You absolutely need a car to take advantage of the best spots.

My favourite wave closest to the center of town was Stone Island. You're best to stay in Olas Atlas (old town) to get access to this but yeah - you'll still need a car to get to it.

That is a right point break which wraps around the island and gets really good on south and s/w swells.

If you do stay in Olas Atlas there is a break out the front which is a swell magnet but I've never seen it get really good.

You'll get surf April/May to November....biggest is usually August/September from memory. Water temp is good...maybe 70-80 degrees throughout the season but a little bit cooler in April. Still at most you'd need a spring suit.

There is a spot called Escobars Ranch up the highway to the north of town which is amazing and never anyone there. We needed a guide to get us there and to be honest I cant help you finding it as I just dont remember.

Otherwise you have heaps of spots 1 -2 hours north....and resorts like Cardon Resort which are more or less private waves since they are so tough to get to.

Is the Olas Altas spot the best spot in town (no car required)?

How is that place situated for nightlife options?

I looked on a map, what about that little point north near Valentino's? (Update: I actually checked it on satellite view and it seemed kind of f*cked, but hell, any info on that is good).

Or the big point south near Museo Arqueológico de Mazatlán?

Looks like there could be some reef set ups along there.‎

Basically what I am getting at is where would be the place to stay with walking distance waves (quality not paramount, but decent and surfable somewhat consistently) and walking to the best nightlife to swoop girls.

It's a really tricky setup to juggle nightlife and surfing in Maz.

For nightlife you'd want to stay as close to Valentinos Castle as possible since that puts you within walking distance to most of the good spots

Olas Atlas is about a 10 minute taxi ride from this area so not ideal based on what you're after.

You do get waves out the front of Valentinos Castle on either side of the rocks but its not great. Really mushy and weak but for the first few weeks I was there I was pretty happy just to surf and stay there....and wait for the south swells to come in to head over to Stone Island or out of town.

You can get to Stone Island on a ferry or water taxi which is worth keeping in mind. I never did that but I've heard it's only about a 10 minute trip. From memory there was one that left from the old navy base which is down near Olas Atlas but I'm not 100% sure.

I'd say stay near the Castle, get a few surfs in at the main beach, then figure out a way to get out of town when you see swell hitting even if just day trips to stone island. You'll be able to hitch a ride with some of the local surfers as another option as they tend to also go out of town when the surf hits.

Re: Cardon....I was there before they renovated the place. Looks way nicer now so you'll be paying a premium for that but I think they are pretty aggressive at keeping non-paying guests out of the area so you'll get heaps of waves there. If you end up there ...you wont find anything but surf since its so isolated.

If i knew I'd be living there now. I'm yet to find a spot that ticks both boxes in Mexico.

I will go back to the states in 3 months. I will work for 3 or 4 months and half way in between working I will take a week and a half vacation. Right now I'm feeling 100% sure I will just fly to culiacan. I will write a data sheet for sure.

I too thought about LTR/marriage with a Mexicana but after spending time in Mexico over several trips most of the ones I know well end up being crazy or have issues. Wow is there girls like this in the US? I live in Nebraska and there is virtually no Hispanics here. Ive never thought Mexico will be known for girls but this got me interested. Are the girls really that light in Mexico???

No I have not been. Generally, I am not a fan of moto events or biker rallies. I mostly ride solo. Camp, backcountry, etc.

I will be in Mazatlan this upcoming February 27th up until March 4th for Semana Santa (Carnaval). If any of you are near the area let me know so we can meetup. I wanted to try out some new spots I couldn't get to last time I went like Sumbawa's or Goa's.

Is there any kind of liquor ban there during Semana Santa? I saw the video which had "Semana Santa" in the title and showed people drinking, but wasn't sure if it was actually filmed during Semana Santa. I've been hit with a liquor ban when visiting other Latin American cities during Semana Santa.

Not sure. I never been to Mazatlan on Semana Santa. I heard from a buddy of mine who was there last year that there are restrictions only in the Malecon and Zona Dorada where you cant drink publicly, but obviously you can buy alcohol anytime of the day or night. But I can't really say for sure though because this is just by word of mouth.

Semana Santa this year is in april, not march. There's never alcohol restriction, you should have a lot of fun. Long time since I went to Maza but it was always fun and cheap.

I took ETN-Turistar Lujo. It was very comfortable and only had about 18 seats in the whole bus, with wi-fi and everything. It might be a little expensive but well worth it.

Damn! you are right. I confused Semana Santa with Carnaval and just checked on Google. Carnaval is in March while Semana Santa is in April. Oh, well. I still think its worth checking out during Carnaval.

There is no way Mexican girls look like that. In my experience Mexican girls are nasty. They are nothing like the Argentinian girls back home in Buenos Aires. A 10 in Mexico is a 3 in Argentina.
