Always has been and always will be the 'number sign' to me. Somehow it got corrupted to 'hashtag,' because I guess saying 'number sign' wasn't trendy enough for hipsters and SWPLs to use on twitter and facebook.

It's called a hashtag. People put it in front of a word on social media sites, so that others can search for that word or topic and see what people are saying about it.

It used to piss me off too el mech, until I realized a good use for hashtags: Whenever I'm in a new city, I use instagram to search #ABCbar or #XYZclub and then see if any hot girls frequent those places. It's a good way to see, in almost real time, what's going on at these places and if they are worth a visit.

On Twitter I kind of understand the purpose of hashtags. Less so on Facebook. I've seen FB posts like "nothing like #WarmPancakes on a Sunday morning." Do they really think anyone out there gives enough of a shit to do a search for that?

In Croatian, we call that sign "ljestve" (literally: "a ladder"). Until quite recently, its main use was in telephone centrals, now its main use is attention whoring.

On certain sites where they are actually functional they do have a use. The also can have a purpose like the dude said a few post above to see where the hot chicks hang out.

It has its uses. I run the social media for a local non-profit, and the only way we get ANY attention on Twitter is if we use the appropriate #tags for our posts so that people with an interest in that subject can find it when they search for #theirinterest.

Its also useful for business purposes of building a brand. If you have unique # you can search yourself and see what kind of social media track you have going and what people are saying about your brand/product
