the correction, typo corrected. I'm updating my LinkedIn profile, trying to learn new stuff, and saving as much as possible for now.

If I fail after 3 months at least those months will count as experience on paper and start looking for another job on the 2 month mark.

Eh, I'll just say that I'm a manager of some sort....my role is to connect the company's employees with clients while keeping everyone happy and the costs low.

Yesterday I found out I replaced the who lasted 3 months, who in turn replaced another guy who was there for 3 months too. Even clients are starting to complain.

I once worked at a place with high turnover.

Everyone was always looking for their next job and talking about quitting , which was funny in a way. Usually jobs that have high turnover either really suck in some way (low pay, high stress, crazy hours, etc...) or they are designed to weed people out (like in sales).

Either way, try to make the best of the situation.

Don't get complacent!

I'm currently working at a place and when I got hired on nearly everyone was new. Through the summer 5 long term people got fired for bullshit. Lots of others quit.

1) get friendly with the people in power (not ass kissing, just show them you're a cool dude, use your social radar to figure out what kind of person they would respond to best and be that person)

2) be reliable and work hard. dont give them any reason to fire you or any reason to think you're looking for a way out

3) get your resume/cover letter game on par and plan your escape (summer was super busy and it took me until last month to finally decide when and where I was leaving to)

RE: What does one do when working at a place with a high turnover rate?
Not sure I understand the idea behind the thread.

If I knew my employment had a 3 month term, I wouldn't put it on my resume and I'd scam the place as much as possible.

But if I had an incentive to last beyond 3 months, I would try to. Meaning, I would try to shine compared to my coworkers and get in good graces with upper management. I'd play every dirty game in the book, use every tip from the 48 laws of power to completely shake things up. And then once I'm in good graces with upper management, I'd scam the place as much as possible and ride it out as long as possible. Then when I get fired once management gets wind of my activities, I'd update my Linkedin profile, doubling the amount of time that I worked at said company, and use a personal acquaintance of mine as a reference, siting his position as "departmental manager". Even if my job was to file papers, I'd put my job experience as "cost analysis, maximizing profitability and reducing cost-of-goods and increasing labor efficiency by 37%. Fluent in Compeat, Aloha, and Apogee accounting systems."

Yes it really is that easy to play the game.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

There are 15 people in my office and only one person at my position has been there longer than me and I've been here for 4 months.

At one point the only people making sales calls were me and two other new hires with combined sales experience of maybe 3 weeks. Hahaha

RE: What does one do when working at a place with a high turnover rate?
I worked for a company that had a net turnover rate of something like 20% per year. That was the 6 year average at the time. The recent year had been 12% but in the past it had been much higher. The problem was twofold:

1.) Shitty pay
2.) Weeding people out
3.) No room for advancement.

Start looking for a new place to work immediately. Unless you're doing something seasonal, odds are, you're working for a shitty employer, and you shouldn't have any reason think your experience will be much different.

I worked for a place like this. Was a call center. I was taking long ass breaks for like 45 minutes instead of 15. I thought I'd get fired in a week or two and get unenplyment insurance so I can go travel. Then after a month, they still didn't fire me dispite I was doing very little. Oh and they promoted me after so I was stuck there for another month. Then I just stopped showing up and called in sick all the time..lol. They finally fired me and I went traveling...lol
