I respectfully disagree with you Speakeasy. I own a watch that is almost at the 100k mark - I wear it because I enjoy it, I know its history, know every single piece of its movement, where it was made (exact location and time), the engineers involved in its making - everything. I Never bother to mention I have it to anyone, it's for my enjoyment daily.

when told "hey, nice watch" by a girl or a friend - I just say thanks, its one of my favorites to chill with...I don't bother saying anything else.

I am truly a die-hard watch aficionado. As I can also appreciate a 300USD Nautica watch, not just high-end ones. Much like some guys pay top $$$ for a authentic cuban cigars - which can easily go for hundreds of dollars.

I would not spend more than 50 bucks on a Cigar, but some folks will spend 1,000USD on a fine, and rare Cuban Cigar.

Albeit, some watch buyers are insecure people who have to prove their value to themselves...especially the young, 20-something Rolex buyers.

I actually never saw the point in spending more than 30K on a car however, go - figure.

Oh yeah, I have an IPhone 4, I only spent 300 bucks on it =) I would never buy the Vertu phone...its a piece of shit, and can barely do half of what 300USD phones can do. I don't plan on running over my phone with my car - lol.

To me I can sort of agree with both sides of this thread. I mean I am very practical when it comes to cars and I have never bought expensive watches. Like bootylvr, I would rather spend that money traveling or enjoying something else other than something I will wear on my wrist.

However, if you have the cash to drop on a pricey watch or a brand new BMW then more power to you. The thing that get's me are the guys you meet who still live at home and drive a BMW. I knew a guy like that. Nice watch, nice car etc...but didnt even have his own place, so he was making a huge sacrifice.

If you make that much bank to drop doe on whatever you want, still travel and own your own place etc. Then more power to you.

Although this is the girl swooping section, I'm glad I saw it...

I got a bunch of watches, but I'm on boats and in the water and shit all the time. Plus in the Navy, different people used to give them to us, or we'd get major discounts, or I'd win them off other dudes playing dice or cards when we were at sea.

The best one I had though, my dad gave me when I graduated highschool. It was a Breitling Limited Edition Chronomat made in 1994, and they only made 1994 of them. I've worn the hell out of that thing over the years. I fought in 2 wars with it in, and climbed mountains, and have all kinds of stories. That watch absolutely got me laid.

The other day I jumped off a boat in to the water, and on my way back up I realized it was gone. The same damn thing happened to me with a Rolex Sea Dweller I had a few years ago, but that was from a dice game, and I really didn't care.

This one I love. I still have the box, with a gift receipt (those were rare in 1994) and there was a registration card I know I sent in.

Do you watch lovers think if I put them together a nice letter and tell them how much I loved my watch, and the good times I had with it on they'd somehow send me another one??? Do you think they'd custom make me one if I pay lots of $$$?

Or should I get back out there with the snorkel??

With all the Rolex bashing, I checked out their website and looked at some of the models, and I think Rolex is one of the most masculine watches out there. The big stigma with Rolex is that it's associated with the used car salesmen who makes his first big sale and decides to go out and buy a Rolex.

Design wise though, the Rolex has sharp clean edges, and has this bold quality to it that you won't find on that Patek Phillipe... which is probably why rich understated bankers (think GS Partners) prefer something like the Patek. Then again, if you're not one of the rich understated bankers, the Patek Phillip probably won't have the same effect, because I think the whole point behind something like the Patek Phillipe is when you're trying to subtly state "I'm rich, but confident in my wealth to the point where I don't want to show it off to the casual observer, but my rich friends definitely know that this watch is worth way more than it looks like it's worth."

But what if you can have both? A great Physique and Richard Mille RM-011? I'd say, fuck it....get both looks and bling!! The body alone won't cut it if you fuck it up when you open your mouth, or have a chiseled body, but live with your mom at the age of 30 or have a mediocre job as a car salesman or bouncer at a bar. And the watch alone won't cut it if you have a 50" (120cm) waistline, and man-boobs to go with those love-handles, and red blotches of acne on your face.

BOTTOM LINE: GET THEM BOTH!!! Like Usher for example: $100K watch, and a six pack waistline, and can dance his ass off! There's your role model.

Even guys that are die hard competition bodybuilders (I personally know over a dozen) have ZERO charisma, charm or game. So, man-up every aspect of your life, and get a Breitling (or any other watch mentioned in this thread) to go with that six pack, tapered waistline! It will look great when she is sucking on your fingers/toes too, all 21 of them!

If you cannot afford an expensive watch, allow me to recommend the Nautica or Fossil watches. They are very nice, and all under $600USD!

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET A FAKE WATCH OF ANY KIND. That just screams insecurity and self-doubt, and impacts your inner-game tremendously.

I'm one of those people who never wears a watch. If I need to tell the time I just check my celphone. Not very smooth, I know, but it does keep good time.

If I was into watches I'd definitely go for an antique watch. Ideally one with a story around it, especially stories invloving your relatives. It would be a subtle form of peacocking, though I hate that term. I have a pocket watch of my Great-Grandfather's he got when he was a RAF/RFC pilot in WW1. Have no idea whether this would help get babes in any way, but since he was known to be quite the ladies man (with several orders of magnitude more game than I have right now) I'm sure he would approve of it's use for such purposes...

This watch should cover all bases. It's real, it's understated, it looks like someone who has plenty of money without trying to show off. Personally, I don't wear metal bands anymore because of comfort/style, plus this watch goes with almost everything. It's nice all around and girls will dig the classic style with roman numerals and the skeleton face, which is interesting. Plus the name recognition is good even though most girls don't know the difference between Bulova and Bulgari (which means they will believe you when you're drunk one night and tell a girl you spend $13,000 on it). I bought mine at Belk for around $300, but I just found it online for $200.

P.S. - Get the warranty, its worth it and only like $20. Also be prepared to wear it almost daily or you will have to set the time when you put it back on. No battery, it winds itself as you walk.

I think 40% of the economy of Switzerland is tied up in the watch business. There is a columnist called the 'watch snob' thats posts all the time on the La Parvenue blog - if you read his stuff you will know where your money goes when you buy a watch. My favorite quote from the snob 'No man under the age of 25 should be seen in public with any watch that cost under $5000'

My watch is a Timex ironman purchased for 50$ at a running store. If I had the money - I would buy one of the Panerai military models. A lot of ads for high end cars and resorts with Sean Connery in the them over the past several years show him wearing a Panerai. 5000 dollars would do a lot better on a custom London suit IMO.

Also - these heavier, more expensive watches - I just don't think they look right on anyone that looks like they are under the age of 50. If your friend is hooking up with New York J.A.P.S. - their male equivalent were the only ones at the age of 20 or 21 that I have ever seen flashing 5k watches. Haven't thought of this in years - but I ducked into a French Kosher restaurant in midtown a few years ago (I didn't know it was kosher) the J boys at the table next to me all had these large gaudy watches on their 20 year old limp wrists - I never forgot that.

Personally, I'm not a guy that has ever needed to or believed in buying status symbols beyond nice masculine clothes. I'm not saying a nice watch isn't nice, but I don't see how owning a real watch vs a knock off has anything to do with your inner game. Once its on my wrist, I wouldn't think about it again until I took it off. But that's just me. My confidence isnt affected either way, especially in reference to almost 100% of women out there who can't tell a $300 watch from a $30,000 watch. Additionally, if it really is about getting laid, that same 30k would buy your way to a lot of fine ass. Probably more so than the actual watch. If your just into watches, that's another thing altogether.

I do know that anytime that I've adjusted my game to better show off position or money (real of fake) I've only attracted gold diggers that are fun to fuck, but waaayyyy more trouble than they have been worth. Those bitches tend to be better at their game than I am at detecting them. My only defense is to not show off flash or social status, unless I just want a real short term fuck buddy (nothing wrong with it). Then, as other guys have said, the shoes (and clothes) are what have always worked form me.

@Hydrogonian - True. I am just a huge watch aficionado, and LOVE fine timepieces. I never did buy them with the intent of thinking it helps get me laid. However, the few times I wear my Richard Mille a get a lot of "nice watch" compliments from both guys and girls, and even catch some girls looking at my wrist many times - not sure if that means she wants to bang me inside her head, or what goes through a woman's head when she sees a nice watch, but game is what ultimately seals the deal. Never the watch.

Mixx, you should do a write up on watches for newbies. It's something I'd like to get more knowledge on.

One thing I haven't seen touched on much in this thread is how to make a watch accommodate your overall style. We're talking about brands and price, but if your style of dressing is urban/hiphop, wearing a Brietling watch may look way out of place. And if you're a business suit kind of guy, you probably shouldn't be looking at a fossil. Or let's say you're kind of a hipster type guy, then what? I think really expensive watches are likely to only fit a certain style.

I'm very casual. I like to think I have some style. I don't wear suits or anything, I just don't go anywhere that I'd ever actually need one. So what kind of watches are best for casual types?

That's a great starter watch. Seiko has never been on my radar, but I like this one. Can definitely be useful for world poon missions.
