I had trouble with this for a while, but I think I've finally come across a reliable measure.

• No matter what angle you view her picture from, she never looks like she's staring directly at you. Other guys here describe this as "looking past you".
• No glow/an emptiness in the eyes. A sign of a damaged soul.

As for the original question, a lot of what others have said above:

1. Dead eyes. They appear to look through you not at you, into some kind of void. The stare of a broken heart and soul. Girls who are happy and have had the sense or luck to maintain themselves within a reasonable 1-3 men range and not get their "heart broken" are still able to look into your eyes, and their eyes sparkle before their lover. The whole "anime eyes" expression isn't totally stupid.

I would say that's the main thing to look for. Usually for me there is some evidence elsewhere as well that rings an alarm such as a tattoo (however small), piercing, smoking, drinking, drug use, various interests, behaviors and tics. There is an entire palette of types of evidence that you can make your conclusions from, which will increase your success rate at identifying them.

But there is a small % of girls you would never expect it from, at least until you got to know them on a deeper level. Even then, out of these, a smaller % of girls would still keep it well hidden. Shy religious girls can be the biggest freaks you will ever come across. That's just one group. Others are just completely out of leftfield.
